As the only remaining imperial garden south of the Yangtze River, Xuanwu Lake is known as the “Pearl of Jinling (present-day Nanjing).” It is the best spot in Nanjing’s urban area to watch the sunset blending into the city skyline. Boating on Xuanwu Lake is another way to appreciate the lake’s beauty, like entering a picturesque scroll painting. Xuanwu Lake is also the “birds’ living room” of the city, where one can observe migrating birds and other avian wonders.

Spring is here in Nanjing and the people and blossoms were out in force - the one to see and admire the other. I avoided the climb and crowd to the Jiming Temple, walked though the gate and then turned left and walked along the lake - flanked by the walls - it was a great walk and very charming with people socializing, sailing, taking pictures - good spot to see the people and some of the historical buildings

Huge lake. There are 5 islets across this lake so plenty to explore and experience. We were there on the last day of the Coffee Festival so that was extra for us. However, it was realllllllly crowded.

There are many places to rent small motor powered boats on the lake for 140 RMB an hour + 500 RMB deposit. The boats can sit four to six people and we thought the ones with the red and green striped sides and the ones with two animal heads to be the fastest. The duck and swan boats are nice because you can have four to five people seated facing each other but the bird head will block your view. The west side was much less busy so we went that way for the views of the wall, Zifeng Tower and Jiming Temple.

Quite a few inexperienced boaters when we went so we kept our distance while we watched people play accidental bumper boats. One hour is more than enough time on the lake and do plan your time because the boats are slow!

Huge lake at a middle of Nanjing. At Xuanwu lake can easily spend whole day by walking and resting for while. During my visit, place was not crowded (before Corona pandemic). My absolutely favourite spot were Bonsai garden. If you want have some peaceful moment during visit busy Nanjing, i strongly recommend Xuanwu lake.

We went here late in the day as part of our Nanjing tour. There’s a tram that takes you through the five islands. Since we don’t speak Chinese our guides made sure we sat with them so we could have someone tell us what we were seeing. It was quite busy as it was a beautiful day, and glad we had tour guides/translators. There are a variety of things to do, including swan boat rentals. It was a good place to end our tour as it isn’t too far from the train station.

Xuanwu lake is pretty muck ok place for a visit. We got there through the main entrance. It was pretty cold evening when we walked around the islands. During the evening the lights made the place much prettier than during day time. I believe most tourists would visit this area when in Nanjing. You can come here just for a short walk. Or you could just jog around the lake. There are many boat operators as well. Shame fishing is not allowed. Cycling on islands seems also banned.

The walls, the lake, the exhibits, the old & the new mixed together...all made a beautiful picture.

We walked the park as well as climbed the stairs to view the lake! The walls aren’t too high to climb. The cool weather made the climb less challenging. For older folks, it was a slope actually, with uneven bricks on the ground...therefore, have to be careful.

Overall, we liked the breeze, the peaceful surroundings, the view looking from the top down... Purchase your tickets...climb up onto the walls first...best to arrive before sunsets. After that, we walked around the lake as it was quite big...we didn’t manage to cover its entirety.

Generally, a pleasant visit indeed.
