The area
Neighbourhood: Jordan / Yau Ma Tei
The Jordan and Yau Ma Tei neighbourhood is where you will find some of the more authentic areas of Hong Kong. Not as glamourous or busy as its neighbours Mong Kok to the north or Tsim Sha Tsui to the south, Yau Ma Tei is often mistakenly overlooked by visitors on their trips to Hong Kong. Exploring parts of this area makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time. A large part of the neighbourhood draws from the rich history of Temple Street, stretching from Jordan to Yau Ma Tei, where a mix of dai pai dongs (outdoor restaurants), market stalls, fortune tellers and old karaoke bars bring out the history and culture of the area. The neighbourhood is a showcase of diversity – different ethnicities, cultures, and a mix of old and new.

Excellent way of getting around in HK
MTR is a great transportation system to get around in HK. It is clean, very efficient and punctual. I am impressed with the safe glass panel installed in all the platforms. It is busy all day long, every day of the week. People are generally polite and line up in a very orderly fashion to get on the train. The Octopus card is convenient and can be used as a form of payment in many retail outlets. It is a super value for people over 60 and it costs only $2 per ride (with a JoyYou Octopus card), anywhere you go. Great benefits for mature citizens of HK.

Most efficient mode of transport in HK
Extremely convenient mode of transport that takes you all of HK, Kowloon and New Territory. I took the subway from Causeway Bay to ShaTin with only one changeover at Admiralty. Previously this trip would 3 change of trains. Best transport in HK, highly recommend.

MTR of hong kong is one of the fastest / cleanist and excellent way of transport in hong kong
if you had to compare transport around any city in the world - you will defnitely agree with everyone that hong kong MTR has one of the finest / cleanist / excellent transport, however try avoid very bust hours like 8-10am and from 5-7pm whereby you may be pushed and shoved due to the heavy movements of people rushing to & from work. taxis / trams / buses / mini buses / uber etc.. are other transport means around the city but MTR is the fastest to beat the traffic and it is one of the cheapest way to see entire hong kong.

    Very convenient, easy to understand
A very convenient way to go around Hong Kong. Very easy to understand. Train transfers are so near so it won't be a hassle transfering to different lines. Best way to go around Hong Kong instead of the overpriced taxis with bad attitide drivers.

Easily the fastest way to travel in Hong Kong
So while I was in Hong Kong I tried out many types of transport. While the Star Ferries, the fast ferry, the trams and the buses were all good, and some I recommend as tourist experiences, the MTR was simply the easiest and fastest way to get around to where I had to go on Hong Kong and Lantau Islands. Get an Octopus card as it makes life easy (I was loaned one) but be aware that recharge machines only accept 50 or 100 HKD dollars. I had been given only HKD 20 notes from my currency exchange in Australia so I needed to either use the customer service points or Seven-Eleven outlets to recharge. You can also use the Octopus card to pay for other things such as restaurants. Also, when I stored the Octopus card with my magnetic phone case it wiped it, however, the customer service point easily fixed that for me with no problem at all. Some of the stations have very interesting art. Google maps will tell you which exit (usually lettered) to take.

    Awesome
Clean, frequent, cheap(ish) and SOOOOO convenient. We basically planned everything around the MTR. Dont travel at peak times though, it can be hell and probably a superspreader event. (take hand sanitiser - who knows what has touched those poles. ick!)

    Very efficient means of transport
The cars and the whole system seem very clean and well kept. Avoid rush hours. Minimal waiting and very good behavior of fellow riders. Boards showing exits to major buildings are very helpful.

Most convenient and affordable way to commute
On this visit we stayed in Sha Tin. From University station going to downtown or any of the tourist attractions, it appeared to be far. However, travelling with a 2 year old, it was quite convenient. We hardly encountered crowded trains, even during rush hour. On our last day we visited disneyland and the mtr ride was very comfortable, except of the disneyland train. It was packed. It was so crowded, we hardly had space to stand.

    The best subway system
You already know this is one of the world's best subway systems. Clean, fast, with incredibly frequent service (usually every 2 minutes). Here are a few drawbacks: 1) MTR stations are huge and you'll do a lot of walking to get out of them. The sprawling junction of Kowloon, West Kowloon, and High-Speed rail stations is incredibly confusing. 2) MTR stations will get you close to your destination, but buses can often be more convenient to board and will get you within steps of where you want to go. 3) Absolutely do not take the MTR during rush hours!!

    Clean and efficient
The MTR is a cheap and efficient way to get around Hong Kong. The stations and carriages are modern and clean. Make sure you queue as indicated on the platform. Stand to the right-hand side of the escalators, the left-hand side is for people who choose to walk. The locals are respectful and courteous, so follow their good example.

Excellent public transport system.
We didn't bother with Oyster cards. We bought one day Tourist cards for unlimited travel each day (H$65) then when we had some cash just bought single fare tickets.
Machines are all in English and very easy to use and take notes and coins.

A simple transportation network that covers most tourist destination in Hong Kong, except the Victoria Peak. MTR is my main transport during my visit. It gets me to Disneyland, Causeway Bay, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and so on in a simple and easy way. Using an Octopus Card is highly recommended as it gives you convenience when tapping in and out of the station.

The MTR to Disneyland Resort is a must to take for travelers heading there.

Cost us 22 dollars to go from central to north point. Thought it was expensive when the Star Ferry line only cost 4 dollars.

We took train, subway and bus rides as we traveled to and within the city. All MTR vehicles were clean and looked nice. It is a fast, safe and inexpensive way of getting around.

We used the MTR to take us from our airport hotel to the city centre.
The train is HUGE! Plenty of seating and spotlessly clean.

MTR was probably the best way to travel around Hong Kong as its fast, convenient and reliable. All of signs were in Chinese and English, easily to navigate in the stations. Highly recommend to grab an Octopus card.

Probably the best MTR Transport System in the world. It is massive but as a first-timer, you will never get lost. There are lots of visible signages in the platform.

TIP: Download the MTR App to get real-time train schedules. This is a time saver.

MTR is Hong Kong's subway and rail system. It connects all of Hong Kong, the Island, and Kowloon in addition to providing access to Hong Kong International Airport. I suggest you buy a top-up Octopus Card, and if you are a senior, ask for the senior card. It allows for a major discount. There is a deposit fee of 50 HK$ plus your top up, 50 HK$ is enough. You will get all this back when you depart HK, less a small fee. Well worth it. Can be used on subway, trams, busses, and other means of transport. Some old subway stations are not disabilities friendly. Check ahead if you are going to a specific station. The trams are also not wheelchair accessible.
