Breathtaking volcanic landscape on the scenic coast of the High Island Reservoir which is worth to spend a day to hang out. It’s a good destination for hikers, photographers & geography students. It’s quite easily accessible both on foot or by taxi.

What a gem to discover. Never expected it to be so nice to see such a place in Hong Kong. Located at north east of Hong king area. You can take public transportation by changing buses and last leg taking the green taxi 30 minutes. Great facility and view of the dam, island, cave, lava column. So unique x highly recommended to visit.

Sai Kung is the most beautiful part of Hong Kong and is reachable from the city by public transport.
First: to terminal stop Sai Kung
bus 92 from Diamond Hill MTR
or mini bus 1A from Choi Hung MTR
or 101M from Hang Hau MTR
or 12 from Po Lam MTR
or red bus from Mong Kok Dundas street
Then, from Sai Kung take Bus 94 to Pak Tam Chung or a taxi to East Dam
From Pak Tam Chung, it is a good nice 3 hr walk to East Dam. From there, you can see the Coffer Dam and walk another half an hour to see the beautiful Long Ker beach. It is about 6 hour return journey between the Pak Chung bus stop and East Dam. If you get tired, you can call a taxi to get back from East Dam to Sai Kung. It is better to go to the visitors centre at Pak Tam Chung or Sai Kung before the start of the hike to get the map and taxi telephone numbers first.

It was a sunny day.We had lunch in a coffee shop in Sai Kung. We did not take a boat to see the geo-park. Instead ,we hired a taxi to go to the East Dam of the High Island reservoir. The taxi driver dropped us in front of a rain shelter built by the Lion Club. We asked him his call-station phone no. We walked down the sloop to the dam. On the way,we saw the beautiful slope of the sraped rock. All of a sudden, the sky turned dark and rain fell very heavily. Lucky enough, we rushed back to the rain shelter. At this moment,we found that we had mobile phone signal inside the shelter only. The rain last for more than 1/2 hour. during this period, we saw speed boats of the Marine police cruising through the blow-hole a-far-off and one or two container carrying ships. Shortly after the rain stopped,we saw two young men carrying very heavy hiking gear and camping accessories coming up from the other side of the hill. They told us that they had been camping at the beach down below for two nights. They enjoyed the stay very much. The beaches were clean and nice for swimming and good place to set a bon-fire. Then, they called taxi inside the shelter and told us that we had better reserve more phone nos.,because not many taxi drivers would like to come. After 20 min. their taxi came and drove them away. When we called the no. which was given by the driver who took us there. At least 4 drivers refused to pick us. At last, we called the no. which was given by the young men,we got a taxi driver's responds. He came after 20 min. Seeing the beautiful scenery, its worth our while to visit the East Dam again.

For those who want to find out the truth behind this statement: Hong Kong is a small place with an exceptionally diverse landscape. Very true, indeed. In particular if you've been to this UNESCO Geopark. Check out those hexagonal rock columns, and appreciate High Island Reservoir, the world's first reservoir built from ocean coastlines.

We reached Sai Kung at 3 pm+. We took a bus to Pak Tam Chung. Then from Pak Tam Chung, we hopped on a taxi and reached East Dam of High Island Reservoir in 20 minutes. Spent about HK$ 100+. Worth it. Had great view of the reservoir along the way. We even managed to climbed Fa Shan, overseeing Po Pin Chau, East Dam and the reservoir. Stayed till 7 pm+ and managed to see the sunset and West Dam on the way back to Sai Kung on a taxi.

I only had one day at the Geopark and spent the morning at the East Dam, paying 100HKD for the round trip bus and another 100HKD for the guided tour at the East Dam. Most people took only the round trip bus and explored the East Dam on their own, which is perfectly fine too, as there are well posted panels explaining the rock formations along the way. However, I was very glad I paid for the guided tour as my tour guide, Mr Raymond, was awesome! I am sure I would not have learnt as much about the history behind the construction of the East Dam, nor appreciated the beauty / wonder of the hexagonal rocks, the marvel of the engineering behind the dam, if not for his deep knowledge and keen enthusiasm. Kudos to him for an extremely enriching, enjoyable and memorable morning! :)
The Geopark is a great reason to visit Hong Kong. The beauty of the Geopark, the fresh air and wind brought smiles and lifted spirits. It is worth forsaking food, shopping and the other typical sightseeing activities for her. Would love to return!
Tips: Check the weather forecast before you go, as there is no shelter at East Dam. There is a free, clean public toilet there. There is hardly any trekking during the tour, the only strenous part is walking up / down a long slope. But all paths are paved and anyone with a basic level of mobility and fitness should be able to manage. Do bring at least a windbreaker as the wind is very strong at the top of the dam.
The East Dam tour starts at 9.30am and finishes at 12.30pm. I checked the website the night before and could not book the same tour online, but there were available slots when I turned up in person about 15 minutes before the start of the tour. The tours are not available daily as the part-time guides are there only mostly on the weekends. The local guides are most comfortable speaking Cantonese and they rotate amongst themselves to guide different areas of the huge Geopark.
The Volcanic Discovery centre (as shown in picture), where I booked my tour, is next to the Sai Kung bus terminal. It is next to the waterfront and pier. Address is 18 Wai Man Road Sai Kung 西贡海滨公园 (Do NOT go to geopark visitor centre, which is about 2km away.) There are many stalls and vendors at the waterfront where you can book many boat tours too but I did not get those. There is adequate food and dining, shops like 7-11, bakery shops just next to the bus terminal as well as a huge, free, clean public toilet next to the Volcanic Discovery Centre. There is apparently free public wifi just outside too, but I did not have time to try to connect. I also did not have time to explore the displays inside the centre but they looked really educational.

The walk is relatively easy if you catch a cab from Pak Tam Chung. As private cars are not allowed to access beyond Pak Tam Chung, you can either catch a cab in or hike in. Cab ride costed around HKD75 one way & around 15 mins. The views on the way in are nice. The East Dam view is lovely too. Byt there are no trees and the area is totally open. Do bring a cap... At the end of the trail is a sea cave, the waters are crystal clear. Catching a cab back might be a problem, try to go in the morning, and leave before noon, if there are people going in, the cabs will be waiting to take passengers on the return journey. It seems on Sundays, you can catch a mini bus in but we havent tried before.

The staggered hexagonal rock was formed about 140 million years ago. Really amazing to have a short walk here (Around 2 hours for a round trip)
You can go there by below way:
1. Take a NT Green minibus #No. 9A from Pak Tam Chung to East Dam (New Service) Operating Hours: 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. (Every Sunday and Public Holidays)
2. Take a taxi from Sai Kung town center or Pak Tam Chung to East Dam
*Not easy to grab a taxi from East Dam to Sai Kung. We queued for an hour and then use apps to call the taxi with extra service charge finally.
3. East Dam Half-day Tour at Sai Kung Town Center Volcano Discovery Center

Located at the very east of Hong Kong, Highland Reservoir has one of the biggest capacity in Hong Kong.
You can take a taxi from the Sai Kung town center and ask them to bring you to East Dam (東壩). That will cost you around $120 for the ride.
Arrive at the East Dam you will see the spectacular tiffany blue of the reservoir. I brought a drone with me that day and I recommend you to do so too. You can see over tetrapods lining up to protect the dam from the sea waves of the South China Sea.
If you look to the south east of the dam you will also see Po Pin Chau which is a natural islet separated from the mainland due to erosion.
Took you around 2-3 hours for the whole journey around and there’s no store there so you better bring some water there.
You can take taxi back to Sai Kung after that so that’s quite convenient.
