About
Ngong Ping Cable Car - the gateway to start your Lantau adventure in Hong Kong! Ngong Ping Cable Car connects downtown Tung Chung and Ngong Ping on Lantau Island. Adopting a safe and reliable bi-cable ropeway, the cable car is first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong. The journey begins from Tung Chung, crossing Tung Chung Bay to reach the angle station on Airport Island and turning 60 degrees towards North Lantau. You will be greeted with the vistas of the distant and vast South China Sea and the rolling greens of North Lantau Country Park. At the comfort of the cabin, enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the Hong Kong International Airport, verdant, mountainous terrain of Lantau Island, the Big Buddha and the 360-degree view of Ngong Ping Plateau. Alight from the cable car cabin and you will arrive at Ngong Ping Village – the best starting point for your Hong Kong visit to “must-see” attractions such as the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Tai O fishing village, etc.

- Czar EmmanuelManila, Philippines10,221 contributionsNgong Ping village is worth-visiting!Taking Ngong Ping 360 is the best way to visit Ngong Ping village, the Po Lin Monastery, and the majestic Tian Tan Buddha of Lantau Island. It's a 20-25min cable car ride either with the "standard" cable car or the more expensive "crystal" cable car. The ride offers you a spectacular view of the island and the sea, particularly of the HZMB that connects Hong Kong and Macau. We took the ride on a weekend, which also happened to be a holiday, and the queue was very long. The first area you'll see from the cable car station is the Ngong Ping village with its array of restaurants, souvenir shops, etc. Next comes the 1906 Po Lin Monastery, and finally the 268-step stairs that take you to the biggest sitting statue of Buddha in the world. The view from the top was amazing! There are other places to visit on Lantau Island, but the three sites I have mentioned are the most popular ones. Highly recommended! 👌Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024
- Andy L.Jersey City, New Jersey5 contributionsOverpriced but fun activity. We had a great time, although we thought it was a little on the expensive side for what it was (Strictly talking about the gondola ride). Still, if you're here and have the time, it's a nice activity. We did the one way trip up, took the 21 bus to Tai O. After our exploration there, we took the 1 bus to Mui Wo Ferry Terminal and took the Ferry to Central Terminal, then did the Tram stuff afterwards. Made all our connections with no trouble relying just on Google Maps informing us when the busses/ferries departed.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 June 2024
- Ug O17 contributionsIt's an absolutely stunning vista. We went on a weekend, so there was a big line to board our vehicle. Verdant mountains with a view of the Hong Kong Harbor and the airport in the distance. Would love to come back and use the crystal vehicle the next time.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 July 2024
- Val D44 contributionsLovely ViewsWe loved the Crystal Cabin and were lucky to travel on a clear, sunny day so we were able to see the scenery well and ride was fantastic and had lots of great views to photograph. We just purchased tickets and went independently as none of the tours suited us. With the money we saved we took a cab to Chung Tung and it was absolutely worth it to drive over some of the lovely bridges between the islands. We found the climb to Big Buddha pretty easy (we are fit seniors) especially as we went early to avoid the heat of the day. The temple and gardens were lovely and being early it was not crowded. There were plenty of places to buy drinks and lunch.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 September 2024
- Himanshu GuptaIndia52 contributionsGreat Views but not the Cheapest optionThis is an absolute gem you can't miss! The cable car ride is definitely not for the faint of heart—if the winds pick up, you'll feel the thrill of the turbulence! But trust me, the breathtaking views are well worth it. It's the quickest way to reach the top of the hill, especially when the boarding station isn't too crowded.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2024
- PriscillaTanSingaporeSingapore, Singapore106 contributionsGreat views! The views from the cable car between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping were great. Upon arriving, you’ll immediately see Ngong Ping Village, a very touristy stretch that’s been set up really just for tourists. I do like that they tried to emulate an old Chinese village though. Having gone all the way there, it would be a must to climb the 250 steps up to reach the Tian Tan Buddha. The views from up there are amazing. I do wish the staff at the cable car station had provided better guidance and checked my ticket properly though. I paid for a Crystal + cabin, but rode a Crystal cabin. :(Visited October 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 November 2024
- BradHong Kong, China1,81,237 contributionsOne of Hong Kong's most popular attractionsThis is the cable car attraction which transports passengers from the Tung Chung Lower Terminus outside of CityGate shopping mall in Tung Chung up to the Ngong Ping Village in the mountains of Lantau Island. The cable car ride is 25 minutes in length and cars hold between 8-10 passengers each. Opening hours are usually 10am to 6pm but vary slightly from time to time. They also have periodic down says for maintenance at times so best to check all on the Ngong Ping 360 website before making way out to ride to the cable car. You can also purchase tickets online in advance, allowing you to skip the queue at the ticket counter and proceed straight to the second queue for boarding the cable cars. Note that there are two types of cable cars. Regular cars and Crystal Cabins which have glass floors allowing you to see below during your ride. This is a neat option if you are willing to spend a bit more for the crystal cabins. During the cable car ride, passengers will travel through the mountains of Lantau as they ascend up to the village. You will see Tung Chung, HKG airport and eventually the Big Buddha as you approach the upper terminus. It is an enjoyable, smooth and nice ride with lots of photograph opportunities when sky conditions are good. Do note that on cloudy or foggy days, visibility can be impaired but the ride can still be a nice experience even when travelling through the clouds in the sky.Visited November 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 November 2024
- Adventure557324870281 contributionGood ExperienceThe experience was great, and I saw many things. However, it is best to come early since there will be a long line for the cable car to descend (at least 30 minutes). Despite this, the staff is very attentive and kind, and they even handed out food, warm water, and heating pads for free since it was winter.Visited December 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2024
- Usia2014Calgary, Canada1,955 contributionsAmazing sceneryThe cable car ride was very scenic and we really enjoyed it. We had a nice and sunny day. It was great to see the statue to the Big Buddha from afar in the cable car and then up close it was massive! We did not have to wait long to get on because we were there mid afternoon on a Tuesday. So the place was not too busy. Also, we left a good half hour before the scheduled closing time so we only waited about 15 minutes to get on. By the time we got on it was getting closer to closing time and the line ups were really long.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2025

As I had little time on a business trip, my visit fell on a Sunday. I was there early, expecting a big crowd, and I hadn't booked a ticket in advance. And lo and behold - the line to buy tickets was very short and in 10 minutes I was already sitting in the gondola: I recommend the Crystal Plus, it's absolutely spectacular. And you seem to get into a fast lane. The ride is absolutely impressive - the view through the glass floor is phenomenal. I chose the lunch break for the return journey - there weren't many people and by chance I got a whole gondola to myself. An unforgettable experience for me!

There are relatively few people queuing up to take the Crystal Cable Car, and one card can only seat 8 people.
It feels so good, when the cable car goes up, you will feel like you are in mid-air! It’s worth checking in, uh, like! XD

Booking queues were actually longer than buying it off the counter. When boarding from Lantau they usually put individual/ groups in separate carts, so if you're in a very big group separate yourselves otherwise they'll stuff you all in one. They do this for tourist photo sales purposes which you will get at the top. Coming back down from Ngong Ping they put everyone together in the same Cart, so I recommend taking all your cable cart photos while going up. Must recommend activity in HK

The ride is spectacular and the big Buddha is definitely a must-see. But: Even with a ticket booked through the official website, you have to wait between 1-2 hours in never-ending and totally chaotic queues before you even get to the gondola! The whole thing couldn't be more badly organized!

Worth visiting once, we took the crystal cable car ride down from Ngong Ping village, which has a monastery atop and the giant Buddha. The cable car ride was nice and peaceful, with a beautiful view of the harbor, airport, and the town of Tung Chun. The crystal car has a glass bottom which adds a certain thrill to the ride.

The view at the big Buddha was amazing. Although, I think if the queuing lines are more organized, it will bring a better experience. It's because we can't see a proper/noticable sign of telling my family and I where to find the right queue. We paid to be faster, but we ended up queuing for 30 minutes for nothing. I hope in the future, you can make bigger and more noticable signs to remind visitors where to queue. Thank you for your time!

Ngong Ping 360 was the highlight of our Hong Kong trip. The cable car ride was an adventure, and the view of the Buddha statues was simply stunning. Ngong Ping Village was also a great place to explore and learn about the local culture. Highly recommended for families!*

My wife and I and our daughter arrived in Hong Kong on a Cathay Pacific flight at 7am and as we were only departing at 9pm, we decided to spend the day doing the Ngong Ping 360 Lantau Cultural Exploration Tour.
We took the bus to the Tung Chung cable car station where we then took the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to Ngong Ping Village. We chose the glass bottom “Crystal cabin” which was a good choice as it accentuated the magnificent views.
After strolling around the fascinating village, we met our guide at the designated time and meeting point, whereby we attended an interesting artistic flower tea demonstration at Linong Tea House. We were also able to sample the tea which was very pleasant.
We then boarded a bus and were transported to the Tai O Fishing Village where we were shown around and visited traditional shacks on stilts. Thereafter, we boarded a boat and cruised through the waterways of Tai O. We were also extremely fortunate to experience a close encounter with playful white dolphins, who spent some time swimming around our boat.
Upon our return to the Tai O village, we were given some vouchers to spend at selected eateries and we sampled some local food, including fish balls and sugar doughnuts which were delicious.
After returning to Ngong Ping by bus, we said goodbye to our guide and continued to explore on our own. We visited the big Tian Tan Buddha statue by climbing the 268 steps and then visited the Po Lin Monastery, both of which were extremely fascinating. We also continued strolling around and exploring Ngong Ping Village, where-after we took the cable car back to Tung Chung and then the bus back to the airport.
Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience which we would definitely recommend.

If you are staying in Tung Chung just go there the day before and by them. We stayed at the Silveri and our concierge booked them for us the day before. Most people seem to book on Klook. We arrived at 9.30am and we were on the cable car by 10.30am later in the day the queue is horrific.

Written 25 July 2019
Hong Kong is a huge city and it is unlikely that you will run into protesters especially if you visit during the week as most protests are on the weekends. If you are out on Lantau island where the cable car and airport is, then you have nothing to worry about.

And would it be possible to travel early by bus straight going to the village like 7-8am ??
