The Old Bank of China Building is built in traditional Chinee style, including symbolic guardian lions. The Old Bank of China Building was supplanted by the modern Bank of China Building, designed by Chinese-American architect I M Pei. It's said said to be the finest building in Hong Kong. The Old Bank of China Building remains a testimony to times past.

…means a high rating from me, even if you cannot actually do much inside! HK has torn down nearly all of its old buildings so to have this still standing to admire is great!

Originally, this place was the old town hall of the 19th century. In the first half of the 20th century, it was demolished and a bank building was built in its place. The bank was designed by Palmer & Turner and built in 1951. At the time of construction, it was considered the tallest building in Hong Kong.

The old Bank of China building would not be out of place as a Gotham city building in a Batman movie. Eclipsed by the new Bank of China building and and dwarfed by surrounding modern skyscrapers, it no longer gets much attention but I quite like it. The granite edifice has an art-deco feel about it and a solid quality. It couldn’t be more different from the new Bank of China which is all glass and angles.
Two traditional stone lions with snarling mouths and fiercely popping eyes were guarding the front doors but have been recently covered up.
Built in 1950 and completed the following year, this was the bank’s major office until the new Bank of China was built in the 1990s. It played a central role in the 1967 riots against British rule. Anti-British banners were unfurled across the building and loud-speakers were mounted on the building to broadcast revolutionary music and to send messages, encouraging people to rise up against the colonial rulers.
Today it is most well known as home of the China Club, an exclusive members/guests only club with the best duck pancakes, a beautiful library room and views over the city lights.
Although this is not a must-see on its own, it is centrally located and is very close to several other significant buildings. Next door, is Norman Foster’s famous HSBC building and across the road are Statue Square and the Old Supreme Court.

Built upon the earlier and original grounds of Hong Kong City Hall (1860s), the Old Bank of China (BOC) building was constructed in 1951. At 17 floors, it was the tallest building in Hong Kong for 12 years until the Mandarin Oriental (25 floors) took the crown in 1963.

This was the headquarters for BOC for nearly 40 years until the much celebrated new Bank of China building was opened in 1990. The bank then changed hands for a while before returning to BOC as a branch office in 2001.

These days, the old Bank of China is dwarfed by modern skyscrapers. However, it is still interesting to see when passing through Central. The exterior architecture is probably best described as NYC style Art Deco. In this regard, the Old BOC does look as if it could very well have been the bottom section of the Empire State Building. There are two beautiful guardian lion statues along Des Voeux Road building entrance that are worth seeing as well.

The former HSBC building, which was replaced by the Sir Norman Foster building next door and now housing the famous China Club, this building is well worth the photo opportunity whilst in the area

It is amazing to see this old building dwarfed against the modern skyscrpaers of Hong Kong. It kind of puts the place into perspective.

Pride of the New China, this building was completed in 1950 at a height meant to tower slightly above its neighbor, Hongkong & Shanghai Bank former headquarters (since rebuilt by Sir Norman Foster). Currently its top 3 floors house the China Club, an exclusive members-only venue with good food, high quality Chinese contemporary art and retro-chic Revolutionary décor. The outdoor terrace provides great views over Central. No way to talk your way in if you are not a member, but do not miss a chance to get invited there!

What my review title says, plus, the food is great, interior is great too - old-school British colonial, just love it. After eating go to the top floor where you can enjoy crazy view of central city-scape. On your way you can see some great artwork on the staircase walls.
