The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

It is a skyscraper over 400 meters high, so it stands out from Kowloon on the opposite bank. As the area is one of the world's leading financial centers, it is a huge complex that houses office buildings for financial institutions such as banks and securities companies from around the world, as well as hotels and shopping malls. It has a rich and luxurious atmosphere.

Hong Kong is not short of is tall buildings but you can’t miss the two soaring IFC towers on the harbour-front. These are the towers that Batman leapt between in The Dark Knight. Standing at the top of 2IFC, with Hong Kong city spread out below him, he plunges towards 1IFC to break in and track down the loot that the Joker had stolen from the Gotham City Bank.
IFC is one of the most distinctive landmarks on the HK skyline. Mostly it houses the city’s banking and finance industry. A large-scale commercial complex, it includes the 1IFC and 2IFC towers, the Four Seasons Hotel and the luxurious IFC shopping mall.
Tower 2 is the taller of the two towers and was built in 2003, five years after 1IFC. It’s still only the second tallest in HK although interestingly, its 88 floors don’t include some numbers. Numbers with “4” in them are considered unlucky because the word “4” sounds awfully similar to the word, death in Cantonese.
A viewing deck on 55th floor offers a stunning outlook. Officially, this is the HK Monetary Authority Information Office but it’s regularly open to the public and once you’ve registered at the front desk, it’s free to enter. It’s a stunning view. Although it was shut for a while, I believe it’s now open again.
The shopping mall is conveniently located near the Star Ferry and sits right above the Hong Kong Airport Express Station and MTR. Apart from restaurants and high-end shopping, there are also some very good views over the city and the harbour from the Apple shop, the Level 3 restaurants and the Shake Shack outdoor area on level 4.

In Tower Two the helpful staff directed us where we had to go for "Level 55" - a free museum/display which happens to have one of the best views in Hong Kong. You need to show photo ID and they give you a visitor pass to wear whilst in the building. We sat up there for ages on the comfy chairs enjoying the view of Hong Kong.

IFC is the tallest building in HK with a huge shopping mall. If you're a tourist and want to enjoy the harbour views with a drink, I would recommend you buy some drinks in the supermarket city super in the shopping mall then take the escalators to the rooftop of the shopping mall (not the tall office building!). There are plenty of free benches where you can chill and enjoy the harbour views! Views at no costs!

While most people go to the IFC to shop in the huge mall, it is possible to go up to the 55th floor observation deck for free! Go downstairs to the lobby and get your visitor pass at the desk right in front of the elevators. You will need picture ID (we used our passports). You can learn about the history of Hong Kong money while taking in the sights. Can't beat the view or the price!

This building is fantastic and huge as we learnt it is the 7th highest building in the world it looks modern and high end on the outside and also carries this on when you get inside this building is also linked with the Kowloon MTR station so it gives you easy access to everything you would need in Hong Kong.
This building looks fantastic from all around Hong Kong and stands out from all the others. There's a number of restaurants and high end designer stores. It's very modern and clean throughout. On the upper floors of the building is the plush Carlton ritz hotel. Our main reason to visit was for the sky 100 observation deck which has stunning 360 views of Hong Kong.

The guard in the lobby told us the observation deck was closed. This was the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday. They either closed it permanently, or the guard did not want to deal with us.

I went up to see, if it was worth it to take the kids.
Oh yes. Not open air, but really is a great view AND an interactive exhibition about the Hong Kong Dollar.
The way up is not obvious to find, does not seem to be signposted in the IFC, but worth the effort.
Ground floor of the 2 IFC office building, where very nice personel signs you in (picture ID) and leads you to the elevators.
On the 55th floor (the only stop for these elevators), the exhibition about HongKong’s money is quite informative.
The view is great. Not 360 degrees, but well worth it.
Just check the actual opening hours.

Visited on a Saturday. Shopping centre is ok, some restaurants on the upper floors are interesting and reached by lift.

Can you go up to the top with a bottle of wine in the evening and watch the sunset?

We are a family of 4 (parents and two adult girls ages 21 and 18 years old). We would like to see the fireworks in Hong Kong
on New Years Eve 2016-2017. We would be happy to see them from the best hotel. Could you suggest a hotel with great views from your room or rooftop?
Could we go to the IRC Rooftop and see the fireworks at 12:00 Midnight? Would we have to stand for hours to see them. I can't stand for long periods of time and would need to sit often.
