The area
Neighbourhood: Tsim Sha Tsui
Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the major tourist and shopping areas of Hong Kong. With a high concentration of hotels, retail shops and commercial offices – it’s a busy and bustling neighbourhood that never sleeps. On the surface, Tsim Sha Tsui seems to only feature an abundant number of high-end retail stores selling designer brands and jewelry, owing to its popularity with high-budget shopping tours. However, it also contains a diverse range of attractions for the entire family. Whether taking a walk in Kowloon Park, exploring museums, going shopping or grabbing a bite to eat – Tsim Sha Tsui has something for everyone.

It was mildly entertaining and my son was amazed
The skyline alone is spectacular and a must see. The show was so-so. It wasn’t choreographed like the Bellagio water fountain in Vegas but they tried. If you’re in the area - go see it once, but you don’t need to go out of your way.

    City lights and music show
Light and music show that is unique for visitors of Victoria Harbour. The music emitted follows the building lights on the Hong Kong Island. A must see for first time Hong Kong visitors.

    10 minutes of Free Entertainment
It's worth seeing at least once. Plus, it's free. Don't miss this choreographed light and audio show involving both sides of Victoria Harbor. You can watch anywhere along Avenue of Stars but the audio is heard better near the Star Ferry and old clock tower. Although, we found the show impressive, locals mentioned that the complexity and razzle dazzle has diminished over the years.

    Not as spectacular now
Last saw this show 10 years ago. Went to have a look during our visit on December 2023. The show is not as good as previously. The music was not as upbeat and the light seems to be lesser. Though the duration was still 10 minutes.

    Skyscrapers by night
Our family of two adults, a 9 year old and a 6 year old watched this show many times during the busy Chinese New Year holidays. On arrival to HK, we had dinner at Outback restaurant in East TST and walked to the Avenue of Stars to pick a seat and watch the 8pm light show (see my separate reviews). There is some music audible from Avenue of Stars to accompany the show but it's quite faint. They should develop an app or have some kind of facility on the Discover HK tourism website to play some music or commentary. Other spots we watched the show from include dinner at Peking Garden and Choi Fook Royal Banquet restaurants (see my separate reviews). The lights on the skyscrapers and lasers shining from them are a bit of fun. It doesn't last long but it's still a tourist must-do when in Hong Kong. Enjoy.

    Symphony of boredom
2 night stay in HK. City is as great as ever. 1st night went to see the 'light show'. Music low, a few lazers on select buildings and no co-ordination with music-lights. We left after 5 mins as did alot of people. Saw it years ago and it was good- it now just feels even HK tourist board are bored of it. Skyline is lit up and impressive regardless and the show doesn't add anything sadly

    Underwhelming and disappointing
I didn't expect a lot from this but thought I would watch it because it is always on one of the to do things in Hong Kong. I stood on the Tsim Sha Shui side watching Central. There were lots of people lining the waterfront but don't worry, you don't miss much. It started on time and I was confused what was actually going on. I couldn't hear the music properly and the lights did not seem to be in sync with the music. I didn't know where to look, there were lasers from some building tops and other lights just coming on and off. Maybe I was disappointed because I have seen spectacular light shows in other parts of the world. I believe it goes for 10 minutes but I only lasted 6 minutes and that was stretching it! It's nice to be at the waterfront at night and see the city lights but don't go out of your way to see it. Also avoid paying the extra price for harbour cruises during this time. Not worth it.

A remarkable show that costs nothing but 10 minutes of your time. It goes off like clockwork at 8PM each evening. The best place to view is along the Avenue of Stars on the Kowloon side of Victoria Harbour. We also paid about $25US to go to the 100th floor of the International Commerce Centre (Sky100) to watch, but I would not recommend this since it was free and better from the Avenue of Stars.

I was only in Hong Kong for a layover and had maybe 8 hours in the city, but it was definitely worth it to take the ferry across and wait to see the light show. The scale is ridiculous and it's a cool experience to see an entire waterfront of a massive city doing a music integrated light show. Unique and a must do if you have the chance!

Underwhelming, waste of time.. I wouldn't recommend that you go out of your way to see this. Music & lights were not coordinated at all. Just seemed a bunch of buildings with their ad spaces lit up and orchestra music playing on speakers. A lot of tourists waited for the show to begin, but we didn't know what we were watching at all. Lasted about 10 mins only then people started leaving. There is no entrance fee but quite a walk from the nearest MTR station.
Go to Disneyland instead for a fireworks/ lights music show or even to a rooftop bar with a nice view of the harbor.

On the harbor promenade right in front of the old clock tower, music is played on the Kowloon side while the skyscrapers on the Hong Kong side blink and glitter with multicolored lights.

Ferry boats, also lit up, sail in the strait.

There is actually no connection between the music and the lights, but it's still a magical experience that makes a visit to the old British imperial jewel unforgettable.

But come exactly at 8 PM or earlier - the music stops at 8:10 PM.

Really, this has got to be one of the worst overhyped and over-marketed attractions in Hong Kong. The view itself is legendary and stunning, but come 8pm, they all start flashing in an out of sync kind of way with a soundtrack that really doesn’t do anything to lift the spectacle. It would make more sense to just leave some thoughtful music playing over the cheap low quality speakers dotted around, whilst dusk settles and the lights maintain the usual standard patterns - this is already stunning and doesn’t require the overwork and pretence of what looks like the security guards at each of the buildings on a conference call being instructed by someone with no sense of timing to “you flick your lights on and off now…. now your turn”.

Each time I have taken a visitor to see this (because they were so eager based on the HK Tourist Board inflated marketing and photoshopping of the imagery), they are left underwhelmed and standing besides us are loads of other tourists who very quickly realise the world famous light show is pretty flat.

Tip to the HK Tourist Board - let those things that are already amazing about HK shine through on their own merit, and stop the dishonest misleading marketing.

Not worth the time or effort. The buildings are lit up as they always are and then they add lasers from three buildings. The show has no relationship to the music that plays and there is no evidence of any choreography between buildings. You wouldn’t have any idea there was actually a show going on unless someone told you. Frankly it is surprising they even bother.

It was terrible because it was hyped up by the media and Hong Kong tourism. nothing much to see and hear. The buildings are good, but marketing it as "Symphony of Lights" and top thing to do in HK, I am expecting so much better to see and hear. It's not worth the time and crowd. The building lights are not synchronized. Not much of laser lights. I was expecting that the sea will have so many laser lights, and almost all buildings are changing colors/lights that are synchronized to the beat. But no. A local concert in our town is 100% far better than this. Singapore's MBS is like 20 times better than HK.

We waited for a couple of hours getting a good vantage point but the display was not worth waiting or staying for. If you are a traveler and have seen light shows in other places then you will be disappointed. If you have never seen one before then maybe its good to go.
