Lots of Local Colour

Sheung Wan is necessarily not on tourists’ radar as a place to stay but it’s a good choice. It’s centrally located on the western side of the city and will appeal to those who prefer something with more local colour. It’s an interesting and lively pocket of Hong Kong, with small galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars sitting alongside traditional buildings and shops, temples and street art. Sometimes words like ‘gritty’ or ‘authentic’ are euphemisms for ‘dodgy’ and ‘shady’. However Sheung Wan is very safe and I’d feel quite comfortable walking about day or night. It’s close enough to Central that you can walk (allow about 15 min) and is just 1 stop away on the MTR train (3 stops to Wan Chai). For those with an interest in local lifestyle and culture and who care to explore, there is a lot to see. The local wet markets and traditional medicine and herb vendors are filled with interesting and often curious goods. As is, the dried seafood market along Des Voeux Rd. Other points of interest include the historic Man Mo temple and Hong Kong’s best known antique streets, Hollywood Rd and Cat St Market (Upper Lascar Row). In keeping with Sheung Wan’s eclectic nature, you will find fine art galleries and antique dealers along Hollywood Rd, then a few streets away you’ll find the other end of the spectrum at Cat St where street stalls and shops sell bric-a-brac and curios ranging from Mao statues to movie posters, netsuke and jade, old watches and ginger jars. Similarly, Sheung Wan has Michelin listed restaurants like Frantzén’s Kitchen and Samsen but around the corner, you also have cheap and cheerful places like the Sheung Wan Cooked Food Market with neon lights and plastic tables.

The area
Neighbourhood: Sheung Wan
Unlike most of Hong Kong’s other popular districts, Sheung Wan welcomes wanderers with an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Art galleries are plentiful and boutique cafés are tucked away in every side street in the sub district known as “PoHo.” Browse through the vintage clothing and handmade leather goods stores – it’s no surprise fashionistas flock to this area. History enthusiasts will be rewarded with sites of beautiful architecture, reflecting Sheung Wan’s past as one of the earliest settlements by British forces. As night falls, the entertainment scene reveals itself to be just as laid back with its private kitchens, speakeasies and underground bars dotted throughout the area. When in Sheung Wan, everyday feels like the weekend.

Sheung Wan is a popular district just west of Central in Hong Kong Island. This is a great area for basing staying in Hong Kong if you want to be close to the vibrant restaurant, coffee shop and bar scene as well as being close to MTR stations that can connect you quickly to the rest of the city. This district is where you also find the important ferry terminal for sea bound journeys to neighbouring Macau.

There are some good mid-range hotels and boutique hotel apartment options in the Sheung Wan area as well as a fair amount of retail street side shops, the PMQ heritage and speciality shop venue, department stores like Wing On as well as quick access to some of the highest end malls in the city like IFC and Landmark in nearby Central.

Sheung Wan is where you also find interesting art galleries and antique street markets around Hollywood Road. The district is also know for the traditional Chinese medicine and herbal shops that line various streets such as Bonham Strand and Wing Lok Street. Along with Central, the district has become something of a street art scene as well, with quite a few nice graffiti artworks on the sides over various buildings.

Within the district you will also find the impressive Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road and less impressive but still interesting Western Market building at the western end of Des Voeux Road Central. This is also a good spot to pick up the historic Ding Ding Tram for a ride through various districts of Hong Kong Island.

This area has everything and is very close to the Macau Ferry Terminal. Our hotel was a 2 min walk from the Sheung Wan subway station which made this an ideal area to call home for 3 nights.

We stayed in Sheung Wan in the Ibis Hotel. It is a little walk to the central area but more traditional Hong Kong. There are fewer skyscrapers but lots of traditional fish and supplies stores. There was no problem with noise and not so crowded. The hotel is a little tired in places but we had a lovely view from the 32nd floor. A good breakfast selection was included and the meals available were good and reasonably priced.

Sheung Wan is a great location to stay in, for a nice relaxing visit. It has a nice neighborly ambiance, yet it is just a walkable distance away from the hustle of Central, and a few tram stops away from Wanchai and Causeway Bay. The area is filled with very interesting shops, small eateries and antique stores along Hollywood Road. If you're going to and from Macau, this is just the stop to stay in. Also, the A11 bus going to and from the airport stops in this area, so it will save you time and money.

Here you have less of the fancy shiny skyscrapers of Central, and more of a "traditional" Hong Kong/China, with skyscrapers nonetheless (although mainly residential ones), stores, and parks (like Hollywood Road Park). There are plenty of shops of all sorts here, including all these bizarre dried seafood items, as well as plenty of tea/flower infusion shops. There are also interesting sites to see (such as the Man Mo Temple), and it's just nice to walk around and experience this "different" lifestyle...

Slightly off the beaten track I like this area as it gives a feel of a more traditional Hong Kong. Take the MTR then walk from the station up to Hollywood Road with Man Mo temple and the antique shops. Lots of more traditional medicine/herb vendors to be seen alongside more modern restaurants/bars. Streets are narrow with high rise sides giving that close up feel. All very safe to explore.

Sheung Wan is located on Hong Kong main island. Next to it is Central, which is part of financial/biz district. Sheung want have eateries and streets selling herbs and dried goods at Wing Lok Street.
On the streets, you can see the trams. Travellers are encouraged to go there to soak in the atmosphere of rustic side of HK.
