About
Perfectly framed by mountains and surrounded by the beautiful South China Sea, Discovery Bay, a serene resort development on the northeastern coast of Lantau Island, is a peaceful oasis away from hectic Hong Kong. The destination offers a wide selection of dining options and leisure activities. D'Deck, the renowned oceanfront alfresco dining hotspot boasts 20 restaurants with most commanding spectacular views of the sea and Disneyland fireworks. The 400-metre-long beach, hiking and walking trails, waterfront boardwalk, horse-drawn carriage, and the deluxe resort hotel Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong, present a total resort experience for leisure and getaway, yet it is just a step away from downtown Central, the Hong Kong International Airport, nearby attractions such as Hong Kong Disneyland, Ngong Ping 360, Po Lin Monastery, Giant Buddha and Wisdom Path. Take the ferry from Central Pier 3, or shuttle bus from the Airport, Tung Chung and Sunny Bay MTR stations.

Because I live so far away, I rarely come here.
There are many residential buildings here, as dense as some foreign towns, and shuttle buses are available to travel around the area. You can go and see it when you have time, but it's a bit inconvenient to live there. Because the transportation is only by boat out of Central, and there are specialized vehicles entering and leaving Sunny Bay. If you want to go to other parts of Hong Kong, it feels very far.

A friend invited a few of us to play tennis at the Discovery Bay Club. We took the ferry which was nice and easy. The Discovery Bay area is different from the crowded center parts of Hong Kong. It has a beautiful and relaxing ambiance. I was told many professionals live here and work in central Hong Kong. That seems to be a nice combination. This area also has more international flavor. It is also extremely close (a 20-minute ride) to the International Airport.
It's a hidden gem in Hong Kong.

Discovery Bay is a real estate development on Lantau Island that has been developed over many years. It is a mix of commercial and residential properties that are mainly up-market. It's attractive to expats because of its relaxed lifestyle and sense of community. Cars are banned, for example. Outdoor activities, and dining, is popular. Recreations such s sailing and golf are catered for. Here's an ice rink, too. The ferry to Discovery Bay takes around 25 minutes. Friends of mine say it's a great place to live.

Don't be tempted by its environment. Many 'phases' of Discovery Bay were built over 30 years ago. Maintenance has been poor. In particular, reportedly the Beach Village (Phase 1) received orders from the government to undergo major repair and renovation. The sideyards of some houses there are smelly, probably due to sewage issues. The major renovation will start very soon, and will last many months (example - Phase 5 renovation going on for over a year.) Renters have no reason to live in a house surrounded by meshed scaffolding, and endure endless noise, dust, privacy, odour,.... problems.
Further, many shops and restaurants in Discovery Bay are closing down. I think the prices are not good 'value for money', and there are business problems during weekdays. You will feel very inconvenient living there.

Found an Amazing Mediterranean Restaurant The Rink All Day Lounge, the food was so delicious, I personally love the Shrimp Cocktail and Hummus, I also discovered that there is a chill place which is Pascucci where in you can have your coffee and have some desserts, while strolling around, I also found out about IL Bel Paese Gelato icecream, which my friends really did enjoy and their Express Resto, There is also an Italian Grocery store called European Touch where you can shop all the high quality goods. If you're also a wine collector you should drop by at Havana. Glad to have visited these places at Discovery Bay. I would surely recommend these places to my friends coming to Hongkong.

Discovery Bay is a resort town on the eastern end of Lantau Island that is connected to Tung Chung and other locations on the island by way of public bus as well as Central (HK Island) by way of regular ferry service.
This is a popular residential and weekend leisure spot in Hong Kong including a nice beach, park, golf course and several shopping mall venues with low-key retailers and plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops some with waterfront seating. The DB Plaza has an ice-rink and the beach includes a large children's playground area. There is a hotel called Auberge here as well. Also worth note, there are public buses that connect the DB North, Plaza and Deck shopping and dining venues.
It is similar to Stanley on the south of Hong Kong Island and a bit like the Sai Kung seaside village in the New Territories, a good place to spend 1/2 a day relaxing and enjoying seaside and beach life.
Note: A nice way to experience Discovery Bay is at the end of hikes from Mui Wo, another smaller and more casual seaside community on the southeast side of Lantau. There are two main hiking routes, both fairly interesting. The northern route which combines part of the Olympic Trail with the Lo Fu Tau Country Trail is more challenging but has better views of Discovery Bay as you approach. The various waterfront bars and restaurants are rather perfect after your long hike, a good opportunity to rest up before taking ferry back to Central.

We were looking for somewhere different to stay for a few weeks away from our 5-star apartment in Kowloon.
I have to say that I disliked the atmosphere from the second I left the ferry.
Instantly a mix of down-market Florida and the south of Spain came to mind.
The buildings around the ferry terminal were suffering from “tropical rot disease” and looked more than a little down at heel.
We took a bus ride up to the Auberge and all of the apartment blocks and houses seemed the same, just tired and stomach-sinkingly like a good idea gone very wrong. The golf carts on the roads made me think of a place from years ago in my memory and eventually I got the connection. The UK tv series “ The Prisoner”.
Absolutely to a tee.
We were both glad to be on the ferry and back to the reassuring reality of Kowloon.
Just something not at all right Discovery Bay.

From our visit, we’ve encountered a myriad of problems regarding the entertainment aspect of the place. There isn’t much room for shopping or leisure, instead the place is bombarded with empty restaurants. To improve, add more shopping outlets and a cinema for better customer service.

We visited after dropping off our luggage at the airport.. It is a short bus or taxi ride to get here so a handy place to spend final couple of hours of our trip..
It IS very pretty however it does not have the charm of 'real' places we visited.. It is all too perfect for the people, many ex-pats, who live there (who get around in golf buggies).. That said, we did have a lovely meal and stroll along the beach used by the, mostly Filipino, nannies on their day off..

Lived here in Discovery Bay for over 4 years having previously lived in Kennedy Town. Work in Central on HK Island. Very convenient to get to Central - the boats are frequent and throughout the day. Only about 1 hour door to door for me to get to work. Feels very relaxing here after a day in Central. Easy to get to airport with convenient bus services all day as well. Buses also take you around the area easily. Few good bars and restaurants. Basic shopping needs. And a nice beach. If you are visiting DB is not a bad place to base yourself but it's not really the HK you would be looking for I suspect.

Is Discovery Bay dog friendly? Are there areas that two labradors could be off lead? Could I travel in the golf buggies and buses with my dogs?

Discovery Bay is dog friendly, it's easy to get around. I don't know about the golf carts

Hi Everyone! My partner and I have stayed in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, for two of our last four holidays to Hong Kong. We always enjoy ourselves, love the DB lifestyle and how much calmer an atmosphere it is away from the noise and mayhem of the City centre. BUT! My problem for both DB stays have been insect bites to myself (mostly between my ankles and knees) on both legs! Has anyone an idea of what the culprit could be? I have noticed little black flies about in the Plaza area close to the tables? I did visit the chemist and they gave me something for the itch but sadly not much relief. So just asking in case someone has any idea, and then I can bring something to prevent it next time. Thanks...in anticipation.

Sadly there’s not much to do against the sandflies - by which you’re probably getting stung. From my experience the best thing to prevent mosquito and sandfly bites, is OFF spray. White flower cream gets rid of the itch after the fact very well too.

My mom is in a wheelchair and we plan to stay in discovery bay. We want to explore HK by the taking the ferry. Would it be possible? Are the ferry boats accessible by wheelchair?
