There are a handful of public beaches on the southern shores of Lantau Island including the Lower and Upper Cheung Sha Beaches. These provide a combined to form a 3km long stretch of beachfront and one of Hong Kong's cleanest and most beautiful beach scenes.
The beaches are both fairly narrow throughout, backed by lush trees and the tall Lantau Peak (934m) just behind. They are accessible by way of taxi and buses which run from Tung Chung and Mui Wo along the S. Lantau Road. There are expected facilities including changing stations, outdoor showers, public toilets, lifeguard stations (April to Oct) as well as a few holiday parks and basic accommodations as well.
At the eastern end of Lower Cheung Sha Beach, there are a few shops and beachside restaurants and bars as well as sports activity centre. Whereas the Upper Cheung Sha Beach is more of a long unbroken stretch of beachfront where you will find people swimming, jogging on the shorefront and often a few fisherman trying their luck.
Because the beaches are fairly remote, neither sees anywhere near the crowds that you find at other more easily accessible beaches in Hong Kong. Although they do see larger numbers than fellow Lantau beach called Tong Fuk further to the west.
Note: Unfortunately, public transportation is a bit limited in this area of Lantau Island so leaving can require a bit of patience especially on weekends and public holidays when the high use buses making their way back to Tung Chung and Mui Wo are often full up when they pass by. As such, be prepared to take a blue (Lantau) taxi if you don't want to wait for available bus ride.

Cheung Sha Beach on Lantau Island is an easy day trip. It’s a beautiful swimming beach, with a long expanse of golden sand, fringed by distant mountain peaks. A truly unique feature are the water buffalo. Unbothered by beach-goers and bright umbrellas, it's not unusual to see the water buffalo lumber past along the sand. It’s very scenic and a completely different side of Hong Kong.
A string of Western style restaurants and bars runs along the beachfront so you can easily spend a long, lazy day here. On weekends, if you are with a group, it’s best to book ahead as they are very popular. We recently ate at Lantana, a relaxing Italian restaurant, overlooking the beach.
There are public change rooms, showers, toilets and lifeguards and umbrellas, kayaks and other water sport activities can also be hired.
If you want a quieter beach experience, you can very easily walk around to Upper Cheung Sha Beach. A small headland divides the two beaches. Facing the ocean, head to your right, towards a traditional lookout pavilion perched on the headland and you’ll find a small track just behind the headland that leads to the other beach.
Getting There: It's a bit of a trek from Central but ferries leave frequently from Central Pier 6 to Mui Wo. From here, you can get a taxi or catch the Lantao bus (#1 #2 or #4). After about 20 mins, you get off at Lower Cheung Sha Village.

Cheung Sha beach on Lantau island is not the easiest to reach, as it is in part of Lantau for which you need a special permit to access by private car. So you either have find someone who has such a permit or take a 20 minute bus ride from Tung Chung MTR . Once there, you will find that is probably the prettiest and best beach in all of Hong Kong: clean sand, (relatively) clear water, good and clean shower and WC facilities, several coffee shops and restaurants with terraces. We spent a couple of hours there on a sunny and warm January day, and the place was almost empty. We took a long stroll along the beach and had lunch in a local restaurant - it was all very nice and relaxing.

...that I have so far visited. It may not be the simplest to reach from the city but it certainly is worth it! Clean soft sand; clear cool water; plenty of places to eat, drink and relax. It has it all!

Of course all beaches are for relaxing and to be layback in, but Cheung Sha is just one of the best to do that. Maybe because the space is more opened; the layback vibes from the outdoor restaurants on the edge of the beach where people enjoy beer, wine, food and the company of each other or maybe because it simply is just away from the city. Today we have a few local oxen as our company while we laid out on the beach. We brought our tent, we didn’t have swimming costumes, just lie there relaxing after a nice lunch at the French cafe at the corner of the beach (a new addition). Enjoying the simplicity of being in the sun, doing nothing.

20 minutes drive from the bridge this lovely little beach offers a great opportunity just to chill and relax. Very quiet and we were literally the only ones on it. Quite shallow and with shark nets it’s safe for a swim. Couple of small restaurants too although weren’t open when we got there.

This is a hidden gem in Hong Kong, away from the tourists, with just a couple of little restaurants. It is so beautiful here. Really peaceful. No-one knows about it and it's always chilled. Definitely try and find it if you visit Hong Kong - and keep an eye out for the cows ;)

Loved this beach. I was staying one night at the airport hotel in Hong Kong and I looked up places to go nearby and lo and behold there was one of Hong Kong's best beaches a short cab ride away. A great afternoon or early evening idea if you have time to kill at the airport, OR anytime you are in Hong Kong as it is a wonderful escape from the city.
I hopped in a light blue cab (the cabs are colour coded in Hong Kong and the blue ones do the Lantau island where the airport, beaches and disney are). We wound up into the mountains and then as we crested the top I saw the ocean come into view. Amazing views as we would our way down the mountain to the beach.
Here are some of the good and bad of this beach from my experience.
The Good:
- Quiet. I was there in the off season at Christmas, so no locals were on the beach and not many tourists at all. As a Canadians, 25 degrees was plenty warm enough for me to lay on the beach and enjoy the sun. I even went for a swim and the water was pretty warm!
- Nice and long. Loads of sand and a couple miles of walking. If the tide is out a bit, which it was during the beginning of my beach day there in the early aft, you can walk through and around this really nice section of boulders and keep walking along the long sandy beach. Once tide is in it's not really passable unless you swim.
- Even though the beach is a bit remote, it felt safe.
- There is a little fishing village at the end of the beach. Not touristy at all. Just filled with locals living there. I walked through with my camera and took some shots. Some of the shacks there are abandoned but many are still homes. I'm not sure I should have been walking through as some areas seemed less like sidewalks and more like backyards, but it was neat.
- A couple of beach bars. One being a local hangout for surfers.
- Washrooms by the beach.
The Bad:
- In the off season, at least, there isn't much open. Just two bars. The rest are shuttered. No chair rentals, umbrellas, etc. But that was just fine for me as I liked the authentic feel of it and the peace and quiet.
- As it is a working beach (fishing boats anchor out from the shore at points and there are some fishing nets) so just be careful what area you choose to swim in. The beach is so big you still have lots of areas to swim.
- Some garbage, quite minimal though, washed up on the beach.

After four summers in Hong Kong I've sought out many beaches as a way to beat the heat. Cheung Sha beach is my favorite so far because it balances pristine serenity (and large size of beach) with proximity to civilization.
My friends and I reserved kayaks that we took around for 3 hours, then hung out on the beach the rest of the day and ate a delicious lunch at Bathers.
The beach is surprisingly easy to get to considering its contrast from urban Hong Kong. It's only about about an hour from Central; we converged at Tung Chung Station then took a bus.
If you want a longer trip away from the city there are overnight lodging options on the beach.
My friends and I reserved kayaks that we took around for 3 hours, then hung out on the beach the rest of the day and ate a delicious lunch at Bathers.
