Incredible. 35 minutes on Fast Ferry from Central Pier 6 to Mui Wo, 10 minutes walk to check in. I wouldn't recommend this resort a year or two ago when it mainly catered budget tourists staying overnight. When I returned last month, surprised to find it was cleaned up and the facilities (especially the bar and restaurant) much improved, and at moderate prices. Here you can enjoy typical English breakfast, traditional Dim Sum lunch, and barbecue dinner overlooking at the not-so-quiet beach with buffaloes lying on the (silvermine) sandy bay.

Easy ferry ride directly from Central. I loved how quiet this place was, perfect to get some quiet time amongst nature. Before hitting the beach, we walked to Silvermine waterfall and cave. The signs weren't properly posted so we followed google maps. The waterfall is beautiful and worth the walk. We almost had the beach to ourselves and the water was perfect and cool againt the heat and humidity. We had refreshing drinks at the beach bar right across the beach. There are few eateries in town centre including McDonalds. We had some baked goods from the Village Bakery, very tasty. Overall a great day out.

Been here for over two years now and will keep returning. We hiked from
Discovery Bay to Mui Woo. MW is such a tranquil island and very relaxing.
Tak Chai Kee Restaurant faces the sea near the beach has the best Chinese food, great service and coldest beer. Love it here.

Point to note is ferry to central is every hour so good idea to check times while you eat.

Prices of restaurant is decent too.

Recommended !! For locals and tourists

Mui Wo on Lantau Island is a very easy day trip. Half an hour on the fast ferry from Central and you are there. We recently spent a day here which included a walk to the waterfall, lunch and a swim. Overall, Mui Wo doesn't have as much to offer as Lamma or Cheung Chau islands and if you have limited time in Hong Kong, then they are a better island experience. However Mui Wo has a nice local village feel and visiting couldn't be easier. The thing I found most charming was the way that the local water buffalo mooch lazily down the main street and alongside the promenade as if they own the place. It’s definitely a different side of Hong Kong.
SWIMMING - The main beach is only a few minutes from the ferry. The sand was clean, the water was clear and it had good facilities, including change-rooms, toilets, showers, lifeguards, some small shops and the Silvermine Beach Resort hotel.
HIKING - There are several options for hiking – Lantau Trail, the Pui O Beach Walk (9km) or the Olympic Trail, (5.6km path linking Tung Chung and Mui Wo). We were after something even shorter and sweeter so we walked up to the Silvermine Waterfall which took us past greenery, farms and natural bushland. The Silvermine Cave, an abandoned silver quarry, is close by also. Both are just a 20/30 min walk from the beach. The only caveat is that if there’s not been much rain in the months beforehand, then the waterfall might be quite dry.
EATING - We had an excellent Italian lunch at Capo alongside the river but there are a number of casual restaurants and places to eat.
GETTING THERE – Ferries leave regularly from Central Pier 6 but it is worth planning ahead to get the fast 30 min ferry. The slow one takes an hour. The China Bear is a very handy waterfront pub where you can have a drink while you wait for the ferry back to Central.

Wah Kee Seafood Restaurant, Mui Wo - We went for lunch in a group of 6 families and the owner started shouting at the small kids aged 5-6 years for apparently blocking the way. When the parents objected to her tone she swore at them and told them to F off! This was an outrage and we cancelled the remaining order and walked out. Overall the place was a real mess, smelly and substandard sanitary conditions. Highly over rated and above all run by an obscene woman who swears to her customers in front of kids.

Don't go here!

We reached Mui Wo by hiking from Tung Chung North. It was around 8 km hiking on Olympic Trail. Silvermine Cave & Mui Wo waterfall is on the hiking trail just before reaching one of the villages in Mui Wo. It is a small sea side town with several villages. Apart from locals, some resident foreigners are seen living in villages. Clean & quite beach with two or three motels/inns for tourists or visitors alike. Around ferry pier there are rows of simple but tasty seafood restaurants overlooking the sea, several bar & restaurant, western, turkish, nepalese & local ones, mcdonald, supermarkets, 7/11 convenience store. Ferry goes to Central ferry pier. Bus terminus just close by the ferry pier. Busses to Airport, Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O. This place is good to escape from urban bustling city in Hong Kong or Kowloon.

Mui Wo is where you can find the sleepy side of Hong Kong. This is one of those place you can escape the chaos and crowds of the city in this small leisurely seaside village on Lantau Island.

Here you can find a handful of western restaurants and bars, the Silvermine Bay Beach, one of several decent beaches on Lantau Island and some decent area hiking opportunities. There is a small waterfall in the area as well as an old silver mining cave that can be spotted on hikes around Mui Wo.

There is ferry service between Central (Pier 6) to Mui Wo provided by New World First Ferry (NWFF).

There is also bus service to Tung Chung, Ngong Ping and Tai O if you are interested in combining a visit to Mui Wo with any of these Lantau Island based attractions. Buses depart and arrive from right outside the Mui Wo Ferry Terminal.

It was Labour day so it was quite busy, I sat by some local women & enjoyed chatting with them during the ferry crossing. We got the ordinary ferry which took about an hour, it was a calm & very scenic journey. When we got off the ferry we turned right & walked through the market stalls, had beers, & strolled along the sea front watching the local fisher women. Finally we stopped for lunch & took in the wonderful sea views. I absolutely loved Mui Wo & was originally planning on staying there, how I wished that I hadn’t changed my mind as it was such a beautiful place.

Ok, I went there when there was an amber rain warning, so what did i expect, but to get wet - ha ha. The place is brilliant though, I had 8 hours to kill at the airport and having been to Hong Kong quite a few times, didnt want to do the usual kowloon, central thing. So, quick Lantau taxi from the airport for 200 dollars - £20 and then off to Mui Wo. Good food, although usual crazy Hong Kong prices - having just been to Taiwan, they really were crazy, but the food was good. After that, i had a wonder through the streets and on to the beach. Saturday afternoon is dragon boat racing day, so hang around till 1600ish and you will see all the dragon boats going. If you are feeling really adventurous, you can go and visit the bat caves and the old silver mine - thus the name of the beach Silvermine beach. I then took the fast ferry back which was very cheap and 40 minutes back to central. All in all a good afternoon out, even if it was a little wet!

Take the ferry from Central Pier 6 to experience a very different side to Hong Kong. Most visitors go directly from the ferry to the bus to The Big Buddha but I advise you to stay a while in Mui Wo. It is a relaxing, beautiful and peaceful place where you can forget the hassle of central and Kowloon.

Coming off the ferry turn right past the bikes and there is the cooked food market where you can get delicious Chinese seafood, or fish and chips, or pie and chips at Ks a new 'English' restaurant.
Continue walking towards the hotel, beach and barbecue area as you may want to just sit on the beach and enjoy the views. Try to avoid coming on a Sunday as the ferry and bus prices are double and it is very busy. Visit during the week as the beaches are empty.

If you turn left coming out of the ferry you can enjoy a beer at China Bear and relax and watch the boats and working junks. There is also a 7 -11 store and Wellcome and Park and Shop supermarkets if you need water or food to barbecue. As well as China Bear there is an excellent Turkish, authentic Tibetan/Nepalese and several wonderful Italian restaurants.

Mui Wo consists of 6 villages which are really interesting to explore on foot or by bike, which you can hire. If you enjoy hiking there are several hiking trails which start in or near Mui Wo. One really nice trail is the Olympic Trail. This walk takes you through some villages and up and over the hill passing Silvermine falls and cave to Pak Mong and Tung Chung New Town. It is well sign posted to Silvermine Cave and then follow the signs to Chep Lak and Tung Chung. It is a lovely hike on a paved path and the views as you climb out of Mui Wo are beautiful. If you have lots of energy and are fit you could hike Sunset Peak or walk over the headland to Discovery Bay.
