This is a typical indoor wet market and cooked food court located between Queen's Road Central and Bonham Strand in Sheung Wan. The ground and first floor is where you find a traditional food market open from 6am to 8pm daily while on the 2nd floor there is a cooked food area where you can purchase light meals and cheap eats. The Cooked Food area is open from early morning around 6am until after midnight.

The wet market floors are a common scene in Hong Kong. You'll find many venders dealing fresh seafood, poultry, pork and beef as well as numerous vegetable stalls. There are sundries, fresh flowers and a handful of small shops on the 1st floor as well. The scene can be quite photogenic when busy. Late morning can be a good time to see the market at its peak. By mid afternoon the shops start to close up.

The second floor is where you find the cooked food centre. There are a handful of small eateries from which you can order from. Tables are setup just like what you'd find at a mall food court. Meals are affordable and there is a fair range of Chinese, Vietnamese and other international foods on offer.

As a native Hong Konger living in Australia, I found it difficult to have a nice dinner every time that I visited there as most of the restaurants, cheap or expensive, are taking the mass production approach these days. The quality of food was just not there anymore. Luckily, my elder sister brought me to 楝記 (Tung Kee) which is at the second level of Sheung Wan Market. Don't expect a nice setting there - it's clean but not grand. My two favorite dishes - special pork knuckle and steam chicken (ginger sauce on the side). Vegetarian be reminded - keep away from this store!

The Shueng Wan Cooked Food Market was somewhere I thought I could quite happily have gone for any of my meals; breakfast, lunch or dinner. It was nearby my hotel, on the way to most public transports I was thinking of using, so it was a good inbetween place. However our experience there made us generally choose to eat elsewhere the majority of our holiday.

It isn't very fancy, just a bunch of chairs and tables surrounding several different eateries, all mostly with signs in Chinese, however you do find they have English menus at some of them, so don't let it put you off. There are signs around the place stating that the tables were there for anyone and did not belong to any one particular restaurant. Just walk around and you can see what each place is cooking and if it takes your fancy you can just let them know that you want it. Just point if necessary.

I only went there twice during my recent trip to Hong Kong, and I was lucky to go there the second time. My husband didn't like it there, and felt dubious about the quality of the food based on the way the whole area looked. He wasn't sure about how clean everything might be. We never experienced any problems though.

I went for breakfast at one place, ordered noodles and duck, it was pretty average and the serving of duck was a lot smaller than I had received in other places, and with very little flavour, so it wasn't something I chose to order the second time I went there.

I went for lunch the second time, at a different place in the room, and had a variety of small dishes which were tasty, but nothing to write home about. My husband was never happy with his meals but he ate them. It also took an age to get served at this second place, we nearly felt ignored, and then when we were waiting for the meals I had to go up and re-ask if they were actually being cooked as we had waited so long. The place we'd previously gone for breakfast was far more attentive and service was quick, so I guess we kind of assumed all of the places to choose from would be similar, but they aren't.

If you are on a budget this is a great place to go and get a meal, especially if you don't need anything too fancy, when you can't cook wherever it is you are staying. If you have a kitchen it would be better to visit the other floors and picking up your ingredients fresh and doing it yourself, if you have the time. Save up for a couple of fancy meals to break up the monotony.

I hope everyone else who eats here has a positive experience. I think we may have just eaten in such amazing places that it was a little difficult to get excited about the options available at the market.

You will be provided with a bowl of hot water to clean your bowls, plates and cutlery with.

Went off the track beaten by tourists to this place with my fiancée and her friends who live in Hong Kong. This is a food court of 15 or so restaurant outlets popular with a mix of locals and expats. Knowing I was in the audience, they chose curry for us. We had a few beers and starter/main curry which was excellent. Overall price for 4 was £50-60: great value and great food.

Only sour note was the toilet facilities: they are frankly ones to avoid. An issue for the building not the food outlets mind.

I think we were about the only tourists at that time (around 10 am). The ground floor has the meat and fish "shops". Many of the fish still live. Some meat shown are not for sale in other countries. We had a short conversation with some butchers, which was fun.

Local-style food court was amazing. We had more than we could eat for only HKD120 per person including beer. The place was packed with locals. The food was world class. Come here.

The municipal building houses the wet market, civic centre and cooked food centre. A gathering place for Sheung Wan. Best meals are served at dinner time.

I love indoor markets and this has to be the biggest and best I have seen in HK. It is over several floors each of which has its own speciality particularly fresh fish, fresh meat and flowers plus lots of homewares. There is a huge food court on the top floor which looks very interesting and all in Cantonese. I already had food but next time will try this place as I know it will be great. If you only get to one indoor market in HK make it this one.
