Top ways to experience Fa Yuen Street Market and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Mong Kok
It’s one of the highest density districts in the world, so come to Mong Kok prepared for action. Home to every market, restaurant and shopping arcade imaginable, Mong Kok is the one-stop shop to satisfy all your shopping needs. Dust off your finest negotiation skills and dive into the bartering frenzy. Similar retailers will conveniently congregate in the same area forming easy to remember references such as “flower street” and “sneakers street.” Here you will also find various local delicacies being served at street snack shops or hole-in-the-wall restaurants. One reliable rule of thumb: the smaller the place, the better the food.

An interesting walk through a bustling, colourful market made up of many different sections- I found the ‘wet market’ and goldfish market interesting but I don’t like seeing shops with puppies and kittens in crates. Different cultures have different expectations I guess.

The street market here is one place that I would try to go whenever I visited Hong Kong. It usually see a good crowd on weekend afternoons. You will see many stalls selling clothes, fruits, gadgets, bags, etc. Definitely worth a visit.

The Fa Yeun Street Market is one of two that you can visit along Fa Yuen Street in the Mongkok District. It is basically an outdoor bazaar, situated between Prince Edward West Road to the north and Mongkok Road to the south, similar to what you may have encountered at the Jardine's Crescent Market (Causeway Bay), the Wanchai (Cross & Tai Yuen Streets) Market and others around the city where you are more likely to find locals than tourists.

The Fa Yuen Street Market is busy all of the time, be it weekday or weekend. Locals come here to purchase fruits, vegetables and other food items, low cost clothing, shoes, accessories and household products. During holiday periods, you'll find stalls selling festival decorations and items, particularly around Chinese New Year. Unlike the nearby Ladies Market which is geared more for tourists and rather quiet these days due to pandemic related travel restrictions for entering Hong Kong, the Fa Yuen Street Market is still rather crowded and buzzing with activity.

The other market you can find along Fa Yuen Street is further south and is referred to as Sneaker Street. This is where you will find a cluster of shoe shops dealing in athletic, dress and casual footwear. This market is between Argyle Street to the north and Dundas Street to the south and is worth a visit as well if you plan to spend time in the Mongkok District checking out the various street markets and shopping centres.

Actually this is one of the best shopping streets in Hong Kong if you like quirky things. Loads of Korean and Chinese fashion shops with inexpensive but interesting fashion. Some outlets and a couple of secondhand shops among leather, jewellery and vegetable and fruit stalls. Take your time and go up and down every side of the streets. Many gems are hidden behind other stalls.

...to visit in Hong Kong, right next to the very popular (and amazing) flower market so it’s worth visiting both if you’re in the area. This particular street market has all the usual stuff to expect but it’s much less busy and manic than the similar markets in Mongkok.

Definitely suggest visitors to HOng Kong spend a fun 1-2 hours browsing Fa Yuen St, Market. It's big, clean and has plenty of interesting stuff, not just the tat that you get from most markets, but some really photogenic and interesting stuff. The odd food stall, fruit, nuts, tea or chocolate, I bought some beautiful candied mango for my sons, and it was far nicer than the packaged stuff you get in supermarkets. Yes, this is another market, but if you're looking for a fun day out, find your way here.
It is in close proximity to Gold Fish street, Tung Choi street, and the flower market street, and also the bird market. You can really make a great day of it here.
I really enjoyed the pretty polished stone jewellery, the golden chocolates, the gorgeous fruit,

Centred in MOngkok we found it easy to get to FA Yuen from the Cordis Hotel near Langham place, just a short walk.
Make sure you have very good walking shoes that are comfortable. Not a lot of places to sit or to rest.
There is a MacDonalds in the street nearby, in Tung Choi street, where we rested with a cup of coffee for a while,. Not a lot of western style cafes around here.

Its a long street, and worth looking both sides and also the shops behind the markets. Lots of fun. Opens around 11am.

More of a local market than a tourist one so no haggling needs to be done. Does not have any touristy gifts but cute and cheap pyjamas, kids clothes and bags. Bought reusable shopping/ grocery bags for gifts.

. . . But probably not worth taking time from an otherwise busy day to visit this junk-filled street market.
