We went on a Chinese tourist boat rather than one for non-Chinese. It was fabulous. The boat does NOT have first class. It makes different stops than the boat for non-Chinese Patrons. The views were extraordinary and our experience unparalleled.

The ship lift is a must - mesmerizing feat of engineering; I couldn't leave the deck even though it was raining buckets. Fascinating.

Took a tour down the Yangtze River, from Yichang to Chongqing. A wonderful trip through the magnificent Three Gorges landscape and through the history of China.

We had a lovely time, with beautiful accommodations, amazing service, interesting excursions and fantastic scenery. I would recommend this as a part of your visit to China. Also, Chongqing is worth a visit as you incorporate the cruise into an itinerary. We were on the Sanctuary Yangtze Explorer. It was excellent.

Amazing views. Well worth taking a cruise to see it all. Interesting that the water level has gone up so much.

We visited the Three Gorges area on a Viking Cruise down the Yangtze River. It was a wonderful trip. Mountain tops rose along the way and there were stately temples to see. There were breathtaking canyons with forests covering sheer cliffs. At one point we saw rhesus monkeys and occasionally saw small groups of goats. During the trip we took a side trip on the Goddess Stream tributary on a sampan. Towards the end of the trip we visited the Three Gorges Dam.This dam is over a mile wide and over 600 feet tall. It is the largest dam in the world.

The Three Gorges (Shennong, Wu and Qutang) are beautiful and very tranquil, although the water was sadly very polluted in places. It was worthwhile having a guide/commentary to point out interesting things like the hanging coffins and Goddess Peak. There are numerous cities and towns along the way and plenty of terraced river banks. The best way to experience the Three Gorges is via a cruise.

We did this both by a Yangtze River cruise and by going on a land tour with an English-speaking guide. The scenery is fantastic and we had a beautiful, clear few days to enjoy this part of China. The most difficult part of the trip was seeing trash floating in the Yangtze. As we left the Three Gorges, we saw the back of the 10 RMB bank note which is printed on it.

Even the rain could not dampen the expereince of seeing this amazing dam. The story of i's building and the millions displayed is a counterpoint to the benefit to the country.

The engineering of this dam is amazing. Typically there are attractive landscaped viewpoints to enable you to appreciate it fully. You will be told of all the benefits of its' construction and official literature will claim that there are still 200 Yangtze river dolphins in the wild. The WWF classifies it as extinct. The landscapes along this stretch of the river are stunning but rather marred by all the polystyrene floating down the river.
