Some stations have been around for ages, and others are new and added to meet the needs of this ever-expanding city. The key to minimizing travel time is to use a Beijing Metro Pass ( I have Metro passes for Beijing, Shenyang, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen) and know your subway route. I find it very useful to have the free MetroMan app. It tells me the travel time on alternate routes and at the current time.

GREAT for taking photos at night , looks more like a futuristic
sci - fi city !!
Oh the smog in the air over there , it's truly hard
for some caucasian / Americans to breath into this type
of Air polluted air because of all the cars roaming around
in the city's night life !!

The new lines are comfortable to ride, the Line 19 even has the same soft seats as high-speed trains. Some of the old station entrances have been rebuilt with escalators and elevators, which are very convenient.

The subway system in Beijing is cheap and pretty easy to use. You can pay digitally or use cash however the machines will not take large bills but there are attendants who can speak English to make change for you. You get a card to use for your trip and it goes back into the machine at the end of your trip.

Riding the subway is getting much better in Beijing. People are starting to stand to the right on the escalators and not directly in front of the doors blocking you from exiting.

The cars looked like no one ever uses the trains. This looked like straight out of factory. This can not be true. Have some hint of humans using the subway, not self cleaning robots!

The ventilation in subway is not the very best, compared to Hong Kong or Singapore MTR. The trains looked like not cleaned properly.

The Beijing subway is very easy to navigate with most signs in English. It is super fast, cheap and very clean. The best way to travel around Beijing for sure.

A modern transit system which is easy to use.
This is like any other mass subway system
It clean and airconditioned.
Beware that to enter the subway you ned to go through a metal detector and all bags are scanned - you just get used to it.
Another way to see Beijing.

When entering the metro for the first time you have one of two choices:
Get a single use ticket from the automatic kiosks you will see,

OR approach a person at a ticket window, give them some money and get a multi use metro card (this card also works on the buses)
Be sure to give them more than 20RMB because there is a 20rmb fee when you first get the card. There is no fee for reloads.
To reload the card simply hand a person at a ticket window your card with some money.

Through purchasing the card and reloading it I've never needed to use Chinese Hand them money they assume you want a new card, Hand them the money with a card they assume you want a reload.

All metro entrances will have a security check with an x-ray machine and metal detector. The kiosk or ticket window for your card could be before or after the security check just depends which one of the 100+ places you enter at.

Once you have your card simply scan it at the turn stall and you are good to go.

If you want to use it on a bus there will be a spot to scan it as you enter. Just look for where the locals scan theirs.
