The bell towers are quite incredible, and you get a good view of the city (on a good day at least). However, the steps going up to both of the sites are very steep, so you should be aware of this. There is no lift going up.

This is a marvellous edifice that formerly guarded the southern entrance into the city. It is directly on the city's important and famous south to north axis line that extends as far north as the Olympic village. It has a fabulous design and it looks wonderful at any time, including when lit up after dark.

This is one of the oldest Beijing gates which is now a museum of old Beijing and two stories of arts gallery/exhibition. This building gives the visitor the opportunity to have a panoramic view of Tiananmen Square and the surroundings.

Also called Zhengyang Men it hosts a museum of history about Beijing. It consists of two towers, Jian Lou and Zhengyang Men on the southern edge of the Tian’an Men Square. Both towers are impressive. Zhengyang Men separated the Imperial City, the Forbidden City from the Chinese City. The museum has a rich collection of Beijing during the ancient days.... More

The name literary translates to Front Gate. It use to be the gate to the inner city, now the walls have been destroyed and only the imposing gate remains. I would call it the entry to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Frankly after seeing this structure all the others (Forbidden City) felt pretty much the same. We only saw... More

Zhengyangmen and Jianlou Zhengyangmen also called Qianmen (spoken as Chiaenmen) literally "gate of the zenith Sun", was a gate in the ancient wall around the city of Beijing. The wall was later demolished but the gate was kept intact formally naming it as Lizhengmen meaning "beautiful gateway". It is situated in the extreme south of Tiananmen Square. This magnificent building... More

It's directly accessible from exit A of the Qianmen metro station on line 2. The museum occupies 2 floors and can be quickly view in less than an hour. There's a description of it's role and the defenses. It is one of Beijing's few preserved city gates. There are 2 more floors above the museum, but these are dedicated to... More

Poignant history is located in this square. Not just in the preservation of the architecture, but in the memory of the students who so bravely stood there. It was really the only place I felt oppressed by communism in China as the presence of soldiers and police is so great. In behind the square is a preserved market. Part of... More

Qianmen literally means front door in Chinese. It is nothing much just a building structure but whatever lies behind Qianmen is more shopping and eating. There are many high end shops here and also a small lane that is like a market that sells souvenirs and little trinkets. There are loads of shops selling Chinese snacks that you can get... More
