An enjoyable walk down from Novotel Beijing Peace. If you turn left in the opposite direction of Wangfujing Street, it's good to get away from the expensive shops etc and see Hutongs all along Dongsi South Street. There is a mosque at no 13 and the famous Donglaishun restaurant opposite. Its quiet and walking through the Hutongs gives you a sense of how people live. Highly recommend and take it in!! Dongsi Metro and Dengshikou accessible.

Very interesting historic part of Beijing with small roads and occasional restaurants or even hotels. Since the roads are very small and packed with parked cars they are mostly one ways. If you take a look through an open main gate so can see plenty of small houses/apartments.

This is a small part of beijung where the history is still alive. Small houses and shops which are safed from the past. Beside the temle and the lake there are lot of restaurnants and bars and it can become crowded on a sunny weekend.

A place to come and understand Hutong culture and history. It's better to have a tour guide so that you can fully appreciate and enjoy

It would be nice to take off at Zhangzizhong metro station to Dongsi hutong. The atmosphere is quiet and nice there though the weather was pretty cold (-10 degree and windy) on the day when I visited it.

Hutong Area - Hutong is a Mongolian word meaning water well. It is the name given to a lane or small street that originated during the Yuan Dynasty. Visitors are generally transported from a point on the edge of the Hutong by a cycle rickshaw through the narrow streets to a point where they then walk to explore the area. It is interesting in that the houses are close together with narrow streets. It does have a an air of modernisation and on visiting one house a number of families share courtyards and have little living space. The house we visited focused on the owner, an artists, who led us to his studio for a sales pitch. What could be an interesting look into history was focused on tourism.

We are not sure which Hutong tour we took, but take a tour before you leave Beijing. The tour is well worth the minimal charge and it’s eye-opening to see the living standards pre economic boom. You travel through narrow back alleyways. All you see are walls and doors, shops and some restaurants. You see communal bathrooms since almost all the homes lack bathrooms. You learn what the markings on door posts mean. We arrive at an innocuous door and enter. Inside it’s clean. Its home to a lovely women and small family. The daughter is a recognized artist who paints snuff bottles. She shows us how it’s done. We continue the tour and reach our starting point. Great time spent in a Hutong.

We had a rickshaw tour of Dongsi Hutong. Narrow streets with houses behind blank walls. Enter and see a courtyard surrounded by small buildings. Community latrines every few hundred yards as houses don't have facilities. Lots of small shops. You see how people traditionally lived.

I cycled around the Hutongs and found it fascinating the array of diversity and culture when you get off the main streets, lots of food, souvenir shops and everyday living.

We took a tour of a hutong and loved it. The narrow alleys, the old dwellings, this is old Beijing that is fast disappearing. This is how they used to live before condos and big buildings. We went to a family operated restaurant, walked through the alleys and came upon a senior cititzen center, where a men's choir was singing. It was beautiful and brought tears to our eyes. Learned much about the meanings of doorways and posts. it was all fascinating.
