Wudaokou is the area near Tsinghua, Peking and Beijing Language and Culture Universities in the Haidian District. It has a few western style restaurants and many, many Chinese restaurants and retail stores. The shopping and restaurants are conveniently located near the subway station. If you are at one of the aforementioned universities, this is the place to eat, drink or shop.

The area is very developed and caters to the young, university crowd. Consequently, this is not a good area to visit if you are looking for the "authentic" Chinese experience. I would suggest Dazhalan, near the Forbidden City, to get that historical China feeling. Wudaokao station and the surrounding is very busy at night, especially during the school year. Getting on or off the subway during evening rush hour can be difficult.

If you are looking for the Western bar scene, Sanlitun has more variety (and foreigners). Personally, I like Wudaokou better that Sanlitun because it is not as westernized. If you are looking for Western food and alcohol, there is a row of western style bars near the southeast exit of the station. I like "The Steps" bar as the prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly. "Lush" is a very popular restaurant/bar nearby.

A vibrant place, full of multinational people. You can enjoy great international food for all budgets, shop in many different locations and enjoy a glimpse of night life as well, all in one place!

This is known as the college area and I work nearby. There are many foreigners here and western style restaurants. Half of them aren’t bad. Half are restaurants by day and clubs at night. The club scene is not extensive but it can get crowded. Walking around is safe but walking across the street is dangerous simply because of the traffic. The drivers here have no sense and are impatient and don’t value lives so please be careful especially with younger kids.

I love love love the WU! As a former student at beijing yu yan da xue a lot of students would go out to the bars and do what students do best, get drunk. The great thing about Wudaokou is that they hand out bracelets that pretty much say " I'm drunk take me to wudaokuo," in chinese. Now I know it seems silly but when college students get drunk there chinese gets a bit sloppy and no one can understand you. Not only that If you get drunk and lost its like being in one of those horror movies. With these bracelets if you loose your way or phone just show a taxi driver your wrist and he will take you back to the main part of the WU! :) This bracelet has saved me more than once.

Near here is Bei da and Tsing Hua and so it's natural that all the college students hang out.

If you come here to study Chinese you'll definitely come across this place. If you're here visiting then you can probably skip this place since it will hold nothing of value for a tourist.

Most notable things here are the club Propaganda, different types of restaurants mainly korean and Japanese.

Nice hang out place for young people.

Summary-

Come here if you are learning Chinese

I love Wudaokou! There are lots of restaurants and shops, and it's always lively. The bar street is a great cheaper alternative to Sanlitun. It's quite foreigner friendly too, due to the amount of foreign students in the area.

A good place for meetings if you're in tech, R&D etc. It's a calm but spread out place. The Liaoning hotel is nearby, which is nice and the staff are very helpful.

This is an area frequented by the many students (mostly foreign) who attend the many universities in the area (including the two biggest in Beijing, Peking and Tsinghua). I used to come eat around here quite often when I was a student in Beijing.

Some decent places include the Korean bar which shows many football games live and a couple other restaurants.

As a tourist, not worth venturing out here as there are better places to explore. As a foreign student, its likely you'll practically live here.

This is a great place to go out. There are many cheap bars und a lot of clubs. It is very busy. 100RMB entry fee for men (50RMB drink voucher) and free entry for women in the clubs.
We had fun.
