Took the 1 day 3 stop (forbidden, summer, heaven) tour which cost only $28 for a 8 hour bus tour that included admissions, bus, guide, and fine lunch. I can not figure how they make money? Only 10 people in the comfortable van and a fine english speaking, very informed guide? Viator charges $81 for a similar product - I will keep the $50 for myself.

I took the hutong tour: http://www.beijinglocaltour.com/hutong.php
I meet with the guide, Gina, a really nice guide with good English.
The tour included a walk through the Hutongs (traditional neighborhoods of Beijing), Drum and bell tower, a temple, the Opium street, a traditional family courtyard and Rickshaw ride. No shopping stops.
Totally recommend

I was a little hesitant booking tours in Beijing, ever alert to the many scams that operate. I found this company very good. Easy and quick responses to emails, good instructions for the trips and easy phone contact with good English. I booked for one trip to the great wall and ended up booking a number of other trips with them. There prices are also very reasonable. Consider this provider when in Beijing.

I came across this company online, www.BeijingLocalTour.com, while researching for local tour options in Beijing. I have emailed them to join a 2-day small group tour with airport pickup. Wendy was the agent who was very prompt in replying to all my questions. The tour package I booked was below:
Tour charge: US$90 (RMB560)/person
Total charge: US$180 (RMB1120) for 2 persons
Service package includes:
1. Pick-up and drop-off from hotel in downtown Beijing.
2. Air-conditioned tour coach.
3. Entrance tickets.
4. English Speaking tour guide.
5. Typical Chinese lunch.
6. Airport transfer service with driver only.
Price Excluding:
1. Fee of cable car;
2. Tips to the guide and driver
Two souvenir shops will be visited on each tour day about 45 minutes each.
We have to prepay US$40(RMB240) as deposit for the airport pickup and the payment was made thru PayPal. The balance was paid to the driver in cash after we were picking up at the airport.
Unfortunately, for the preparation of military parade on 3rd September, Tiananmen Square & Forbidden City were closed from 22nd August to 3rd September. Wendy has informed us of this change well in advance and she has asked us if we would accept the change from Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City to Jingshan Park. This arrangement is out of their control and was fine with us.
Justin was our tour guide for first day & Patrick was the one on the 2nd day. We were contacted the night before by the guides for the pickup time for the morning. They were both fluent in English and were very friendly.
The visits to the souvenir shops included the jade factory, tea house, pearl factory & the Chinese medicine shop. There was no pressure on us to buy anything from these shops. However, we didn't purchase some packages of tea leaves from Dr. Tea. They did try to convince us to buy more but we refused. Unfortnately, I just tried the tea that I have purchased, it didn't taste the same as we had in the tasting room. I wonder if they didn't give us the same quality of tea leaves as we have tasted.
Overall, we were very pleased with the tour & the arrangement.

I came across this company online while searching for cheap tour packages in Beijing. I decided to email them to join a 3 days group tour (Group tours are way cheaper than their private tours and since I initially planned to go on this trip alone, having others with me from different cultures is an adventure -- I made instant friends after each tour!). Wendy was very accommodating and she replies quickly whenever I emailed her. She also gave me a discount when I booked the 3-Day Tour with them.

Day1: : Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven & Summer Palace Bus Tour - US$28(RMB180)/person
Day2: Hutong, Lama Temple, Panda Zoo, Jingshan Park and exterior view of Olympic Stadiums Bus Tour - US$29(RMB180)/person
Day3: Mutianyu Great Wall, Ming Tomb (Dingling) Bus Tour - US$29(RMB180)/person
Service package includes:
1. Pick-up and drop-off from hotel in downtown Beijing.
2. Air-conditioned tour coach.
3. Entrance tickets.
4. English Speaking tour guide.
5. Typical Chinese lunch.
Price Excluding:

2. Tips to the guide and driver
3. RMB20/cart to the rickshaw driver and tour guide in cash.
Two souvenir shops will be visited on each tour day about 45 minutes each.

I paid the full amount of 502 RMB (for the 3 days tour) at the end of the 1st day. Before the day of your tour, the tour guide will call you and let you know what time you'll be picked up in your hotel and a separate email/text will also inform you about the details of your tour the next day.
Our tour guide for the 1st day is Yoyo. She's too cute and very friendly. She helped us to find our way to the well-known roasted peking duck in Wafungjing after the tour. We also asked her to write in Chinese some of the shops that we want to go to after the trip so we can show it to the taxi drivers.
The tour guide for the 2nd and 3rd day is Justin. He also speaks good English and made us laugh all the time. He even offers to take our photo (solo and group). He's very patient and very informative.
Overall, I am very satisfied with their service. The traditional chinese lunch included in the package were also very good. Though we stopped in the Jade Factory and Tea Houses, we are never forced to buy.

BEIJING March 2015
I visited Beijing for the first time and wanted to go to Great Wall (Mutianyu Great Wall). I heard many stories about day tours, "forced visits to jade, tea, medical halls etc" and being ripped off etc.
I found this BeijingLocalTour.com (online ) for reservation email them. No much information about this company so I decide to share my experience with those keen. I am satisfied with this tour and value for money.
First consider the price person. NO shopping day tour in Beijing is usually double the price.
I decided to take up this company and join the RMB180 day tour with 2 shopping visits.
The tour guide Peter give a decent schedule stops at each station. Peter is informative and approachable.
2hrs at the Mutianyu Great wall after lunch. For those looking to seriously spend 3 to 4 hrs this is not the tour for you.
First the visit to the Jade factory. Yes you need go thru the motion looking at the prized jade. However no need to buy it . If any sales staff approached you just walked away or if you really keen on getting a jade ask for more. For me I just spend extra RMB25 for a cup of coffee at a corner untill the guide ask us to leave. less than 45mins .
Last stop the Tea shop, the demonstration is done in a lock room with about 10 of us. No obligation to buy but you do feel pressured to buy. Please Dont reply dumb answers or excuses like "I'm not a tea person, not buying tea to keep". I do buy a set at RMB600 and I tasted it back in my hotel. The tea is of a decent grade slighly cheaper than retail shops if you ask the staff for a group discount.
YES the lunch is fantastic and really make the trip worth.
Mutianyu Great Wall, Underground Palace (Dingling) Bus Tour
Tour charge: US$29 (RMB180)/person
Total charge: US$58 (RMB360) / person (NO Shopping & NO Underground tomb visit)
Service package includes:
1. Pick-up and drop-off from hotel in downtown Beijing.
2. Air-conditioned tour coach.
3. Entrance tickets.
4. English Speaking tour guide.
5. Typical Chinese lunch.
Price Excluding:
1. Fee of cable car;
2. Fee of shuttle bus RMB15/person at Mutianyu;
3. Tips to the guide and driver
Tips: Two souvenir shops will be visited on each tour day about 45 minutes each.
The tour guide will pick you up from your hotel around 07:00am,

BEFORE agreeing or confirming acceptance of a tour package in Beijing, please do take the time to check with your local travel agent on the itinerary of the tour. Some of the ground tour in Beijing consists of mandatory visits to factory shops/outlets. There you will be persuade into buying commodities such as silk, jade, jewelry and tea....so called at a good price since those are government's owned factories. At one of the outlet, there is a minimal time frame where visitors are not allowed to leave too early otherwise a penalty charge of Y100 will be imposed. Here is something you should know, the local tour guide and driver are mostly freelance who works for 4 -5 local travel agents, they earns commission on every purchase made by the tourist who they brought to the factory outlet. This sort of tour is ok for those who actually want to go spend money rather than those who expects a 100% R&R vacation.
Its not entirely a con, 50% of the itinerary still includes visits to historical sites such as the Summer Palace, acrobatic show, Forbidden City, ski playground, Great wall of China and shopping markets. Since these attractions does not generate extra income to the local tour guide/agent the time for these visits shall be quite short....to squeeze time for those other tour destination with the Kachingggg sound.
I felt my last trip was not so bad, just wish we spent more time in the attraction which we prefer rather than those factory outlets.....wasted a lot of time traveling on the road and listening to briefing at each factory outlet.
The local tour guide/agent understanding is the the tourist with his/her wallet has social obligation to help them earn more income.

As a teacher in Beijing, I have been fortunate to find local tour guide Peter Zhao who was recommended by colleagues at the school. When my daughter, her husband and their two teenagers came to visit, Peter took me to pick them up at the airport in his mini-van and over the next five days, he took us to see all the magnificent sites of Beijing, the Great Wall, The Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs, The Forbidden City and The Temple of Heaven. Peter’s local knowledge, leisurely pace and good humour ensured we were able to relax and enjoy the time together. I subsequently booked him again when friends came to Beijing and this time we saw the local clothing markets at Beijing Zoo, and the Five Gold Star Markets where the prices are a fraction of the main tourist markets and its possible to find a real bargain. For the sheer convenience, and at the very reasonable rate 600RMB Peter is hard to beat, actually better value than joining an organized tour. You can contact him iampeter518@foxmail.com. He responds same day, and is totally reliable and always careful about confirming arrangements.

be weary when u take on the tour!! the tour guide will bring u to the so-called souvenirs shops like jade and silk factories, tea house but the prices are a ripped off and they will show u a black face if u do not get anything. i was at Dr Tea house on 2 occassions coz of the different day tours. the staff will locked u inside a room on the pretext of sampling tea and we were being pressurised to purchase coz they wont let u out unless u purchase things! i was also being chided for helping an old couple to ask for freebies as i could speak mandarin. the tour guide for my 2nd day tour even argue with me that it is impossible for me to visit the same tea house in a row. He shut his mouth after i showed him the itinerary. the same lady staff whom i saw on the 2nd day and happened to be the same lady do the tea sampling was black face when she saw me coz she knew i didnt buy anything. she also gossip with her colleagues about what happen. we spent more time at these so call souvenirs shops than at the scenic locations:-(
Although it was stated in the itinerary that we would be given X mins at each location, it was never true. we were often being rushed so that the tour can end early and the tour guide can knock off early or bring those interested to catch the peking opera or acrobatic shows.
i will not recommend to take the day tours from beijing local tour (www.beijinglocaltour.com). i reckon all day tours from other day tour companies to be the same. just exercise your own judgement if u intend to buy things from them afterall willing parties from both side..
