This tower is easily noticeable along the Beijing city skyline, due to its unique (and some say "radical") architecture, which resembles a pair of boxer shorts. For this reason, the tower is popularly known among the locals as "Boxer Shorts".
Some important tips for those who wish to take photographs of this unique structure:
- As the tower is relatively tall, do not stand too near the tower to snap your photos. Go somewhere further away (and one that is without obstructions) in order to get the best angle.
- Snap your photos of the tower during the day, as it is only mildly illuminated at night and therefore has nothing much to offer for photo-buffs.

This is obviously a great place to gain a high up view of Beijing. It’s not central though so the view is t quite as amazing as hoped.
To be honest the highlight for me was seeing the tower lit up at night. Very photogenic

We had a great view of this beautiful building from our hotel room. It’s truly incredible architecture, pity they don’t give tours.

Firstly there are 2 CCTV buildings in Beijing confused here in some if the reviews and pictures
The central CCTV tower was built in 1987-94
It is way out in west Beijing and is a tall tower a bit like the Shanghai tower with a revolving restaurant and a viewing deck
(The new CCTV building was built 2002 -09 known as the big underpants is an arched shaped building in the CBD; i am nit sure whether you ate allowed to visit this )
I booked in advance as part of a modern Beijing tour
By chance it was the first time O had seen Beijing smog free with quite high winds
For me this one one of the highlights of my city tour
No one hardly goes there bit when its clear the views are fab
You can see downtown; forbidden city, birds nest , mountains and get a real feel for the city

I went to the CCTV Tower on an AQI~50 day at 3pm. I could see the mountains to the west and CBD to the east. The low-lying Forbidden City was perceptible, as were the distant Olympic Park buildings to the north. The finite amount of pollution veiled distant objects, even on a blue sky day. The best take away from the experience was to get a sense for the enormity and layout of the city. The shear number of buildings is remarkable. I would not recommend this place on any conditions with AQI>60.

There is a rotating section at the restaurant. So you can sit and look all around Beijing while you enjoy your meal. The price is reasonable and the buffet food offer everything to everybody. There was even surprisingly good French fries. All soft drinks are included in the buffet, also the beer. In our opinion it was however exactly worth its price. Nothing. But the wine - at extra price was good. The service was better than usually in China, some of the personnel understood some English and major credit cards were accepted. During our isit the weather and the visibility was good. We really enjoyed the sights in a nice environment with decent food and service. Definitively worth the money spent.

The Tower is by no means a bucket list or top thing to do in China. It might not even be a must do, but if you have nothing else to do and want to visit a Beijing attraction, it might be worth your while. However, if the pollution level is at or above 200, you might as well forget about trying to go because you won’t be able to see anything. There is a fake production set of the CCTV news and you can pretend to be an announcer. There is an expensive restaurant at the top but we didn’t check it out. My wife didn’t enjoy it very much and I thought it was ok but it wasn’t anything to write home about.
