When I was there in end Sep, it was not open to the public. I am not sure if it is due to the tight security with the impending 70th anniversary celebration on 1 Oct. As such, I could only take photos of the exterior building.

Impressive, socialist type of building. Huge space, huge assembly room, huge corridors. If you are visiting Tiananmen Square and you have time, definitely visit, Ticket office is on the south side, a big screen will show the rules and the opening time (from 8.15), closing varies.Self tour, no guide is provided, you buy the ticket (30 Y) and go.

This large government building sits just to the west of Tiananmen Square. It's impressive looking and is where the whole Chines council meets. You can't get in so just enjoy the view from the square.

Tiananmen Square is surrounded by Chinese Government Buildings. This building is the meeting place for the full sessions of the Chinese parliament, the National People's Congress (NPC).

The east entrance was closed when I went here and I thought it wasn't possible to enter the building. When I walked to the other side to the west entrance it turned out to be open.

The interior is beautifully decorated and almost looks like a palace. A lot of halls are sectioned off so you can only partially see them.

Definetely worth going inside.

This building is fairly large and full of stately rooms. If you only have a short time in Beijing I’d skip it but if you’re in Tiananmen Square and have time to spare it is quite an interesting site to see. It also had free water inside, love,y western style toilets and was a lovely place for an air conned sit down.

Located just near Tain'anmen Square, this imposing building is worth a quick stop to view from the exterior. There is nothing outstanding about the design, but what makes it impressive is the general feel of power and dominance where it is set among other buildings surrounding the Square.

The Great Hall of the People is another structure on the western edge of Tian'anmen Square that is used for legislative and ceremonial activities as well as for meetings of parliament. The sheer size of the building is pretty impressive. The building is across the square from the National Museum. We were not able to go through the building during our visit to the area, but if you are able to you must leave your bags and cameras in lockers outside the building. Although I would not go out of my way to view this structure, It was interesting to see the contrasting architecture of this more modern building adjacent to the more traditional gates on either end of the square.
