It was boring and terrible. It might have been a good show for 5 year old children, but definitely not for adults. Our guide sold us the show as great but it has a cheesy and dull storyline, shabby lightshow and water works. The actors performance was very poor. A waste of money and time.

It was an optional add on to our tour so we opted in. Costumes were nice as were the sets. The acrobats, some excellent others okay. Some of our group thoroughly enjoyed the show. If you don't want to sit through the performance there is a coffee house you could make use of right on the premises. I would sit and have coffee rather than pay to see the show if I knew then what I know now.

Well, if like us you expected a typical Chinese music and dance performance you're going to be disappointed.
It is more like a Las Vegas expensive super show with plenty of dancers and actors, spectacular special effects (a flood on stage, yes, not less), loud and impressive music ...
Actually a 21st Century show, probably tailor made for us, tourists, impression which was confirmed by the composition of the audience during our show.
So it was not really anything close to something really representative of the Chinese historical culture as we imagined and hoped for ...
Anyway, according to the rating of this show here on Tripadvisor and the other reviews it seems that it you'll probably like it.
So I have attached plenty of pictures so you can see for yourself what I mean and let you decide whether to go see it without being too much influenced by my review.
By the way the show in itself is rather short, 1 hour and since it is not cheap one might have expected getting a better value for his money.
Bottom line, since I don't know if it still is possible to see authentic traditional performances as I had wished, and also if you can get cheap tickets, may be you can give it a try...

I agree with others who rated this show overpriced and boring.
Technically - it is excellent. eg. costumes, lighting, props, stage presentation.
But storyline is limp, no dialogue, no singing, no music.
Not spectacular.
If given a choice, would have chosen something else.
But going with a tour group, we had no choice.
Building is clean and modern, tho.

I'm astonished at the raving reviews so far below...I too have gone to broadway shows and vegas shows even. I originally rated this show average but I did feel a little ripped off of the $50CAD I paid. The story is really really boring, no singing nor a word is spoken and no live music. At about the halfway mark, honestly, I looked around and people surrounding me were half asleep or having a conversation amongst themselves. In the full one hour, I'd say I was entertained for about 10 minutes. I'm not being picky, I just feel this show is overpriced for the quality of the entertainment.
*A side note, as I was with a tour group and noticed the entire place filled with tour groups, travellers travelling with a chinese based tour group be aware that you will be brought to this show and you'll be under the impression that this is free or included. Not at all. At the end of your tour, you'll be asked to pay for this crumby show from your tour guide at $50US/CAD a pop. Not cool. I'm not shy of naming names - the tour group I went with and was ripped off was Amber Holiday.

If you have a holiday in Beijing you most definitely HAVE TO see THe Golden Mask Dynasty show. Please believe me when I say it was wonderful, we decided to go on our last day of our trip and we were blown away by this beautiful theatrical extraviganza !!!! The story is a simple love story but each scene is an explosion of colour and beauty and typical Chinese dance and acrobatics at its very best. The music is beautiful and you will not have a problem understanding the story, there are a few amazing scenes but the flood scene is unbelievable, WOW IT IS. AMAZING !!! Lots of love from Patrick. And. Zoe. xxxx Oh I must mention, try to get a centre seat, you will get the best view !!!

The show was very entertaining and good value for money as we managed to get the cheapest 120 yuan tickets. Our seats were located just one behind the vip-seats and there's definitely no excuses for the 600 yuan vip-tickets, so take the cheapest you get. The show was good with a great variety of different costumes and styles, although definitely not ready: the dancers didn't manage to perform the movements at the same time etc., and the theatre is pretty far from everything and you should take a bus from downtown - not even subway. But for 120 yuan and even more, entertaining!

Having seen stage shows around the world the Golden Mask Dynasty show is the one show not to be missed in Beijing even better than the acrobatics shows. It included, a cast of 200, the costumes, scenery, lighting and special effects. There was dancing, acrobatics, fighting, They used not just the main stage but both sides of the large theatre. One scene was a cascading waterfall that started at the top of the stage and went into the ground and all the sides of the theatre were in a full waterfall were actors had hang on with a rope of keep on the stage. Really Spectacular. I am surprised that this is not listed more on trip advisor as the No 1 show to see.
No photography of any kind. They had attendants with laser beams to block you taking any part of the show. You can purchase a CD at the end of the show. Well worth it.

My first trip to China since living there 15 years ago and our tour guide really sold us on this show. I had no intention on going (I find Beijing Opera painful to listen to so assumed it would not entertain me), but my tour guide (who I now know gets a kickback on selling tickets) told us how great it was. We got front row seat, how amazing is that? It was awful. The story wasn't completely clear, occasionally there was a translation of the story, but they would give like 1 sentence in English. Even without the story, the dancers were robotic. Peacocks on a head are kind of cute, but cannot carry a show. Other than that, there was a good 2 minutes with trampoline work that was entertaining. Literally people were laughing at how bad it was. when the audience clapped, it was a pity clap. When asking how my tour liked it, basically, if you know nothing about plays and musicals - you may find it interesting that they have water in the theater and think it is ok. If you have been to quality plays and musicals, you likely will think it is a joke. Either way, there are better ways to spend those few hours (and your money).

Juat 1 scene of waterfall on stage is decent rest is dull and boring.
Explore the city instead. I would have rather gone to the Beijing zoo and seen Pandas instead of this show.

Is this play in Chinese or English or unspoken but still understood?
Written 27 July 2019
There is no dialogue only music. There are large screens each side of the stage that give a short description of some segments of the show and they are in English as well as a few other languages. You won’t be disappointed it is an incredible show.

I forgot to say......as an animal rights activist I don't like the scene with the live peacocks on the women's heads.
Written 6 April 2019
The reviewer who calls himself The One Dog told me to "Give it a rest"!!! I beg your pardon!!!
This might not be the worst case of animal abuse, but how frightened do you think Peacocks are on top of a dancer's head in bright lights??? And just how do you think that the Peacocks are kept from moving on top of the women's heads? They must be strapped in. Sounds comfortable. (Not!)
You claim to know what PETA stands for, yet you are not even quoting them accurately.
The PETA motto is "Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, ***use for entertainment*** or abuse in any other way."
If you search peacocks on PETA's website you will see how easily they die when manhandled.

We are trying to buy 2 tickets to this show and have contacted Theatre Beijing. They can give us a section number but not a specific seat or row. Is this normal? We want to sit together. I believe they are resellers. Any comments on buying these tickets? Thanks.
Written 11 March 2018
This is very normal in Beijing, you will be seated together of course. Just come in time to get good seats in your section. Enjoy!
