Not easily accessible by metro. Probably a 20 - 25 minute walk from any metro station. Honestly, my focus was only on the tower that I don't remember any other features of the site. It's a Buddhist temple and worshipers are seen praying and burning incense. However, no monks. A few English signs with brief details are found on building... More

The tower was at first built around 600 AD (Sui Dynasty) to house the precious and sacred relics of Buddha. In 1120 AD (Liao Dynasty) it was rebuilt and transformed into a brick tower. As the oldest above-ground building in the City of Beijing, it's of great significance for scholars in architecture and archeology, for it not only demonstrates how... More

I discovered this pagoda while walking around looking for something else, but it was quite difficult to get to (just because I was walking through the back streets trying to get near its location). The history of the beautiful edifice is palpable, and the great thing is that this is not a tourist haunt; the people here seemed to be... More

Tianning Si is located just outside the south-west 2nd ring road - very easy to get to by cab and can also be reached by public transport, e.g. subway line 2 to Changchunjie and bus 673 for one stop plus a 10min walk south, though this is more involved. The temple only used to open at full-moon but is now... More
