胡同は北京の特有の路地や横丁のことを意味します。大都市の北京には無数の胡同があり、とくに故宮の周囲にはたくさんあります。元、明、清といった時代につくられたようです。胡同の中心には貴族階級が住み、少し離れたところに商人や庶民の街だったようです。いまでもその雰囲気が残っています。
