This area is popular among the locals and tourists, especially along the Yandai Xie Street 烟袋斜街 and the surrounding hutongs. As such, there are many shops in this touristy street - food, snacks, handicrafts, souvenirs etc. Many people loved to congregate at the Yinding Bridge 银锭桥. You can take a rickshaw ride in the hutong area or a boat ride in Houhai Lake 后海. Suggest you visit the Bell and Drum Towers if you are here.

This is an area with two lakes, many bars, restaurants and stores in a hutong style quarter with very nice streets. It is close to the drum and bell towers, so you can combine the visit.
You can eat in seated restaurants or just buy street food.
You can also rent a boat to ride over the lakes.
As said, very nice views and surroundings.

Scenic hutong area of Beijing. This area was included as part of a tour which included dinner at a local family house (lovely) and a rickshaw ride around the lake (fun and scenic). A beautiful area to explore ‘old China’. Some great market areas. Worth having a guide to explain hutong history and architecture. This was one our Beijing highlights.

It’s about 15-20mins car ride from Jingshan Park. Sun was setting as we arrived so we get the beautiful sunset view. A pleasant walk from one end to the other, ended with the restaurants and shops. There’s an indoor street hawkers selling mostly local delicacies. Past the hawkers and you’ll join a street of retails and further up, restaurants. Great place for 2-3 hours in the evening/night

Shichahai is a lovely scenic area in the northwest of Beijing, it has three connecting lakes, Front Sea, Back Sea and West Sea, and remaining old-style local residences, Hutong's and Courtyards.

Shichahai has great walking areas. This scenic place is very near the centre of Beijing, you can eat at any of the various restaurants around the lake-side, also a lovely walk, cycle track, and rickshaw ride along the water-front and Hutong's nearby. Plenty of shops - handcrafts, snacks, numerous chinese cuisine, souvenirs shops and other knick-knacks down the side alleys, great photos shoots lovely lakes and willow trees, bridges, shops and restaurants (and many tourists).

A lot of people and a very busy place, behind Shichahai are the Hutongs (small streets and lanes) residents may accommodate up to 15 families there are no toilet/showers inside the house, but communal toilet/showers - the old part of Beijing before the high risers - this area being near the Drum Tower
A major point of interest in Shichahai today is its remaining older residences - Hutong's and courtyards

History here is as far back 1115-1368 during Jin Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty

This beautiful place is very near the centre of Beijing and is a great favourite of the locals. It has three connected lakes. We were on a conducted tour and our group was allowed only about two hours. I could have easily spent a whole day (or more!). What to do? Well, you can people-watch, you can walk along the lakes, you can eat at any of the numerous restaurants on the lake-side, you can take a rickshaw ride along the water-front, or you can shop for souvenirs and other knick-knacks. Utterly photogenic. Don't miss the bridges, I saw at least two, there are probably more. This is one place in Beijing which I will explore in depth on my next visit.

Shichahai is a famous scenic area. It includes three lakes, Front Sea, Back Sea and West Sea. The name Shichahai means “Sea with Ten Temples” in Chinese. It got this name because here were actually ten temples around the lake. Shichahai has been a famous place for leisure and spend summer time since Qing dynasty. It is nice to go around the sea and travel through some famous spots with stories behind them. Shichahai is surrounded with places of historic interest and scenic beauty. On the other hand, it is a place with old-style local residences. You can see a lot of local people around Houhai park and seek their daily life style. In the evening, there are old man fishing near the lake, holding colorful flash lights to help them look for fish. Old ladies at grannies age always gathers and dance around with music near the lake. You can enjoy a peace and quiet local life at the north part of the lake, as well as engaging with young, passionate night life at the south part of the lake in night bars with rock bands. Therefore, if you are passionate with night life or rock music, you’d better visit Houhai in the evening to see rock concert in bars. However, you can also see a lot of art and architecture spots, such as Prince Gong’s mansion, one of the most famous tourist attractions to see royal architecture in Beijing. Many architectures around Shichahai played important roles in Beijing’s urban construction history as well as political and cultural history. One main representative is the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, who was considered the mother of The young Chinese republic.

Recently, as tourists get more, some handicrafts shops, snack streets and bars appeared, which made Shichahai a place where gathers both traditional Beijing culture and new culture in Beijing.

Tips: You can have dinner at local Beijing style restaurant around the lake, or enjoy Old Beijing snacks at the snack street.
Suggested food: 爆肚Baodu(sliced lamb or beef stomach or tripe)
褡裢火烧 Meat-filled steamed dumplings 绿豆糕The mung bean jelly cakes (stir-fried with other goodies in soy and chili sauce) 奶酪(a light and delicate milk-based yogurt appeared since imperial times. All you taste is the pure essence of milk, with just a hint of the sweetness.)
Those Beijing snacks are tasty and usually not expensive. Also, they are fast and convenient to eat, which enables you to eat as well as wondering around to enjoy beautiful seneries

My friend and I went to Shichahai(什剎海)during Spring Festival. The water of the lakes was frozen and the lakes had become a skating rink. Different from the normal skating rinks, people liked to ride ice skating car there. Just like you ride a bicycle on the ground. It was a little pity that we did not try. We just stood on the shore and watched people in skating.
I love the Hutongs there very much. Hutong is a kind of narrow alleys in northern China. However, I like Beijing’s Hutong because the community is so peaceful and safety. People live there called Beijing natives(老北京),they are pure and helpful. There was a street of different kinds of restaurants, bars, and stores of Beijing culture souvenirs. It was a very meaningful thing that we sent some postcards to our parents in a post store. You could choose the date when the postcards be sent, and tell the shopkeeper.
Shichahai is a large place, and you may spent more time there if you want to walk around. It is a good plan to go there in the afternoon, so you can enjoy the sights from daytime to nighttime. They will give you different feelings. Don’t worry about the supper, there are lots of restaurants and bars. You may try different food there!
