It is a nice walk across the bridge, you get a good view of the main temple and also all the boats on the lake. Take your time on the island, walk all the small parts to find all the weird crocks and corners. After walking the small island (30 min) we decided to take a boat over to the main area. Boats are safe and a quick way to get around - they are not free though, I think we paid 10 or 20RMB (about 30 cent).

Accessed by the 17 Arches Bridge, Nanhu island is in the south-east section of the Summer Palace. It contains a temple and a number of other old buildings all of which are worth seeing but just walking around the island and taking in the views back to Longevity Hill and buildings there is what were enjoyed most. You can get there by strolling along the pedestrian road to the south-east of Longevity Hill (check out the guy who does water calligraphy on the roadway - he was there both days we visited) or by taking a boat from one of the docks to the island itself. Worth doing.

Direct access to this island is via walking across the Seventeen Arch Bridge. It is the largest island located within the Summer Palace Kunming Lake area. The small island is a lovely place to stroll as it has an 18th century pavilion, temple and Hanxu Hall where the emperor Qianlong could watch the naval exercises. These buildings are incorporated between landscape gardens and rockery areas. A very scenic part of the lake area.

This is the island on Kunming Lake linked to the shore by the seventeen-arch bridge. It is directly opposite Longevity Hill. There is a temple, a large hall and pavilions on the island. Dragon boats operate during spring and summer to ferry visitors to the island. The island is like a big tortoise on the lake with the seventeen-arch bridge as it's stretched neck. The tortoise is the symbol of longevity and this huge tortoise was designed to highlight the Empress Dowager Cixi's longevity.

The Summer Palace and Nanhu Island area is quite lovely and very interesting. Enjoying the park-like grounds and hiking up Longevity Hill to The Tower of the Fragrance (Incense) of the Buddha create unforgettable memories. Where else can one see a full-size marble boat? A dragon boat ride on Kunming Lake from the mainland over to Nanhu island is delightful, and strolling around this entire compound takes a visitor back to another era. Reserve a couple of hours for casual strolling around the grounds, but definitely do not miss this site.
