The story of the minorities in China is fascinating. In this park, they built typical buildings for each one. However, most of them were close. In place that there were some people, they try to sell us something or busy with their mobile phones. In open museums around the world, you have the chance to see traditional activities (art, agriculture, carpenters, ect..), here, nothing.. So, the place has great potential but in the way its operate now, its waste of time and money

The museum is in the heart of Beijing but was like an oasis in the middle of the big city. The teen girls and I tried to take photos without the modern buildings in the background because the area was so beautiful. That was not always easy. The property is directly next to the Olympic Venues .. but finding the entrance was a bit complicated. When you are walking south out of the Olympic facilities.. keep walking until you come to an intersection with 2 large totems on the right. The entrance is to your right on the right.
The grounds were stunning and an certainly worth a visit. It was more expensive than many of the places we have visited at 90 CYN per adult but we were practically there alone in a city of millions. So with it! You only need an hour or 2 to wander. But take your time to see every nook... you...i will be pleasantly surprised.
The Olympic venues are complementary and this is a nice add on.

I found out about this site by pure coincidence. I haven’t seen any advertisment, it wasn’t mention in my guide.
But if I missed it, I would be sorry. I visited it on Saturday morning and there was so much to see... and hear! The place is organised like a village of different houses from different regions of China. There are exhibitions in some of the houses. But the best thing are live performances of singers and dancers - again from different regions.
You can easily spend several hours there wandering around, watching and listening... or simply having rest from busy Beijing by keeping yourself under the trees.

I visited this place as I was in business and I had some time during the day, it’s fascinating yet if alone can be boring. Go with friends and at most spend 2 hours. It’s a fifty fifty thing so if you miss this, it’s not a big deal. In dire need of maintenance and cleaning. Empty park which was very different to all places as in china everywhere it’s crowded but then it was empty because it’s not one of those very famous touristic spot. You get to see building but most of them are closed and when you peek inside it’s full of dried leaves and branches. I wouldn’t recommend this place for babies as the dust can be harmful as it’s not clean and many places are accessible only by steep steps. Otherwise if you really don’t have anything to do and have time to spare then go there, it’s not bad but it’s not excellent either

We (4 adults) visited the Ethnic Culture Park in June-17. We arrived at 10.30. There was no people inside the park apart from some staff in the houses, all too occupied with there phones... When paying 4*90 RMB we got no information that there was no show until several hours later. It was hot and we wanted to buy some water but the sales clerk was just paying attention to her phone too. One person in the group spoke some Mandarine but they didn't care. We asked for a refund but they refused. Our advise: DONT GO THERE - NOT WORTH IT!
(The Ethnic park in Kunming is much better!)

Anyone who's been to China knows how unlikely it is to find any public place empty. When I visited this museum, it was in the middle of a weekend day and there was not a single soul there. I literally had the place to myself. China is quite a rich ethnic and cultural tapestry and this place is a bit of a missed opportunity. It's shabby and the English translations are expectedly poor but it is nonetheless interesting and worth a visit. There are I believe "56 officially recognized nationalities" in this country so you can spend quite a lot of time here learning about them.

This place is such a mess, literally, that it can be quite amusing to see. The replicas of different Chinese architecture are mostly fake and abandoned, the only other people I saw in the park were some technicians trying to hide some pipelines that where coming out one of the artificial ponds. Most of the paintings on the buildings seem like a little kid draw them. The overall decay of this place could be quite amusing to some, including myself, making the visit worth it. But I challenge you to try and stay in there for longer than 1h, without getting stomach sick.

This is a very large open air park, with an excellent display of real size replicas of the houses and temples of different Chinese ethnic groups and how they live. Except on Monday, which is regarded as a rest day with entrance fee halved, there are regular cultural performances by different ethnic groups. The place, regrettably, now looks a bit run down and a process of renovation appears to be going on. Nevertheless, there are still a lot to see and learn by following the path. Some of the buildings and scenery are beautiful and amazing. If you want to go into the houses to appreciate the exhibits or to experience how it feels to live in such accommodation, you are usually required to climb up some steep steps. Those with walking difficulties may not be able to manage. On the whole, the park has excellent potential. It will be very attractive, and informative too, once the renovation has been completed.

I imagine this venue was a lot better during the Olympics, but now it's like a super ghost town. Kudos to the people who envisioned this and the teams that found structures and sections of whole villages to transport to this site. They're all surrounded by typical plantings and, if originally located on hillsides or lakes, those are reproduced too. So super start.
However, there the quality stops. You would expect persons at each locale to be available to describe the particular culture or to represent by dress (where appropriate), but no. There could be typical music playing or looping videos about that locale. But not that either. What you find in most cases is what seems abandoned village after village.
There are supposed to be mini museums of each region. But I found most locked up.
I did see a signpost on entering of what looked to be a schedule of about 7 examples of particular music and dance, but the list was in Chinese. Not too helpful for international visitors.
In sum, if you've never been outside of Beijing or Shanghai and are interested in local examples of architecture, this venue is fabulous. But if you're also interested in the various cultures represented, you will be disappointed. This venue has potential to be a major tourist draw, but the current administrators must implement suggestions such as those above, as well as study examples like Polynesian Culture Center in Hawaii, and advertise, advertise. Part of the expense could be implemented by offering for sale a robust selection of typical local handicrafts (which could also serve as an important source of support for the minorities represented).
And, BTW, as hill villages are really located on hills, be prepared for lots of steps.
