Often come into this station from Wuhan. The station has a couple of main entrances North and South. Usual security measures but access is very smooth. This place has lots of handy places you can grab something to eat. Heads up there is a quiet Starbucks just left too the north entrance escalators that’s very quiet for the bustle of this station.

It is always busy day and night. Hard to find a taxi, but there are buses. And it is easy to find a place to live and eat near the train station.

We took the metro here when leaving Beijing. Surrendered our Yikatong prepaid cards and got our refunds here. Took a bullet train from here to Xian. This railway station is huge and very busy. Quite modern too. There are several entrances to the station.

We came from Beijing International Airport with Express bus nr. 7 (end stop and it took 95 minutes). Tickets bought on internet. But still we needed to go and queue up at the ticket office to get the printed tickets, after showing passport and visa. Because if this and warnings about a big queue for security check, we chose to take a train next day (and stayed at a hotel close by). Collecting tickets (ticket office on the right side of the main entrance) early evening was perfect. Absolutely NO queue! When we came back the day after we used the right side entrance about 10 am, and surprise: No queue there either for security check!!! Coming into he big hall, beware people who want to help you with your luggage.....for money. It is only 2-3 minutes to go to the waiting rooms. Look at the big screen for your train and the number for your waiting room. In the main hall you can buy food and drinks. Even coffee from Starbucks.
In the waiting room (big) you will have information in Chinese and English. We took the fast train (bullet train) to Taiyuan. A very pleasant experience!

Waiting in line was a mess for a while... You better know which line to go to and be ready. The pushing and shoving is normal. If got small kids and do not speak the language, just stay together. You will get lost. We ate Pizza Hut in this large train station, it tasted same as USA.

We were told we could consign our bikes. We could not get within a km of the station to get to consignment office, thanks to the countless military people refusing to let us in with our bicycles. Next day we arrived with all our panniers (very difficult to move around with so many bags). We were told there would be "red hat" luggage assistants. We did not see a single one, nor were there luggage carts. This made for a painful kilometer-plus trek to our train car.

I think the worst and most disgusting part of the journey was the amount of smoking allowed on the train. There are no smoking signs, but they allow people to smoke between cars and leave the doors open. Makes absolutely no sense and results in horrifyingly bad air quality. Bring an excellent face mask, if you must take a train. It's a truly awful, third world experience.

If you have to collect your tickets ask the driver to drop you off in the lower level. My taxi driver dropped me off at the upper level, so I had to walk a bit to find a escalator.

Once you are downstairs go through the middle gates ( you can see the ticket windows with blue signs inside).

The lady in the information booth speaks English and pointed me to the Ticket window with English service #16.

Once you get your tickets you have to go through the gates, please be aware that you cannot use the automated gate, you have to show your passport to the attendant.

Once you are in look for your train in the board, everything is in Mandarine so you have to go by the numbers. The fist one is the train number ( look in your ticket for it) then the destination on Chinese, the time of departure, and then the waiting gate #.

Good luck!

This is a large and busy train station. Allow plenty of time, particularly if you are also collecting tickets. At the North Entrance head for the area for tickets (different to many other entrances available). There will be a security queue before entering the ticket hall, after which there is an English speaking ticket counter. You can then proceed directly to the departures hall which is vast and has many platforms/waiting areas, but is well laid out.

We were told that the South Entrance is easier to navigate; keep an eye out for signs as soon as you get off the Metro (if coming that way).

In short, it took us around 45 minutes to get off the metro, find the ticket hall, get to departures and on the train. Allow as much time here as you would going to a large airport.

Recommend collecting tickets before the day of travel to be on the safe side in case of long queues. For us, it was fairly straightforward. We went into the “North Tickets” entrance, and there was a ticket window for English speakers. Tickets picked up no problem.

On the day of travel we arrived at the station 1.45 hours before departure. This was plenty of time and in fact we were through security and at our gate within 10 mins - queues (it was 9am in the morning so had expected it to be more busy).

Show your passport and tickets at the front entrance gate (we used North entrance but it really doesn’t matter). Then it’s through to security. And then read the board to see which gate your train is departing and head to the relevant waiting room. Our gate was busy (three trains ahead of ours) so we found a seat in an adjacent waiting room.

TIps?
1. Collect tickets before day of travel (or have them delivered if you’ve ordered at least 3 days in advance).
2. Don’t worry about which entrance to use. If it’s the wrong one, you will easily be directed to the right one
3. There are lots of food places within the station by the gates including McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks alongside usual range of Chinese fare.
4. Get pot noodles for the train journey. Hot water is available on the train so an easy snack to keep you going on a long journey.

It is a lot of traffic to go the door and go throught he door is also slow since they will X ray your luggage. Inside is like an airport, not diffiult to find your gate. Do not take any help they are extremely expensive.
