We were lucky to be able to visit Beijing’s 700 year old Hutongs (narrow lanes). We got to see and feel how the old China used to be.
We also experienced the customs and a delicious home cooked meal prepared by a family in their home.
I recommend if given this opportunity you take it

What a pleasant way to see the traditional side of the original way of living in Beijing. We took off on a push bike rickshaw and headed for Soong Ching- ling's house who married Sun Yat-Sen, tucked away in what seemed a very affluent area of Beijing. The gardens and the house are untouched but are in very good condition for the age of the attraction. We spent a good 1.5 hours taking in the history and charm of the house and gardens. We then visited a Hutong ( Chinese house ) where we were greeted by a Chinese artist who lives there with his wife and 95 yo mother in law, the house itself was small compared to what we are use to in Australia but it was spotlessly clean and tidy, where every conceivable space was utilised. A market and a bell tower were next to visit, at the bell tower there are 69 steps to climb up to the tower where they are rung every hour or so by 5 bell ringers .... Very spectacular.
This tour is fun filled and William was a very professional and knowledgeable host.

I bought one personal bike 5 years ago because it's the best way to avoid being late to work and to move around Beijing and no traffic-worry.
But then...Beijing got into this new trend...the public bikes! They're so colorful and mostly over-jam-packed near subway exits or touristic areas.
The pioneering public bike is Mobike. I only use this because it's ready-connect to WeChat app. And the yellow competitor, the Ofo.
How can we use these bikes?
1. Download the app and pay the deposit (can be refunded) Mobike = RMB 299, Ofo = RMB 199
2. Scan QR code and the bike unlock within just a second. Yay! You're ready to go.
3. Fee: 0.50 cents RMB per 15 minutes and sometimes these public bikes got promotions on holidays, giving free rides! A coupon if you share this app to others.
Where and how to find them?
1. Easy to spot outside MRT stations
2. Bike parking areas
3. Busy public places bike parking areas
4. Behind your buildings (some people hide them for the following morning use)
5. You can even reserve the one nearest to you using the map locator. Reserve it for 10 minutes before you go out of your house (less hassle scouting)
A bit sturdy needs a bit more of push and power to pedal, but somehow you will get used to it. Choose the lighter in weight because Beijing roads sometimes are not totally plain and straight.
