My wife of 30 years and I did an 11 day Tanzania and gorilla watching safari. Our guide was Japheth Godwin Kiwelu, a veritable King among Safari guides. His driving skill was elite, his vison that of an eagle, his knowledge of the animals next level and he delivered his information complete with animal sounds and humour. In eleven days he delivered three of the best days of our lives. Spending three nights at Serengeti Safari Lodge we awoke one morning to elephants in the garden, we spent a day sitting on our balcony viewing the Serengeti plain with rocky outcrops in the foreground and mountains in the background watching 11 elephants feeding and being. We saw zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, lions, lion cubs, baboon babies, giraffes, hippos, vultures and flamingos to name a few. We spent times pinching ourselves. One day there was an informal motor khana between the20 guides and safari vehicles. "Jeffo" could find animals before others and could always place us in viewing position A no matter how many vehicles were already present. The drive out of the Ngorongoro Crater was exhilarating. Thank you Jeffo for the trip of a lifetime!

We first used African Sunset Safaris for a trip in 2022 so when I decided to plan a return trip in 2024 I did not hesitate to contact Haron. This time our trip involved Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Haron was very prompt at replying to my WhatsApp messages and together we came up with a perfect trip. We were met in Kigali by our guide Richard who was with us for 3 days as we continued to Uganda for gorilla trekking. We had a night in Kigali and before we departed for Uganda we visited the Genocide Memorial. It was a moving and overwhelming experience but I would definitely recommend it if you are in Kigali. He was an excellent guide and gave us lots of information as we travelled. Gorilla trekking was just amazing and so well organised in Uganda. The trek is tough but so worth it. Richard brought us back to Kigali and we flew onto Nairobi. It was lovely to see Haron again who met us at the airport and dropped us to our hotel the Sarova Stanley in Nairobi city centre. It was lovely to stay in this historical hotel. Next morning our guide Paul picked us up and we headed to the Mara for 3 nights. Paul is a wonderful guide and driver. He did his absolute best to ensure we saw the very best of the Mara and after our 3 days with him we had seen all of the Big 5. From the Mara Paul brought us to the Tanzanian border crossing and his driving skills on some terrible roads were top class! For our 3 nights in Tanzania we had Hussein as our guide. Again he was also a super guide, ensuring we saw the very best of the Serengeti (including a pride of lions feeding on a freshly killed buffalo!) and Ngorongoro. And his driving skills were also impressive over the rough roads! We then returned to Kenya and were delighted again to have Paul’s company for our 2 nights in Amboseli. He ensured we saw this beautiful park at its best and got some great photos of elephants and lion cubs. I can’t recommend African Sunset Safaris enough, they are a super company with some of the best safari guides in East Africa.

TLDR: We had a fantastic honeymoon with African Sunset Safaris and would 100% do another safari with them. There were some slight changes to the itinerary, but for the most part they were upgrades, so didn't bother us at all. They try their very best to ensure you have the best possible time with them and they treat you like family.

We booked a 12 day Kenya safari and Uganda Gorilla trek for a very reasonable price. The initial itinerary that I inquired about had been changed so when I contacted African Sunset Safaris they sent me the updated itinerary, which seemed crammed full. Their communication via whatsapp was prompt and I was able to pay via credit card to book the trip. Our flight into Kenya had to reroute for a few hours due to bad weather at Kenya airport, so we arrived late and then discovered our airline hadn't put our luggage on the plane, but our driver, Paul, who was waiting for us very kindly helped to arrange the collection of our luggage when it arrived a few days later and bought a fried chicken meal for us to eat en route to Amboseli, so we could make it in time for an evening game drive. Within the first minute in Amboseli we saw a huge elephant right next to the road and then a lion. This was the start of an exceptional safari for every park in Kenya, as we saw the big 5 and more. Our accommodation at Amboseli Serena was fantastic (the pool was being refurbished, so we couldn't use that, but the view, service and food was great). The next day Paul ensured we had a perfect day looking at animals and getting great photographs, the highlight being a cheater no less than 3 meters from our vehicle. The following day we got our luggage back and we transferred to a different vehicle and driver, Charles, who would take us for the rest of our time in Kenya. Charles's vehicle had a tire issue, so he bought us a drink in a cafe while it was quickly fixed and then we set off. Whether it was because of our delayed landing in Kenya, having to collect our luggage, or the tire issue, we never ended up going to Ol Pejeta to see the chimpanzees, which I was a bit gutted about, as I was looking forward to seeing them, but I suspect even if we had no delays it would be too long of a journey to get from Amboseli to Ol Pejeta and then to Lake Nakuru in one day, as google say it is an almost 11 hour drive. I have noticed that the itinerary for this package has altered slighty to stay in Ol Pejeta overnight before going to Lake Nakuru, so it may be that they have recognised it is a stretch to cover so much in such a short time. When we were travelling we discovered our accommodation had been changed from what was originally planned, but wow was it an upgrade! Room-wise, Serena Lake Elmenteita was definitely the most beautiful accommodation we we had in Kenya, it was a shame we were only there for one night and arrived just as the pool closed. Our first game drive with Charles in Lake Nakuru was excellent, we saw black and white rhinos, flamingos, monkeys and other animals. Then we headed to the Maasai mara, where again our accomodation was changed from what we initially had been booked. Again, however it was an upgrade in our opinion, as we had a glorious view from our window over the mara and the hotel pool also had a great view. Another 2 full days of wonderful safari drives followed with a picnic on the mara, a walk by the river where we saw crocodiles up close, and visited a tribe's village. Charles worked very hard to successfully find us a leopard too. Charles is an excellent safari guide and driver, he is very personable and chatty, which puts you at ease immediately and makes the long drives fly by. As it was our honeymoon, Haron had promised us a sundowner, which we asked about, because no one had mentioned anything about it since we booked the trip. No sundowners were available that night, but instead we had an evening bush meal, which was a nice experience (drinks not included). The itinerary originally said we were then to stay at giraffe manor overnight, but it was fully booked, so we stayed at the four seasons instead. I was highly skeptical that we would stay in giraffe manor anyway, as the rooms are VERY expensive and often booked up way in advance, so I didn't see how it would be possible to afford that room in addition to everything else and have the tour operator still make a profit with the low price we paid. Even so the tour still seemed great value for money, so we weren't too disheartened that we couldn't stay at the manor. What we didn't expect though was when we got to Nairobi, Charles took us to the Giraffe Centre (the nature park of Giraffe manor) where you can hand feed the giraffes. This was in my top 3 moments of the holiday, as you have several cheeky giraffe eating out of your hand! The next surprise was Charles took us to the African Sunset Safari office where a traditional homemade dinner was served to us with the African Sunset Safari team along with beers and bourbon and coke. This was so special, as we got to know the team a bit more and were welcomed and treated like family. You can really tell how much their customers mean to Haron in particular. The next day we flew to Uganda where again we met our final driver, Abdul. We stayed at a different hotel to the one we were told, whilst this hotel was not necessarily an upgrade, the history of the hotel made it very special to stay there and am glad we did (the hotel was one that the film Hotel Rwanda is based on). We visited the genocide museum and learnt so much about the Rwandan genocide that I was ignorantly unaware of prior. Originally there was some confusion as to whether we would do the gorilla trek in Rwanda or Uganda. I thought it would be Uganda, as I believe the trekking fee is less there than Rwanda. I am glad it was Uganda, as the country is beautiful and that is the most famous place for gorilla trekking. The drive to Uganda was long, but felt a lot quicker, as the scenery was out of this world. We stopped and gave sweets and chocolate to local children in the villages and their happy faces made me wish I brought more to give to more children, so if you do go book a safari or trek make sure you bring lots of bags of sweets for the kids! The accommodation was a different lodge camp than advertised again, but yet again we did not care. This camp was a not-for-profit charity that helps build water storage wells for poor villages, so we were glad our money went towards a good cause rather than a business mans bank account. The balconies of the lodges also face west, so you get the most incredible sunsets every evening. We could have easily stayed there peacefully for a week. The drive back to Rwanda was again beautiful and we had a smooth journey back to Kenya where we continued our travels. All in all we had a fantastic honeymoon and wouldn't change it. We highly recommend African Sunset Safaris to everyone who wants to do a safari or trek. The changes in accommodation weren't a problem for us, especially as they were mostly improvements, but I imagine for some people that might be a worry or if your families want to know where you will be for safety reasons it may cause concern. I would just advise the African Sunset Safari team inform the customers earlier/as soon as you know there is a problem, or need to change accommodation instead of on the day, or at the time of arrival. At the office meal they did say Haron wanted to make the trip extra special for us so they upgraded the accommodations and we can honestly say it was our most amazing holiday so far. Thank you very much African Sunset Safaris!

Haron picked us up from our accommodation early in the morning. Thus, we were not only able to spot several animals (lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo - list goes on) but also see the sun rise above the skyline of Nairobi. It truly was an amazing experience and I can only recommend visiting Nairobi National Park in company of African Sunset Safaris.

’d like to start this review by saying I’ve been on 8 safaris across Africa so when I say this is the worst one I’ve ever been on, don’t take it lightly and you definitely need to reconsider booking with this company.

I booked a 2 night 3 day safari package with this company for me and my friends for $2200

I was dealing with a person called Sam who gave me assurance that this safari would be the best you’ve ever been on quote “you’ve been on many safaris before but not one with Sam half Masai” he was selling this safari to me like his life depended on it.

We arrived to the park at 5pm and missed a game drive due to Sam requesting cash payment to avoid taxes, which I agreed because he said I’d be helping him out. So on our journey to Masai Mara I had to go to western union to withdraw cash that took a huge chunk of our time.

Anyway, we decided to settle into the hotel (which was completely dead, not a soul in sight) and at dinner we spoke to Sam’s boss Haron and explained that because we have missed the first game drive that we shouldn’t be paying for the first day. His response was that you should keep hold of $240 dollars as we didn’t go on the game drive. We thought okay cool that’s the end of that

We wake up to hear that Sam won’t be joining us, he hired a non English speaking guide to take us around the park. He said quote “I’ll join you in the evening drive, I’m coming from Nairobi”

Now one thing to note is: as a filmmmaker and photographer the reason we booked this safari was because Sam had mentioned that he’s also a photographer and that he knows all the spots. Which was a huge factor as to why we booked.

The evening comes and Sam is nowhere to be seen.

We get on a call with Sam and he makes up excuses. We ask Sam for a full break down of the safari as we felt hard done by. He refuses and tells me to “shut up silly boy” my friend then takes the phone and speaks to Sam asking him to be respectful and to give us a break down. Again he’s very hesitant. The Call went nowhere and then he says “by the way you have an outstanding balance of $240 to go on to tomorrows morning game drive”

We asked him why as we didn’t even go on safari the first day, he responded “it doesn’t matter as that was the package sold to you”

In the end we ended up paying the full amount for 2 thirds of the experience. Sam was extremely disrespectful, in fact he didn’t even show up, over charged us, and gave us a non English speaking guide to take us on a 12 hour tour where we couldn’t even communicate to him properly so we just looked at each others faces in confusion.

We, a group of 18 friends from United States and Canada, had a wonderful and unforgettable experience in Kenya and Tanzania Safaris tour with African Sunset Safaris during August 28 through September 14 2023. The arrangements by Sunset Safari on lodges, food, animal tracking, and game drives are well planned and we had experienced better than our expectations. My wife and I were luckily assigned to sit in Haron’s Toyota Land Cruiser for the whole Safari adventure. With his 16 years of experience on the business, Haron showed his knowledge and abilities on spotting animals easily. He is also willing to spend an extra time to drive us to see some African famous sceneries. Therefore we have seen basically all the animals that we expected to see and also some speculative scenario views we didn’t expected. Thank you Haron and Sunset Safaris staff for giving us the lifetime and unforgettable experience. I give them a five star rate and will highly recommend to our friends for their future African Safari tour.
