Unique space, so peaceful. Mingle with the monks, and show interest, they may take you to visit the old church wih all the frescoes.

There is a cluster of Coptic monasteries dating as far back as the 4th century.
Many relics of local Saints and even some bones believed to be from John the Baptist.
Monks are eager to educate foreign visitors and meeting them is enlightening.

Well worth a visit, although not as visually stunning as any of the temples on offer, still fascinating and relaxing.
Wonderful people and an extremely austere and humble building.
We really enjoyed our short time here.

This oasis is particularly famous for having a number of monasteries, and as monasteries were first created by Egyptians, these are among the oldest in the world. Coptic Orthodox Christianity is very conservative compared to other branches of Christianity. The monasteries are famous for their beautiful religious Frescoes decorations and for the manuscripts of their libraries. They have been rebuilt and restored many times, but ancient architectural features can still be seen . Very interesting to converse with the monks and see the way they live.
