It was interesting to see this bit of Cairo. We were there the week after the terrorist attack north of Cairo at a Coptic church so initially were quite wary of going there. There is plenty of security and we were reassured by our guide that it was totally safe. There were few tourists and it seemed better looked after... More

Make sure you go - make sure you definitely insist the taxi driver takes you directly to the main square. Have a bodyguard if you feel it is necessary. Nearly 60 people were bombed in a Coptic Church recently - however, is it worth the risk? YES, and YES! The COPTIC MUSEUM is cleaner and more professionally organised than any... More

The old city is filled with wonderful shops and coffee houses with many people smoking water pipes filled with sweet tobacco mixtures. During the day go there to visit the religious sites, both Christian and Muslim. A number of sites with great significance. At night go there for the colorful street life! Bright lights, happy people wanting to have a... More

An excellent place visit in Cairo to understand the Christan/Jewish history of Egypt... But, anything "AD" appears relatively 'new world' in Egypt, after visiting sites from third and second millennia BC. The medieval architecture and feel is great to spend a full day there.

This is a small, waterside quarter, also known as Misr Kadima, which is dominated by the interesting Coptic Museum. There are several churches to visit, one of which was sold in the 11th century to the Jews so the Copts could pay a tax bill. This Ben Ezra Synagogue is the site of the famous Geniza, in which huge quantities... More

Well worth visit. Very high level of security. Lively area that gave a sense of Cairo life. Was a bit wary at first but felt comfortable with security measures and presense.

I have been several times to Old Cairo and it is a place one never gets enough from. The churches and synagogue here are just marvelous. One walks in narrow streets were no car can come (fortunately). Each location has its own distinct history. The Hanging Church was once the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch. The Abu Serga church... More

I would advise reading up on the history of the Coptic church before going, it would make more sense when you get to the museum. The hanging cathedral's woodwork is absolutely stunning.
