What a place! In the middle of nowhere! Egypt has done an incredible job with this site. A spectacular museum is on the site which displays the archaeological finds--whale bones dating from about 40 million years ago. I loved the serenity of this place. The wind carved landscape. The quiet. The endless miles of nothingness. This is a real experience!... More

A very interesting museum to visit. It provides with new exciting information about this area. The indoor museum is very simple and quick. You can also walk around the 7km open air museum to see the fossils on site

Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, in the Western Desert of Egypt, contains invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, and now extinct, suborder of whales, Archaeoceti. These fossils represent one of the major stories of evolution: the emergence of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from a previous life as a land-based animal. This is the most important site in the world... More

Whale skeletons in the Sahara desert? Yes. Fascinating story. This is a well-curated open air museum. With any luck, you can walk farther than the incredibly noisy Egyptian tourists and experience utter silence. The juxtaposition of huge marine fossils and the endless desert is affecting. This place seems to be a quick stop for package tours from Cairo. Wait them... More

This is a UNESCO world heritage site due to the thousands of whale fossils from the period where they were evolving from land based to sea based mammals. There is a museum that showcases selected fossils and provides an explanation. The night sky is amazing, and if you go at the right time (crescent moon, correct season) you can see... More

We added a visit to El Fayoum as a day trip for our last day in Egypt. The whole area is amazing, but Wadi al-Hitan was the highlight. The rock formations are amazing, the views are epic, and the new visitor's center is exceptional - tons of information in a well-designed space. If you can make the time, it's worth... More

Wadi al-Hitan is in Fayoum. The drive there itself is not that bad. But when you actually get there, you are blown away by the ruins and how well they are preserved and exhibited at the same time.

When you travel 35 million years back in time it's ancient, even in Egypt! Wadi al Hitan or Valley of Whales is 40km away from the highway, 4x4 track into the desert. You feel like Lawrence of Arabia with the wind swirling into your face till you stop next to these hills with strange erosion markings, almost calligraphic in appearance.... More
