Neighbourhood: Myeongdong
Arguably Seoul’s most famous neighbourhood and undoubtedly one of its most popular, Myeongdong takes shopping and eating to new heights, with hundreds of shops, restaurants, and cafes all stacked on top of one another. The rise in popularity of Korean cosmetics, fashion, and more has made this area a must-see for visitors who come and marvel at Myeongdong’s often frenetic pace and energy. Lotte and Shinsaegae’s massive department stores are also popular draws for both Korean and luxury products. The department stores, just like Myeongdong’s streets, are crowded around the clock. Myeongdong’s many street food carts are also immensely popular for their inexpensive and quirky offerings (French-fry-encrusted corn dogs, anyone?). The neighbourhood’s popularity, as well as its close proximity to other popular sights and neighbourhoods, makes it one of Seoul’s most popular places to stay.

Gorgeous cathedral built in Gothic Revival style in the heart of Seoul. As a Catholic, I’d been wanting to visit it for a while. It was a must on my week long visit to Korea. The grounds still had their Christmas nativity scene up in early January. My only regret was I didn’t have time to stay for mass and the inside was closed because of current mass. I did have a chances
to ask for Mother Mary’s intercession at two of the statues behind and in front of the cathedral. I hope my next visit is much longer!

A church has been at this location since the late 19th century when the Apostolic Vicar of Korea sought land to build a church in Seoul. The church is a Neo-Gothic building with heavy use of red, grey and white bricks perhaps with slight influence of Brick Gothic and Japanese Red Brick Architecture. Otherwise, the building is very typical of Gothic style. The interior of the church is as lavishly decorated as you’d normally expect for the seat of the Archbishop of a large city like Seoul. There are stained glass windows throughout the building, the most elaborate decorate the high altar and contain over a dozen scenes depicting the life and times of Jesus. While the reredos are murals of the apostles and disciples.

The church is an active place of worship, so you do have to be careful when visiting.

Myeong-dong Cathedral is relatively modern but its architects went for a neo-Gothic look. It is beautiful. There's a crypt to check out, which is accessible from the exterior. You should definitely check out the museum next to the cathedral about the history of Catholicism in South Korea. There are short inscriptions for the various items. I got a personalized English language tour from a very kind and knowledgeable worker/volunteer.

Beautiful Cathedral. Beautiful place of worship. Mass in English at 9am Sunday was full! Meaningful celebration.

One MUST go down to the basement of the cathedral! The restaurants, cafe and shops are an unexpected treat! Plus there is this amazing bakery here. They have superb breads baked fresh.

We went there at sunset on a Friday afternoon. Church was open even though there was no service. A very solemn place to reflect and say some prayers. The surrounding grounds was also a great place to take pictures. Will visit again. Highly recommended especially for Catholics.

This was a must see of sights on our list. We attended mass in English and were also able to participate in reconciliation just before mass started. The alter servers were very friendly and everyone spoke English. They also have a store on the grounds and a museum. Definitely worth seeing even if you’re not Catholic.

It was great to visit this cathedral. Gothic in design. Lovely at night as the cathedral has lights on. Please make sure you have at least an hour to spare as the place is quiet big.

Loved the stain glass window. Don't forget to visit the crypt.

Inside the cathedral, the ceilings are lovely. Simple but does the job.

Worth a visit.

A nice cathedral. You may find one in each western and central european city. If you have visited a few cathedrals in Europe, don’t bother to come here. On the other hand, if one has a particular interest in religion in Korea, it could be of importance. Nice place, nice surroundings.
