- Milind ShahAhmedabad, India2,020 contributionsNice stoppage on way to GadauriZhinxali water reservoir falls on the way towards Gudauri and Kazbegi. We reached the place in the afternoon and the views from here were amazing. There are a plenty of shops and eateries here to have some food as well as some winter wear that you can buy for your tour to Gudauri. The place also has some photo spots especially the ones with swings and other props. The colour of the water turns blue when the sky is clear and offers a spectacular view of the landscape. Our tour guide also explained us the brief history about the place and how the landscape has changed over the years.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 May 2024

Located on the military highway north of Tbilisi, the reservoir was created in the Soviet era by constructing a dam on the Aragvi river. The W-shaped reservoir provides drinking water to Tbilisi and the nearby dam generates hydroelectric power. Both get their name from the nearby city of Jinvali which was an important trading city in the ancient times.
The reservoir is beautiful and serene with turquoise blue waters. It offers many photo opportunities. Creation of the reservoir submerged many ancient archaelogical sites and as per our guide, the tops of some of these are still visible when the water level is low.
A fortress complex is situated on the banks of the reservoir and there is a small tourist oriented market across the road.
The reservoir is beautiful and definitely worth a visit.

The Jinvali water reserve is an amazing place to visit both in the winter & in the spring. The unrestricted large view of the reservoir is breathtaking. During my visit, there was a gust of strong winds which made it difficult for people to operate the shops at the joint. Some people's goods even flew into the air. I hope that these stalls are moved away a little bit from the main attraction so that the calmness can be enjoyed.

The concrete arch dam is worth seeing. There is a good viewing point close to the parking area. During our visit, the water level was quite low as much of the snow had yet to melt.

Very beautiful and picturesque place against the mountains. It is an artificial body of water created in 1984. A reservoir is located 40 km from Tbilisi in the Dushet district, on the Aragvi River.
When the reservoir was opened, numerous historical monuments, temples and churches of the ancient city of Zhinwali were flooded. However, one of the churches underwater can be seen in the spring. At this time, the water level in the reservoir drops and out of the water protrudes the cross and dome of the temple and then the whole church.
The reservoir is in the form of an arch bent towards the south, where the rivers Aragwi Biała and Aragwi Pšavská fill each of their half vaults. From the centre, blocked by a 100-metre-high dam, flows the Araghvi, merging downstream with the Kura River and feeding the Georgian capital with water. In the north-western part of the reservoir, the Ananuri Fortress rises above a turquoise mirror, built to guard the ancient route from the north through the Dariala Gorge. It is now followed by the Georgian-Military Road connecting Vladikavkaz and Tbilisi, and everyone who drives along this route has the opportunity to enjoy the fascinating view.

I visited it with a tour on our way to Gudauri and then Kazbegi. The reservoir is not far from Tbilisi, we stopped in a place with great views. There, there are many vendors selling souvenirs or offering to take pictures of you with typical mountain clothes. Recommended to stop there if you are on your way anyway. Lenght of stop can be 5-10 minutes for photos.

We stopped by Jinvali water reservour before going to Gudauri a ski resort at the Caucasus Mountain range. The view of the dam was breathtaking. It is a spot on beauty.
There are few shops where you can get nice warm shoes, gloves and some souvenir before driving off to the mountains.

Сколько стоит экскурсия ...нас 2 взрослых и 2 детей 10 и 5 лет
Written 5 March 2019

hi.. I'm going to Tbilisi in the first week of December so do you recommend this place at this time of year?
Written 30 September 2018
Yes is a highly recommended place to visit in Georgia. If you don't have a car, most tours going to Jinvali reservoir and Ananuri fortress.

Hello how can i reach gergeti trinity church? Is there a tourisr bus or public transportation towards ananuri fortress and gergeti trinity church?
Written 17 June 2017
hi,
we used a driver to get there. Once on site, there are cars that take you all the way up to the church. the road is bumpy and therefore cars with drivers are at the big parking ready to take you all the way up. you can negotiate the price with them.
enjoy the ride and the serenity.
