This statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, who founded Tbilisi in the 5th century, stands proudly on a hilltop, gazing over old town. Worth the short hike up, not only to see the statue, but also view his view!

The first time I saw it was when I was riding the Airport Bus # 337 towards the city Center. I visited it the next day during my visit of Old Town,
I wondered what he did for Georgia to deserve such a prominent location, facing the area below, at the entrance of the Old Town. This statue is also located infront of an Orthodox Church.

This is the monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. He's set in the cathedral grounds at the top of the hill overlooking Tbilisi.

The monument of King Vakhtang Gorgasali definitely holds a lot of history behind it. However, for me, it's just a regular monument and doesn't affect me much emotionally. On the other hand, there is a really nice you from there and maybe it's worth visiting!

Just beautiful horseman statue of the King that's overlooking the old town. Right next to the Cathedral on the hill, this was one of our favorite monuments in Tbilisi!

On the towering cliff that rises on the banks of the Mtkvari (Kura) River stands an impressive monument of a rider on horseback waving his hand in salute. The rider in whose honor the monument was erected is the king Vakhtang Gorgasali who founded the city of Tbilisi and gave the city its name. Legend has it that during a pheasants hunting trip in the area the king's falcon together with the pheasant he captured fell into a spring and when the king pulled them out of the water, to his surprise he discovered that the pheasant and the falcon were cooked, because the water in the spring from which they were pulled out was boiling. In the language of the place Tbilisi means “The place of hot water”. The impressive statue is located in the courtyard of the Metekhi Cathedral adjacent to the edge of the cliff. Great views are seen from this location, in any direction you turn, both during the day and especially in the afternoons and evenings for amazing sunset photos, if you were lucky.

Right on a cliff's edge at the courtyard of "Metekhi Church", an equestrian statue will catch your attention! This is "Vakhtang I Gorgasali", King of Kartli (Eastern Georgia) between the 5th and 6th centuries and Tbilisi's founder. According to legends, one day King Vakhtang was hunting in the forests of his country, when his falcon chased a pheasant that fell from his beak into a hot water spring. The King and his servants were quite surprised when they saw steam coming out of the spring in such abundance. Immediately after, the King gave orders to build a city in this site and named it "Tbilisi" - the "site of warm springs"! Amazing legends of medieval times ... King Vakhtang I Gorgasali has been credited with the foundation of Tbilisi and many other towns, castles and monasteries, Since the Middle Ages, he is one of the most popular figures of the Georgian history as a warrior, King and statesman. The "Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church" canonized him as "Saint Vakhtang Gorgasali, the holy and right-believing King of Georgia". His granite equestrian statue was inaugurated in 1967, by Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli, and overlooks Tbilisi and its Mtkvari River. Bring your cameras, great pictures await you! Enjoy!

The equestrian statue of the founder of the city stands on a pedestal in the courtyard of the Metekhi church. The King is depicted sitting on a horse on the banks of the Kura river overlooking the old town on the other bank. One of his hands is raised as if wishing his followers or waiting for the return of his falcon (which as per the local legend) led to the formation of the city.
The statue is easily visible from the old town and is easily accessible. As a monument to the founder of the city, it is definitely a must see. It is also a great photo-spot overlooking the river.

Very nice church but honestly as many as other churces in Georgia. It seems otherwise quite special place with their own rituals. And as it is on the rock, it is better seen from far away then from there.
