This is at the top of the hill at the eastern end of the CBD. For a cathedral it appears to be a very simple building from a distance, but when you get close you realise the beauty. We didn't see inside as it was closed.

Well worth going in to see the Cathedral. Most of it was closed for renovations when we were there, but we could go into the main interior.

It looked pretty grand up on the hill so stopped in for a look around. There is a bit of work going on with repairs but the peace, quiet and calmness is always worth a few minutes away from everything else. Enjoy.......

Greetings,
This Cathedrale was a haven, quiet, restful, and overlooking the city and the sea. This was a comfort knowing that my Grandfather had stood in this Cathedral, sailed into the port of Noumea many times and grateful that the Mariners were thankful themselves, so much so that they contributed to the original building. So much is given to the today however at times, quiet reflection can be just as important no matter where you are. Walk up those steps even if you do not go in... you will understand what I mean.

We arrived at Noumea, capital of New Caledonia as part of our 43 day Maasdam cruise circling Japan to Sydney, Australia. After docking at the commercial port, we disembarked to the provided bus for 1 km south to the new Cruise Terminal.
We passed the Noumea Town Museum and the Church of Immaculate Conception, walking south to this bold Catholic Cathedral, the seat of the Archdiocese since 1966, where Sunday services were just ending. From the street below, a set of zig zag steps accessed the facade dominated by its twin stone bell and clock towers. Inside, our focus was drawn up from the dark benches to the white arched ceiling highlighted by a tracery of delicate gold arches that lead to the altar and circular ambulatory.
We descended to pass a tall totem pole and the marketplace before returning to the Visitor Center Bus back to the Maasdam.
Productive morning in this capital of 180,000.

Beautiful old church on the top of the hill (although it's not that steep).
Joan of Arc statue is unusual and some excellent stained glass.
Not very touristy at all and one of the few sights around the city centre really.

No gift shop, no beggars, no people thrusting leaflets into your hands, no tourists (non cruise ship day). It was a really pleasant experience and well worth the short trek up the hill. Not a real tourist attraction as such, but great to see a working Cathedral that just gets on with its own business.

There is a bonus of views out to sea as you exit the main door.
