- Radix7Sydney, Australia204 contributionsVery well worth spending time hereWe enjoyed our long morning spent here. A fairly short bus ride from the city (though at 45-minute intervals so check the return timetable too). It is essentially a very attractive and interesting botanical garden with many large cages for birds from New Caledonia and elsewhere, and more (even lemurs!). Well signposted but their map helps in weaving around the many paths. It would be a great pity, we thought, to visit Noumea without taking the time to stroll, look and relax in this park. On a weekday it was nice to see how much local primary school parties were enjoying it too!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 September 2023
- JoanneLake Mary, Florida2,105 contributionsa hidden gemI did not have the greatest expectations for this Park, but I was very pleasantly surprised. There are miles of paved concrete trails with all sorts of large bird enclosures. Most places where our group went was under shaded trees, so it was a perfect walk. We got to see the famous cagous being fed at about 2pm. There were masses of people all around trying to get pictures, but after a while people moved so everyone could get a picture. The birds were almost tame and just calmly waited for food. There was one disabled female who got her leg damaged by a rival male, but she still was taking care of her young. We also saw crows, owls, lemurs, white peacocks, bats, birds of prey, and loads of different birds. In 2 hours our tour group saw maybe 20% of the park, so if you have a full-day, there is a lot to see. Most of the signs are in French and English. Restrooms are clean and water fountains available. A definite hidden gem.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 January 2024

A pleasant place for a stroll with a range of animal exhibits. The highlight, of course, being the magi and that pout on a wonderful display for us. Probably the only place you are likely to see these wonderful birds on a visit to New Caledonia. Seniors entry fees apply.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 February 2024

Really enjoyed it! It was one of the more unusual zoos/ botanic gardens I have visited. It has some big advantages, and a few 'room for improvement ' areas.
Loved the chance to learn more about the native wildlife and plants. I agree with previous reviewers that some cages seemed too small and some animals lonely. But I loved how much real vegetation and privacy spave they all had. The native bird displays were good and quite a few of them. Bats were disappointing, only one species and that not a native?
The vivarium needed a lot of work.
It was odd seeing birds like cockatiel s and budgies in a zoo.
Loved the extensive Cagu runs, I watched three adults and a juvenile, undisturbed, for a while.
Very few visitors, and mostly (I think) locals. So it is very much a local park, which is great.
I struggled to understand what they were doing with the botanicals... there were just random vegetation around the place, some with tags, some not. It did not feel like a botanical garden, though I got a bit out of it.
There was some English, but not everything was translated. I have no French, but could figure out most things with my Latin from uni days.
As an educational tool for non French speaking tourists it needs a lot of work. However, everyone was lovely, above and beyond helpful, even when we had no common language.
I loved how extensive the grounds were! Huge old growth that looks like it had never been cleared.

Not too far out of town by car. It's quite hiily and some long but pleasant walks between areas. There are a lot of bird cages rather than animals. The most spectacular birds have to be the white peacocks roaming freely around. They look like a firework when they open their plumage.
I'm not keen on seeing animals in cages at the best of times and many looked bored with nothing to keep them amused. While you get chance to see animals up close that you wouldn't normally see, it does make you sad and kinda wish you could let them out.

My partner and I did the segway tour with a few other people and it was amazing and fun. Nobody on the tour had been on a segway before and we all got some time practicing on them under instruction before the tour started. The guides were super helpful and fun and very informative. This was a great time and I would defiantly do it again if I'm ever in noumea again. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

What a beautiful park perched up high in the hills overlooking the coast of Noumea. What a shame it resembles an outdated zoo that one may have visited during the 70s. Exotic animals locked in cages. Some solitary and without any enrichment. What a depressing pitiful existence for these lovely creatures. Hopefully someone has a vision to turn this into the beautiful botanical garden it could be with wildlife native to New Caledonia free to come and go as they please. Time to rehome those exotics to sanctuaries.

Not a proper Zoo but good if you are a bird watcher. Spent an enjoyable half day walking through the park. The best way to see a Cagou with lots on display. Great gardens and aviaries . Very reasonable admission price too. Good for half day

We were recommended to check out the parc from some tourists we met and we're so glad we decided to check it out. The park offers a few walks you can do around the park and check out the animals along the way. There are peacock roaming around everywhere that were unbothered by us, which was cool to see.
It took us around 3 hours to walk the entire park and see everything. We got to see a bunch of native wildlife and learn a lot along the way.
It's a great place to take kids and walk around and enjoy the grounds.

I was in Noumea for one day, coming in on the P and O Pacific Pearl. When I got off, about 8.15am, I walked up to the FOL lookout, then to the St Jospehs Cathedral and then down to the local markets by the Bay, arriving about 9.30am. Then headed to the Parc Forrister. After doing research before arriving, we took a taxi from town to the Parc Forrister. Local buses do not go to the Parc, and the hop on hop off bus or le petit train was very limited in timing and would have worked out more expensive for us as we only wanted to do the Parc and the Aquarium. All the reviews I had read said that taxis in Noumea were expensive. These reviewers obviously were not comparing the prices to the scandalous P and O shore shore tour prices!!! Our taxi to the Parc was 880 FPF (about $15 NZ, which was then split 3 ways) and entry to the Parc was 400FPF or 200 FPF for those over 60 years (so roughly $6 or $3 NZ). Hence the Parc trip was $13-$16 ea vs the P and O $65 Oz ea!!! Much cheaper!!! The taxi was easy to get, you cannot hail down a taxi in Noumea, so if coming off the ship it’s about a 5 min walk to the taxi rank on the corner of Rue D’Austerlitz and Rue De Verdun. You can get a local map at the cruise ship terminal. While our drivers didn’t speak English, and my French is sketchy, we still could communicate enough. The Parc is only about 5km from town and it was lovely to see some of the island on the way up. The Parc opens at 10.15am. It was lovely to see that the locals frequented this attraction, and it really sold itself short on price. They could easily charge more, but I expect the low rate allowed the locals to flock here. I would definitely go to the Parc again. While I do not agree with standard zoos, the enclosures all seemed large enough for the birds and were incredibly clean. It is well signposted, and a lovely hill amble. We spent an hour in the parc, only doing the native on the left (exotics are located on the right). We were going at a very slow pace, and stopped to sit and watch the birds quite a bit, so both sides of the Parc could easily have been done in 1.5hours if you went at a steady pace. It was amazing to get so close to the local Kagu/Cagou, which was such a lovely bird – a blue/grey flightless bird, with an almost phoenix like head if it raised it’s feathers. Many of the review had said there was no food or drink available at the parc. The was a cafe onsite, and served everything (we didn't need to eat there, but you could see it served a wide range of sandwiches, iceblocks and drinks). To get a return taxi, just ask at the main office (where you buy your tickets) and the staff are more than willing to call a taxi. Our taxi took about 10 mins to arrive (about the time it would take to get from town) – which allowed for a sit down. Each taxi has a meter – so you can see the price, and the standard charges are stuck on the windows, so you shouldn’t be surprised. As a single female I would definitely catch a taxi in Noumea again – it was safe and was NOT expensive compared to shore tour prices. I had my parents with me, who had been to Noumea twice, and said they wouldn’t have gone by taxi if I hadn’t arranged it. Now they have tried it, they would use a taxi again. From the parc we went to the Aquarium by taxi (about 18km/20 mins) which was 1650FPF, but a return trip to town would have been cheaper. After the Aquarium we went to THE most fabulous French patisserie, Boulangerie Marais at 21 rue Eugene Porcheron. After living in Europe, this was like walking into a proper French bakery and it had the prices for each item, so there was no chance they could make up their own price for tourists (don’t be fooled by reviews saying Le Fournil Gourmand is good – they ripped both my parents and myself off, we paid nearly three times as much for a croissant here than we did at Boulangerie Marais). Also on Eugene Porcheron, is an exquisite French Chocolatier – Chocolat Morand. We then wandered through town, shopped at the supermarket opposite the ship, and were back on the ship at 2pm.

We visited the Park because we wanted to try a Segway. After some training the group of 8 set off along the trails. For a group of mixed ages and abilities we all handled the machines well.
The guides introduced the various animals and birds on the way round which added an extra level of interest though it was the Segway experience we went for and we were extremely satisfied by it.

Yes we took a bus from the city centre near the library (not the buses near the market). It is worth checking the times of buses back to the city as they are not all that frequent. Bus details at taneo web site

Would you know if we can buy tickets for the zoo online at any website?

Hi there, yes you can book online but I don’t think there’s an advantage price wise and if weather is not good you might find it better to decide on the day?
