This is an old market that is filled with a variety of products from live chickens to beautiful saris. The stalls are closely placed, and the aisles are heavily congested. If you are a newcomer, hold on to your purse; if you are with a local, let him or her carry your money. Wear fake jewelry. When you leave the market, be careful of your surroundings. People try to sell you things as you walk, and they follow you. If you are looking for bargains on local items, stay in the market. Be vigilant. Visit the market during day time hours.

It's always interesting to visit a bustling, colourful market. This one does not disappoint.
Be very careful, though, as the surrounding area is notorious for violent muggings, even though it's close to City Hall and the Bank of Guyana. Avoid going in the evenings (of course), and weekends when there isn't much people around the backstreets. Trouble will come looking for you.

Nice little place for shopping but not for tourist, they can spot you a mile away.

Be careful lot of pickpockets and persons looking to con you. They were pest and were offering broken jewellery probably stolen for sale.

They were a major deterrent from venturing into the market to shop.

There was also no security around or any police presence for that matter.

Market was also very dirty, did not have proper walkways.

Also as with most of Guyana no store takes credit cards. Nearly everywhere is cash which increases the risk of theft.

You can see the building standing tall from all over the city! There are so many things to look at in this Market. There is everything from clothing to Cell phones, food, and toys. We ate at one of the little stands- it had the best doughnuts I have ever had. Outside under awnings there are veggie vendors, while inside is more the clothes and other things. The people that work there are able to tell you how to get to what you are looking for if you don't want to take the time and get lost. There is the option to go up the tower, we didn't get to do that, but were told that you are able to. One thing that I would recommend is shopping around, and then deciding on where you want to get things. Unless it is something that is clearly one of a kind. The prices are vast. Another thing is they do, for the most part, take American money, just remember the conversion rate so you don't get ripped off. It is a great place to immerse yourself in everything Georgetown,

These markets are pretty much the same as any large markets in Caribbean Islands, South and Central America, and this is where the essence of a country is found. I found it relatively easy to navigate, talk to stall holders and had no issues with pickpockets, a few people asked outright for money. I felt safe walking around alone.

I took heaps of photos (asking the stall owners if it was ok), the only ones were the fishermen out the back who wanted money for the task.

I ate at a Creole place along the left side heading towards the back, best curries and a nice sitting area above the stall, very friendly place and cheap, a curry and a soda was G$700 (US$3.50)

Like all busy areas wether it's the local markets or the local supermarket, have some common sense with your valuables.

If you're looking for a place to be immersed in the flavor and vibe of Guyanese culture then Stabroek Market is certainly one place to do it and catch it all. The sounds, the smells, and the views. It's centrally located and easily reached by taxi, foot or minibus. Food, clothes, jewelry, pharmaceuticals are all readily available. It's close to other attractions as well. A word of caution - watch out for the traffic and hang on to your belongings - it's very crowded and there are some incidents with criminal elements. Stay focused and enjoy.

Very busy market square where the locals shop. Fresh meat, fruits and vegetables. Some might find it too congested due to the numerous bus parks but it is worth visiting just for the experience and to pick up local fruits. Prices are better than the supermarkets here.
Just don't wear any valuable jewellery and guard your money. Due to the large crowds pickpockets mingle with the crowd. They usually snatch and run away if the spot gold jewellery or an easy pick wallet.
