Our cruise ship stopped at this island and I'm glad they did. I walked the entire island and loved it, the natural setting and the history. A French penal colony infamous for their brutal care of inmates imprisoned behind the walls. Lots of buildings to...More

I am not sure how to write a review for this. You can't call it an "attraction". It's a historical relic, which has been allowed to decay. Many of the buildings are in a poor state so you have to use your imagination about what...More

Nice Island an hour distance from Kourou by boat. Builidings of old French Prison are not in a best shape but you can go through them and you can swim in Island Bath. For some moment you ask yourself what is wrong about that island...More

Interesting place - was a French Penal Colony - France shipped their prisoners there - only about 10% ever made it back! Buildings are dilapidated - (of course, with time, and humidity etc) - made famous by the movie "Papillion" - not much there, -...More

This place is fascinating from a historical standpoint but it’s also a fun trip. It’s really a group of three islands: Royal Island, Devil’s Island and St. Joseph’s Island. The trip starts with a fun catamaran ride out to Islands. It’s all open air, sun...More

Beautiful island with lush tropical greenery. Derelict penal buildings. Very hot, especially in the penal cells but a nice breeze in the path around the island. The shop was fairly useless, with only French spoken, no nice postcards - a wasted potential shopping opportunity.

The French have made little attempt to make a visitor welcome. Signage is poor and in bad shape. Facilities are basic . This is not my first visit but it will certainly be my last.
