Our tour group had one hour lunch break in this neighborhood where we had choice of restaurants and local foods. Older buildings were either two or three stories either brick or colorful facades.
We had lunch including meat lasagna, empanadas and a carafe of vine for merely $10.-

My mom and I visited the Tapas cafe here a couple weeks ago and afterwards spent some time walking around the area. It feels very trendy and hip, you saw a lot of young people out and about and definitely feels local. Not many tourists. However, we didn't really see anything to do besides eat and bar hop, so after walking around for a few blocks, we turned back and got an uber out. I think if you're with friends or on a date, it's a nice spot to hang out and enjoy a good time, but didn't offer much for me.

La Macarena is a small middle class neigborhood east of Independence park and just north of La Candelaria. Further towards the north there is (working class) Perseverancia with its food market.

The area on a hill slope is popular among Bogotanos because of its location in central Bogota close to the skyscrapers in the centro internacional as well as to the historic center. If you are able to find an apartment in La Macarena it would save you a lot of travel time.

It looks like the neighborhood is developing into a service center to the well-to-do with nice restaurants and different specialized food outlets. Personally I think nearby Park Way in La Soledad is more pleasant as it is more spacious and easier to walk around as it is flat.

La Macarena is a great neighborhood to explore in Bogota that's a bit more residential with upscale bars and restaurants all around. Some of the best food in this area of the city can be found among the hills of this neighborhood close by to the National Museum - it should not be missed!

La Macarena is one of my favourite areas in Bogota. Its close to La Candelaria (walking distance) and has an old charm with a slightly hippy vibe. Here you will find cool cafes, yoga studio, excellent restaurants, book shops. Unlike some the newer parts of the city you won't find modern apartment blocks or shopping centres. La Macarena comes alive a night but during the day you might wonder why this hilly district is so popular.

Rafael took a group of us on a La Macarena Gourmet tour. We went to four restaurants. The food and beverages were delicious. Trying several local specialties was so much fun:). We enjoyed exploring this area and experiencing the culture and food of this beautiful area of Bogota.

Filled with colour and narrow streets this barrio is worth a meander through. We noticed a LOT of vegetarian and vegan places in this area and imagine it will soon become THE place for tourists to go. Explore now before it becomes spoiled.

Lots of great art and colour as well as artists residences all around the neighbourhood.
