We drove to Palca Canyon and admired the views. However the mountain was mostly covered in cloud which was disappointing. Hike is possible in the area. However we only spent time looking at the views and enjoying the quiet.

A nice half day trip. No organized tour needed. Take a taxi or a uber that can drop you at the entrance (dirt road leading down from Uni village, doable with any car). Walk through the canyon in about 1h. Pick-up on the other side in Palca. Paid 250bs with uber from central La Paz. Doable with public transport too, you will have to walk 2h+. See picture where i marked until where car can bring/pick-up (maps.me)

Fantastic place! And without people...
An undiscovered tourist destination about 20 km from La Paz, which you will never forget.

Compared to the Torotoro canyon in central Bolivia or the Colca canyon in Peru this is rather small but in its own right it is a very nice place and still impressive. You can walk through the canyon and not see another person. If lucky you will see the alqamari, the Aymara name for the mountain caracara, a species of falcon deemed a sign of good fortune. The canyon is free, and good to do concurrently in a day with the Valle des Ánimas. I did it with a guided tour via my hotel, which takes away the hassle of unpredictable public transport.

One of the most beautiful places for trekking, with a great view of the Illimani.

This is a magic place 15-20 minutes by car from the centre of La Paz. Take the car and go to the Uni village. There you can start walk down and go trough the canyon. There is the road (possible go by car - truck). There is no road on the Google maps, but in real it is. ;-) It can takes 2 hours. Then you arrive to the Palca town. There are some markets and restaurants.
The best way is to have some driver, which pick you up in the Palca.
