My visit was very quick, there wasn't a lot to cover anyway. I've visited many local markets, I was hoping for something amazing, but it was basic. You have to visit, but don't expect to find something amazing.

We spent a good hour wandering around the souk but I found it a little disappointing compared to others I had visited (eg Doha). There were huge volumes of fabrics (scarves etc), but next to nothing in the way of spices and we couldn't even find anywhere selling dates. The most interesting alley we found was selling all sorts of... More

I spent about two hours aimlessly wandering around although didn't end up buying anything. It's just a great way to spend some time people watching particularly the locals shopping for gold. There are some great local shops here, although I was there at 7pm on a Monday night and once you get further and further into the Souk, not all... More

The souk is tucked away on the narrow alleys just up from the corniche in Muttrah, and it has a great variety of items on sale. Good shopping for incense and spices, and also very good bargaining opportunities on nice textiles. Don't go to aggressive on the bargaining though, this is not a place where your first bid should be... More

We were on a walking tour organised by the Celebrity Constellation cruise ship. Part of it gave us free time to wander the souq (market) and we really enjoyed ourselves. Yes, the local people wanted to sell us their wares but they weren't in-your-face hasslers and readily accepted a smile, friendly eye-contact and a polite 'No thank you.' As we... More

Historic souk with interesting architecture -- make sure to look at the ceiling of the old stores inside and around the souk. Our guide informed us that a lot of the touristy souvenirs are actually imported from India. Very inexpensive frankincense but the quality is uncertain.

Similar products from previous souks I've been but quality is not as good...vendors don't give much discount even if you haggle as much as you can...

Simply put, skip it. Overpriced for touristy trinkets along the main street. I casually picked up a pair of silver earrings and was told that it cost 25 OMR for it. It wasn't even a fancy pair of earrings! If you are really keen on getting something, venture into the smaller lanes where you'll find better local spices and fabric... More

Entertaining if you're a shopper. Lots of things to find like Turkish and Indian things. Silk, inlayed boxes, lots of shawls, hanging lamps, frankincense, and souvenirs. Bought embroidered cotton blouses from India for US$10. Sat at the outdoor cafe (across the water) and had one of the best burgers ever! Tasted like kofta and was just 50 omani cents (about... More
