When walking along Arabian Gulf Street, also known as Corniche, I passed by this building from past days in a city of mainly highrises. Unfortunately it was closed, so all I could do was to look at the exterior of this white and blue house, constructed for a local merchant in 1870, and then to read about it, especially when the place served as the British Political Agency. The best known person to occupy this job in Kuwait had been H.R.P.Dickson, a diplomat's son, who was born and grew up in the Arab world. He used to live in this house from 1929 until his death in 1959, leaving his wife Violet, who continued staying in this building until the Iraqi invasion in 1990. A famous guest in this house had been Frey Stark in 1937, traveller and author of several books on the Middle East, a subject also Dickson wrote about, especially the Beduins. Restored after the damage caused by the invasion, the Kuwaiti National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters took over and turned it into a museum about the Dickson couple and about the relations between the British Empire and Kuwait.
