Saudi Arabia is still building out its tourism infrastructure and it is EXTREMELY difficult to book tours from the US currently. Accordingly, we choose to book with Saudi Arabia Tours when transiting through Jeddah for a cruise. There were definite pros and cons.
The company does have decent information about their tours on their site along with the ability to book online; communication was mostly prompt and I appreciated their flexibility to change the date of our tour after we had to board our cruise early than anticipated. They did confirm pickup and I communicated with the guide via Whatsapp before my arrival; he met us right on time directly outside port customs.
However, the guide was really more of a driver. He was a good driver and very obliging, but his English was not that strong and he wasn't able to provide much information about what we did see (the International City Museum, Al Balad Market, Al Shafi Mosque and the Corniche) or make any suggestions about what else we should see given that Al Balad was mostly closed and we could not enter the mosque. I will say that he recommended an excellent and affordable restaurant for lunch.
Given that we paid close to $1,000 for our party of 3, this was not the level of service we were expecting. The tour did include admission to the museum but otherwise did not offer much over booking a driver for a 7-hour day. I realize that tourism is still quite new in Saudi Arabia and it may cost a premium to book from the US but this seemed a bit steep. Overall, I think you can feel confident that Saudi Arabia Tours is a safe option to book, but you may want to do your own research around local sites and history in case a fully trained guide is not available.

We went here for the quad bike and to unwind from the busy lifestyle. I enjoyed the quadbike though its a little bit dangerous when we were uphill. A bit dirty because they dont have proper garbage disposal and the rest room also is not clean. The view from above is expectacular. On the way also to the red sand you can see nice rock formation. The quadbike rent range from 25-70

The place is not advisable for solo travelers. You will enjoy it most with your friends. The quad bike “dabbab” rent is about 40 SR (price depends on season i guess) but you can always negotiate. Note to females, do not go too far and don’t drive alone as it could be unsafe for you. You can have your friends or family along or race with you.
There are options also, you can choose the elevated area or the obstacle course (like the places for motor cross). The elevated area is a bit crowded yet you can always drive away from the crowd. You just have to be careful of the hidden cliffs in the obstacle course and be quick to evade displaced rocks along the way too as it could cause accidents specially if you drive fast.
One of the obvious bad side is the litters so it you travel there. Please make sure not to leave your wastes. Another advise, empty your bladders before traveling as it will be hard for you to find a hygienic place to dispose your urine.

this place is the best place in Riyadh if you want to go out and hang out with friends and families.. it surely is sandy, but i must say- it's all worth it!! the view from the top, the ride going up and down, the fear from off-loading yourself from the ATV trying to reach on the top, the way you fight yourself holding on tight on the ATV while rocking yourself on the fine sand and controlling everything in between just to be on the top and see the perfect view of "sand over sand".. it's just so fascinating!! and i love it!

Had been to Red sands a fewtimes and each time i go there I enjoy it a lot..Go with with a lot of friends or family to enjoy a evening in the desert. Take your own food as nothing is available anywhere nearby. Best time to visit is in the evenings as the weather will be cool. Be sure that you will come back home with a hell lot of sand in your pockets and shoes.

The place is around 80KM from Riyadh. The road is good and easy to find using google maps. When you reach there you can hire a bike to roam the sand dunes and can take some pictures. The 90 CC bikes we hired got stuck some times up hill and I had to get off and push it. But all in all it was good experience and we enjoyed.
There were a couple of toilets available but not properly maintained and water had to be taken from outside. There isn't any shaded place available to rest so plan early morning or afternoon.

We went on a day-trip from Riyadh. The problem is that there is basically no information, no website, nowhere to call to find anything out. Our group wanted to go camel-riding. We were told by some locals you could do that at Red Sands. So we rented a bus and off we went.
Upon arrival, we found that we'd need to ride ATVs to get to the camels. Fine... but the guys who rented from us gave absolutely no safety demonstration, no safety check, no helmets, nothing to protect us... and the worst almost happened. One of the women in our group got her shawl caught in the axel and was yanked off the vehicle, which then ran her over. She's lucky it broke her neck.
So please learn from our mistake: If you go here (or ATV'ing ANYWHERE), DO NOT WEAR FLOWING, LOOSE CLOTHING LIKE SHAWLS OR SCARVES.
To make it worse, at the end of our trip, they tried to say the rate they quoted us was the hourly rate, not the total agreed upon rate, leading to an unpleasant argument.

If you can get out into the red dunes and get away from the pesky ATVs / quad bikes and mounds of garbage everywhere, then you will find miles and miles of pristine gorgeous red sand desert. Deflate your tires and drive into the desert for a couple of kilometres. Have a picnic (and DO NOT leave your garbage), hike up the dunes. Truly something not to be missed.

HI Santhosh,
Thank you ofr the review.
What do you think was the most affordable option you used when going there.
I found some groups that do it for SAR 300 per person , but that's a bit expensive.

Hi!
Is there a company that will set up a trip for a group of people? Pick up from hotel, ATV rides and return to hotel??
Written 13 November 2019
Hi you will need to bargain and it depends on the size of the quad bike you want. We went for the bigger bikes which I believe were 250cc as you need the extra power to get up the dunes, there are some real big ones, we ended up paying 150 SAR for two bikes for one hour. I don’t know how busy it gets at the weekend as we went on a week day and were the only two people there, it was great. There are loads of rental places to get bikes from. Enjoy.

He Guys, we are intending to have a trip to Riyadh Red Sands dunes with families ( Wives and Children ).
is there any private Camps for rental near this area ?
Last month we went to a region called Banban outside Riyadh and we rented a private camp ( three tents+bathroom...) and from there we also got to ride ATV's.

Hi,
what is the preferable time to go there? and what should we take esp. if we have kids
thank you🤗
Written 13 February 2018
Hello,
The best time to be there is between 7-10 o'clock in the morning, even in the winter. The sand do get heated up during mid-day.
If you are traveling with kids, bring light snacks and drinks as there are no restaurants or convenience store nearby.
If you plan to have a picnic, bring a beach umbrella or a canopy or even a bed linen for a shade which you can tie at the back/side of your vehicle. A rope will come in handy as the place tends to be windy. there are no cottages in the area.
Bring a gallon of clean water or more depending on the size of your group for handwashing. Bring sanitizers, wipes and paper towels.
Bring a change of clothes/extra shirt if you dont like feeling dusty after you enjoy the ATV ride.
Sunblock (depends on your preference to sun exposure. A hat with a string or any sun protection of your choice.
Wear sunglasses/shades to protect your eyes. Kids can wear goggles.
Im being over protective, I think. But getting sand in your eyes will spoil the fun.
I didnt see any scorpion during my visit and i guess the noise from the ATVs scare them away but I will still suggest the kids wear a closed footwear and pants with comfortable fit that covers their entire legs.
I hope it helps. Have fun.

Hi, how to arrange hiking here? Are there your operators on spot?

This location is mostly for quad bike rentals, not so much for hiking..

1-Take Riyadh-Makkah highway…..pass down through the cut escarpment.
2-Cross the old makkah road…go straight…..Now you are in Muzamiyah area.
3-Cross the 2nd over head bridge(exit-6). you’ll see a petrol/gas station on your left, you have to reach there after making a U-turn.
4-Make a U-turn from the 3rd overhead bridge.
5-Now you face Makkah-Riyadh direction, look for a link road at your right sign-posted (Arabic-Lake Gharara) just before the petrol/gas station.
6-Take this link road, going zigzag for about 6-7 kms through resthouses surrounded by sand dunes.
7-At bout 6-7 kms look for a desert track at your left…..take the track.
8- After about 500meters you’ll see what you were looking for…….if on 2wheel drive…..stick to the track.
