The area where the desert begins is a bit messy as plastic bottles and bags are thrown all over. Its an eye-sore.

Otherwise, the natural desert doesn't need any description. Its vast, its hot and its mysterious.

Visited the Thumama desert to rent 4 wheeler bike to drive in the dunes. Haggling is possible. Paid 100SAR for a 1-hour drive. Although it is fine, the dessert is quite polluted with plastic rubbish from all the picnics that takes place there. You also need to be careful as cars too are driving fast in the dunes.

Being at the desert for the first time is Saudi Arabia , was an amazing experience.
I’m coming from America and this is something that I will always remember. Great cold weather , friendly locals, and a beautiful fun environment!

I will definitely come here again !!

Al thumama park is a reserved territory north of riyadh. Its not typically a sand dune type of desert . But the mountains, vallies, and hills create an amazing sight seeing that changes during the day from sun angel to angel.
You can rent tent that are lighted in night time with toilets facilities that are hidden inside dunes.

When I visited Riyadh for official works, I wanted to visit the tourist spots nearby on weekends. When I asked hotel staffs about what are the places to visit in Riyadh, they could not find an answer. Later I realized after talking to various people who are residing there for long time, that people do not visit the city for tourism. Anyway I checked google map satellite views and found couple of red sand deserts outside the city. One of those was Thumama. Before reaching Thumama I found some camels are kept inside a fenced area. That was my only sight of camels in Riyadh. When I reached Thumama I found red sands and lot of cars are frantically driven on that sandy desert. So some people go there to have some fun. Anyway I found the place not safe for me to walk on the sands. So I kept watching the activities from roadside and came back after some time.

The desert itself stretches over miles through Riyadh city and even beyond but one has to generate their own activity there to have fun. It can be sand drifting, quad biking, cooking, doing BBQ or even a small picnic. More people, more fun!

This is a full on activty area ranging from horse riding, theme parks, desert picnics, 4 wheeleers, drifting, lots of fast food outlets and Birlilla vans. Istihara's and tents can be rented out and provide a good fun experience for the family...especially in the winter which is this time of the year. It can be really crazy but the younger members of the family love it.
My tip if you should visit....... leave only footprints - take your rubbish home.
