- Pchan3,188 contributionsUnmissable, but definitely too touristyClassic place where dozens of buses continuously arrive, unloading hundreds of tourists at the same time, with the result that a place that should be sacred becomes an incredible bedlam. With all those people it is impossible to see everything clearly and savor the original spirit of the place. Maybe that's why it didn't particularly impress me. Of course, the view of the Promised Land touches you for its symbolic charge, but from a landscape point of view you can see much more fascinating views simply by driving on the roads that connect the places of interest, especially on the Kingsroad. But I believe that Mount Nebo is a must on a trip to Jordan, even if just for a half hour stop. Maybe better at strategic times, for example very early or very late. It only costs 2 JD to enter, but I just don't understand why all the Jewish visiting places don't join the Jordan Pass.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 January 2024
- Tab WCincinnati, Ohio915 contributionsHistoric SignificanceAfter visiting Madaba, we went to Mount Nebo, which is part of the Abarim mountain range. This location is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death. The view from the summit provides a panorama of the West Bank across the Jordan River valley. The city of Jericho is usually visible from the summit, as is Jerusalem on a very clear day. According to the Bible (Deuteronomy), Moses ascended Mount Nebo, in the land of Moab (today in Jordan), and from there he saw the Land of Canaan (the Promised Land), which God had said he would not enter; Moses then died there. Mount Nebo is also mentioned in the Bible when the prophet Jeremiah hid the tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant in a cave there. A serpentine cross sculpture atop Mount Nebo was created by Italian artist Gian Paolo Fantoni. It is symbolic of the miracle of the bronze serpent invoked by Moses in the wilderness and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 February 2024
- christine nNew York City, New York162 contributionsMtNeboI was surprised by how beautiful this spot is. The church is not much to look at from the outside, but the mosaics inside are beautiful. And to stand on the spot where Moses was shown the promised land is amazing. The views over the Jordan valley are amazing. Definitely worth the trip.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 February 2024
- amg14401 contributionsBeautiful setting with great mosaicsBeautiful site. Nice spot to overlook the Holy Land. Unfortunately we went on an overcast day but it was still a very nice view. There are various sculptures outdoors & olive trees, a lovely setting. The inside of the church is very beautiful, there are several large mosaics some of which are displayed on the walls. The lighting in the church is very good so one can appreciate the beauty of the mosaics,I enjoyed the mosaics here more than the ones in Madaba where the sites have poor lighting.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2024
- BravoleoGrosseto, Italy667 contributionsMystical...Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. It has a beautiful view over the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem and also exudes a certain spirituality. In addition to the supposed tomb of Moses, there is also the olive tree planted by John Paul II during his pilgrimage. Unfortunately the reconstruction done by the Franciscans is terribly modern and somewhat disfigures its charm. Entry not cheap for 3 Jod (not included in the jordan pass)Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 February 2024
- adv1977Turin, Italy749 contributionsSuggestiveMemorial to Moses, the biblical character known for having received the tablets of the law from God on another mountain, in Sinai. However, this mountain is also associated with his figure because it would seem that from here he was able to see the entire territory of Israel, "the Promised Land", before dying. In fact, the view that can be enjoyed from this mountain is truly remarkable and on some particularly clear days you can see as far as Jerusalem (about 50 km), but the biblical event evidently has a supernatural dimension. Currently the entire mountain is looked after by the Franciscan friars who purchased the entire mountain at the beginning of the last century. The church on the summit plateau can be visited and is very interesting for the large number of Christian archaeological finds, such as mosaics, columns and various objects from the early Middle Ages, coming from all over the area.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024
- lucianacordobaCordoba, Argentina10,230 contributionsThe passage of MosesBeautiful place to visit, place where Moses saw the promised land. With beautiful views of the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley. The mosaics found and restored in the chapel are worth admiring. You can also see part of what the Monastery was, everything dates back to the 6th century AD. Place rebuilt by the Franciscans and visited by Pope John Paul II.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024
- Eric GNeoules, France507 contributionsBiblical placeThis place is a promontory on the Jordan Valley, a place where Moses ended his life at 120 years old. A place very well highlighted by the Franciscans. A bronze cross at the belvedere level. Let us imagine here the fullness of the view of the time. Visible from the viewpoint: Amman, Dead Sea, Jericho, Jerusalem, Sea of Galilee.......Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2024
- Robert D5,304 contributionsBeautiful mosaics and viewsMount Nebo was where Moses saw the Promised Land after wandering in the desert. The Franciscan monastery there has a Memorial to Moses. As you enter the site, you see "The Book of Love among Nations Monument", a sculpture by Vicenzo Bianchi, dedicated in 2000 to Pope John Paul II after his visit here. Continue walking until you get to the viewpoint. Admire the view that Moses saw. (It was a bit hazy on the day I visited so it was difficult to see Jerusalem.) Inside the Memorial of Moses are many beautiful mosaics. There is also a small museum.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 April 2024

Immediately on arrival I was struck by the peace - it's somewhere you can just sit and appreciate where you are. The views are fantastic and the mosaic inside the chapel impressive. If you are lucky you will see one of the Franciscan monks who look after the place. The loos were also the best I came across in Jordan!Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 April 2024

Came here as part of a church-sponsored tour group and loved it because this place fed both the history geek and proud Christian in me. The religious order that runs it has done a marvelous job integrating the historical and religious aspects of the site.
Inside the otherwise unremarkable church are whole sections dedicated to displaying the fantastic Byzantine mosaics discovered under earlier churches built on the site. There is also a glass covered floor cut-out displaying the ancient but empty marble tomb constructed to commemorate the grave of Moses, who scripture says is buried nearby but whose grave has never been found. Outside, there are statues, markers, and various displays explaining what else has been found on site. Fascinating.
Oh, and my group was allowed to conduct a Holy Mass in the church - a very inspiring end to our day.
TIP: If you happen to visit when a Mass is underway, please stay and join those participating, even if you are not Catholic (note: at the end you can come forward to receive a blessing, but if you are not Catholic you can not receive the Eucharist). Those who joined our group seemed to be swept up in the joy of the moment with us and asked a lot of questions at the end. Catholics are happy to share.

Mount Nebo is supposedly the place from where Moses first saw the Promised Land. Today it houses a few modern sculptures and quite a few ancient relics. The grinding stone door of the ancient monastery, a memorial for Moses, some mosaics and a newly made Basilica of Moses are interesting points. The site entry is 2 JOD pp and it is not included in Jordan pass.

We went on a whim one afternoon because the weather was pleasant and sunny. Of course, this is the view of the “holy land,” but spend much time in Jordan outside of the green season and your view will mostly be a hazy one of dusty skies. But the view isn’t the real reason for visiting the site. Rather, the church and the mosaics it contains make for a better excuse. Hundreds of years old and well preserved, the works are incredible. It doesn’t hurt that the modern church makes for an excellent space for quiet reflection either.

Mt Nebo is believed to be the place where Moses climbed from the Valley of Moab and from where God showed him the Promised Land. It is also Moses resting place. We visited on a foggy morning, hence we could not see clearly across. However, we did enjoyed all the beautiful mosaics displayed inside the church.

Mount Nebo is around 35 km from Amman. It is said to be a place where Prophet Moses was granted a view of Promised land. Perhaps Prophet Moses died here but his exact burial place remains unknow. At the top of mount Nebo, there is a Moses Memorial church. You can't miss a serpentine cross made of bronze there. The serpentine depicting serpent taken by Moses in desert and the cross where Jesus was crucified. From the hill top, the view is magnificent. If you are there on a sunny day, you are overlooking river Jordan valley, dead sea, West Bank city of Jericho and distant hills of Jerusalem. The place closes for entry around 5pm, so you have to take care of opening times. It may be hard to get taxi there.

Christians and Jews are more likely to find this place moving, but everyone can appreciate the spectacular view. Art historians will find the mosaics fascinating. (These pictures were taken without a flash from a silent camera.) The modern art is fine, but the mosaics are masterworks and well worth the trip up the mountain if you enjoy that medium or have some spiritual connection to the site. Easy to get around, well-marked and recommended!

This beautiful location has been a place of spiritual pilgrimage since the time of the early Christians. Today, you can be witness to the same sights that Moses saw when God showed him the Promised Land. At an elevation of 2651 ft (808 m), on a clear day the panoramic view includes the Dead Sea, the Jordan River Valley, and in the distance, the hills of Jerusalem! The Moses Memorial Church, beautifully restored in 2016, dates to an original 6th century Byzantine Basilica whose foundations were a smaller 4th century church. The mosaics here are stunning, I think the best presented and preserved in Jordan. The Franciscans have owned and administered the property since 1932 and are responsible for the excavations and restoration of the church. Outstanding!

This memorial is maintained in a very good condition, has a peaceful atmosphere and amazing views.
It was interesting reading about the history of this place, looking at the different monuments and looking at the church with its old and very well preserved mosaics.
The little gift shop near the entrance had a very good selection of souvenirs and gifts for reasonable prices.
The entry ticket of 2JD seemed very reasonable as it was obvious that a lot of effort has been made in maintaining this place in a very good state.
Definitely worth a visit.

This is an historical site. The top of the mountain view offers an excellent overview of this whole historical region landscape. If you have time, inside the Memorial Church of Moses likely need more of your attention.

I used to visit Mount Nebo regularly, but it was about 40 years ago. I visited Mount Nebo again this September and found that the complex is well planned and a joy to walk round, see the church, mosaic, shrine and view of the Hoy Land. In the olden days there was a small road out of Madaba that took you to Mount Nebo where the excavation was still ongoing. Nowadays it is a busy road with huge souvenir shops, restaurants and houses nearly all the way from Madaba. Still an interesting place to visit and not to be missed, but 40 years ago it was more of an adventure. There are large tour groups that come here now and too crowded for me.

Hello dear and thank you for your question
Nebo is a lovely area and a rare view in the whole word
Mount Nebo is accessible also through local guided full day tours - there are plenty of them hosted on tripadvisors, and they are mostly good in comfy buses.
We also suggest you call the drivers numbers handed over by our fellows from the trip advisors community as having a local helps you also make non guided plans ;
Extra tips:
a journey to mount Nebo must also include other sightseings in the area so don't miss:
• swimming in the dead sea (even for non swimmers) and mudding your skin
• visiting the "maghtas" area (baptism site of JC)
• visiting maeen falls (among the hottest waters on teh whole planet)
Have a lovely journey

Is it possible to travel without a formal guide from Jerusalem to Mount Nebo ?
What is the best plan for doing that? Get a visa in advance? (We are going to Israel in September)
I have read that it might be best to get a one entry visa at Beit She’an / Sheikh Hussein.
Do you travel by taxi from the border to Mount Nebo?
Any suggestions?
Written 20 June 2017
I don't think the Jordanians will let an Israeli guide come over as they get along but don't really like each other. I have never been to Israel but I have heard that border crossings can take up to 3 hours each way, so plan for that. Once you are in Jordan it is really easy to drive to Mt Nebo. You can use google maps to route yourself in a rental car. And at Mt Nebo a guide is not necessary. Many if not all the exhibits are marked in English.
I would not take a taxi from the border. I would see about getting a rental car if possible. I wonder if you can drive a car over from Israel?

What is the dress code for this site?
Written 24 April 2017
No special attire required at Mount Nebo which is not so much a church as a museum but always advise tourists to dress conservatively in Jordan i.e. no bare shoulders or shorts. Jeans and tee shirts are fine. NB that Mount Nebo is very very cold due to the wind.

However, it is considered to be the place from where God showed Moses the promised land.
