Must visit place in Amman
Located in the end of Rainbow street. An open air bazar, working only Fridays during Summer season, until first Friday on September.
Handmade items, jewellry, colourful ceramics goods, local honey, jams and typical Jordanian food as zaatar, labane, maqdous, spices and antiquities, books, paintings and many more typical Jordanian art handmade beautiful things. At the end of bazar you can find an outdoor eating area.
The atmosphere of Souk JARA is great, vivid, artistique, festive. Enjoy just a stroll or choose an unique memorable gifts for yourself and friends.

In other cities, I can be called “Arts in the Park”
Artists sell their talents - amazing ones - a lot of variety.
Foods, spices, flower art made out of colored stones (fantastic!), paintings, olive wood carvings….
Such fun to go and check them out, the prices are VERY reasonable.
Weekends Fri/Sat in summer hours. Please check them out!!

We happened upon Souk Jara while wandering around looking for Rainbow street and what a find we found!
All kinds of craft vendors, many with truly unique products, lined the street next to tasty food vendors (homemade ice cream, watermelon shakes, etc) alongside groovy on-site art projects. The market had a very low-key, cool vibe and it was a perfect way to spend a few hours of the afternoon.
Note that Souk Jara is a seasonal fair, so make sure to check their Facebook page or email them before you set out looking for it, to see if it is actually happening. We were there on a Friday in September 2011 and it was happening only for 2 more weeks of the season. If you're in Amman during the summer, definitely check to see if you'll be able to catch it!

Has the market died?

Although I'd just arrived in Amman and was suffering from jet lag, the view from my hotel room tempted me down to the street. I saw the Souk Jara, an enormous flea market, which sells bits & bobs of everything, but specializes in second hand clothing - like an open-air Goodwill, which on Fridays sprawls over the vast area of a decommissioned bus terminal.
Well, there's nothing like shopping to make me feel at home. Most of the goods were poor quality but the real adventure is moving among the citizens of Amman as they go about their everyday lives. Much of what's for sale in Jordan is geared to foreigners. The Souk Jara, however, is the real deal.
After hours of wandering among the stalls, I found a lovely mustard/burgundy silk wraparound skirt for 1 dinar & a long black robe, an abaya, with rich red embroidery down the front & on the cuffs. An elderly shopper, with whom I'd had brief eye contact, nodded her approval of my choice; so I got the price down a little & paid 4 dinars. (1 dinar = approx. CAD$1.65)
The atmosphere was very relaxed and no one bothered me. I mention this because I overheard some other tourists who apparently just stood at the edge, being too nervous to plunge in. Don't let the noise and the crowds intimidate you!
Between the people watching and the shopping, my visit to Souk Jara was an excellent introduction to Jordan!

Found this outdoor market by accident. It's not the usual middle eastern souk - but more like a gentile, middle class, London craft market (Highgate or Dulwich?) selling hand made soaps, local honey, etc. It appears that Rainbow Street is on the tourist trail anyway - but many locals from Amman also come here to stroll and shop. Great place to get locally produced gifts to take home, and on a hot day a great respite from the hustle and bustle of the souks beside the King Hussein mosque, just a short walk away. The "Wild Jordan Café" is also close to one end of the market (see my review) - if you fancy a good coffee and some health conscious food (after too many large portions of artery clogging, hear-attack-on-a plate, kunafeh!)

One of the great things about Souq Jara is that it's more popular with locals than tourists, so the booths have more than just the usual tourist stuff. It's not all necessarily inexpensive, but there are many different types of work and artists. You can most likely buy all of your gifts to take back home in one visit here.

A great way to spend a few hours on Friday after brunch on Rainbow Street. Good variety of products but a little pricey. The food court and juices available at the end of the souk is lovely.

Is Souk Jara open on 13 March (Friday)? Some websites say it open from early March to Sept and some say from June. Thanks!

Are there any markets or souks open on a Saturday evening ?
Written 30 November 2019
Yes all the Souks are open 7 days as week and depending on the area, for example downtown Amman, they are open until 11pm and some areas of downtown stay up until 1pm. Sweifieh and Abdoun are also busy areas and are open beyond midnight.
