Hercules was here
Sep 2021
The Temple of Hercules must have been an impressive site back in the day. Mostly collapsed now but you can get an idea of the size of the structure by looking at the remaining columns. This is one of the most important sites at the Citadel

Top of the Citadel
Aug 2021
It is impossible to miss the temple, as it occupies on of the high points of the citadel. The remaining standing columns make for a great photo spot.

The ruins are cool and exiting, also the view is pretty spectacular; but the Museum is great! they have artifacts and information starting at Pre-historic times and all through history up to modern days.

Hire a guide at the gate for better explanations. Museum inside is worth a visit. Walk to the Amphitheater afterwards.

Roman hero and god
Jan 2020
The Temple of Hercules honoring the Roman hero and god is the most important Roman structure in the Amman Citadel. It dates to 161-166 AD. It’s thought the temple was not finished because they are no remains of additional columns. Nearby are the pieces of what was once a colossal stone statue of Hercules, estimated to be 39 ft (12 m) tall. Remaining are three fingers and an elbow.

Even on a cold windy day this ruin above Amman is redolent of earlier times and is well signposted and beside an intriguing museum

Nice part of the Citadel
Mar 2020
Very nice ruins of the Temple, it sure reminds one of the many ruins in Greece and Italy and clearly see their influence. From here you will enjoy amazing views of the City and the Roman Amphitheater down below as well as the majestic Jordan flag in the opposite side of the Citadel.

Included in the Jordan Pass.

Part of the Citadel
Mar 2020
The Temple of Hercules is justly one of the many ruins to see when you do a walking tour of the old Citadel on one of Amman’s highest hills. If you choose to walk up to the Citadel then the hill climbing will test your fitness, but it is worth the climb. Alternatively you can get a very cheap taxi ride up from the old part of Amman. The Temple is worth seeing but so is the rest of the amazing fortress. Don’t forget to check out the museum when you are there. They have a wonderful collection of antiquities from Amman and other parts of Jordan.
