Mukawir is located on a hilltop that provides amazing 360 views of the whole area and the Dead Sea. No wonder that King Herod chose this place to build his fortress. Its a steep walk to get there so wear very comfortable walking shoes and...More

You feel like you left your world and entered a new one. The views are breathtaking and it's a nice spot to watch a sunset. The ride to reach there from Amman is a bit long, but definitely worth it .

When you arrive in the parking lot and look towards the top it appears as if it will be a much longer walk than it actually is. It took us about 15 minutes. There is an elevation difference and it can be very hot as...More

What a spectacular place to visit! It is a bit of a hike from the visitor center, but worth every step. The view from the top is phenomenal. The day I went, I was the only person there, so very serene. It is a humbling...More

The historic hilltop site of Machaerus lies south west of Madaba near the village of Mukawir. It is about 35 Km from Madaba and easily reached by car or taxi, if one is not on an escorted tour. Under Herod Antipas, the son of Herod...More

I really wanted to visit Mukawir as this site seemed to have one of the stronger historical claims of having a link to a major Biblical event. This is purported to be the site where John the Baptist was beheaded by King Herod. There's very...More
